Plant Registrar before they are actually used. There are thousands of names already in use and a name to be registered must not have been used before and must meet the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants-1969.Requests to register names must be submitted with A.R.S. BODEGA CRYSTAL PINK : 'Cilpinense' x R. mucronulatum 'Cornell Pink'. Raised (1968) and introduced (1975) by Carl G. Heller, M.D., Bodega Rhododendron Nursery, Poulsbo, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, red purple group 62B (R. H. S. Colour Chart) with red purple group 66C spots. Reverse red purple group 63B. Calyx 5 mm. greyed red group 180D. Truss 8 cm. across x 5 cm. high, ball-shaped, of 3 - 7 flowers. Leaves 6 cm. x 2½ cm., elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, yellow green group 146C, under surface scaly, semi-deciduous. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 1 m. tall x 50 cm. wide in 8 years. Blooms in March. Hardy to at least 5° F.
CARL PHETTEPLACE : 'Naomi Pink Beauty' x R. fortunei (pink form). Raised and introduced (1974) by Mr. & Mrs. Robert G. Guitteau, Eugene, Or. Cross by Carl H. Phetteplace, M.D., 1962. Buds strong purplish red 7.5 RP 5/12 (Nickerson). Flowers of heavy substance, widely funnel shaped, 10 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 6-7 evenly rounded lobes, fragrant, deep purplish pink, 5 RP 6/10, with variable chocolate spotting, inconspicuous in some flowers and in others forming almost a small blotch. Reverse strong purplish pink 7.5 RP 7/10. Calyx 1 cm., green. Truss 15 cm. x 15 cm., ball-shaped, with 13 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 15 cm. x 7 cm., elliptic, acute, rounded, glabrous, glossy, grayish olive green 7.5 GY 3/2, retained 2 years. Plant upright, branching moderately, 8' x 8' in 12 years. Blooms first 2 weeks of May. Hardy to at least -10° F.
ELSIE LEE : An evergreen azalea. 'Desiree' x 'Rosebud'. Raised (1960) and introduced (1970) by A. M. Shammarello, South Euclid, Oh. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2¼-2½" across x 11/a" long, semi-double with 10 lobes in three whorls, light reddish purple 10 P 6/9 (Nickerson). Calyx 3/8" strong yellowish green 5 GY 6/8. Inflorescence 2 to 3 flowered. Floriferous. Leaves 1½" x 7/8", broadly elliptic, acute, rounded, glossy, moderate yellow green 7.5 GY 5/7, retained 2 years. Mature leaves yellowish brown. Plant upright, broad, semi dwarf, branching well with stiff branches, 3' x 3' in 10-15 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to -15 to -20° F.
HELEN CURTIS : An evergreen azalea. 'Desiree' x 'Rosebud'. Raised (1960) and introduced (1967) by A. M. Shammarello, South Euclid, Ohio. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2¼-2½" across x 1¼" long, with 10 frilled lobes in 3 rows (semi-double flower), white with no markings. No calyx. Inflorescence 2 to 3 flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 1½" x 7/8" broadly elliptic, acute, rounded, glossy, under surface hairy, retained 2 years. Mature leaves yellowish brown. New growth strong yellow green 2.5 GY 6/8 (Nickerson). Plant upright, rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well with some decumbent branches, 2' tall x 3' wide in 10-15 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to -15 to -20° F.
ISABEL PIERCE : 'Anna' x 'Lem's Goal'. Raised and introduced (1967) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA. Named and described by Lawrence J. Pierce. Buds red group 53 B (R. H. S. Colour Chart). Flowers openly funnel shaped, 9 cm. across x 6 cm. long, with 5-7 wavy to frilled lobes and an occasional small petaloid stamen, red purple group 58C fading to red group 56A (edges of lobes deeper pink), with prominent blotch brown group 200B in inner throat below dorsal 3 lobes becoming spots red group 53B toward lobes, with lesser blotch and spotting of same colors in lower throat, with internal and external narrow stripes red group 53D from base to lobe edges. Stamens short. Calyx minute, pink. Truss 15 cm. x 15 cm., ball-shaped, with 9-10 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 13 cm. x 4 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute, rounded, glabrous, dark green, retained 3 years. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 3½' tall x 4' wide in 8 years. Blooms in early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 15° F.
JEFF HILL : An evergreen azalea. Marubaosaka Zuki x unknown. Cross (1961) by Dr. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised and introduced (1975) by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, Mass. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, deep pink 2.5 R 6/11 (Nickerson) to deep yellowish pink 5 R 6/11, with inconspicuous spotting moderate red 2.5 R 4/10 on 3 lobes. Calyx .8 cm., light green, white hairy. Inflorescence 1-2 flowered. Floriferous. Leaves 1"x 3/8", mostly narrowly elliptic, others narrowly oblong, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, very glossy, grayish olive green 5 GY 3/2, lightly hairy, under surface slightly hairy. Leaves retained 1+ years. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 17" tall x 26" wide in 13 years. Blooms in late June. Hardy to -5° F.
JOSEPH HILL : An evergreen azalea. R. nakaharai x "W. Leith". Cross (1961) by Dr. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, Mass. Pictured in American Horticulturist 52:1, 1973, p. 34 (#4). Flowers funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, deep pink 2.5 R 6/11 (Nickerson), with inconspicuous blotch on upper 3 lobes moderate red 2.5 R 4/10. Calyx 7 mm., light green, hairy. Inflorescence 3-flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 3 cm. x 1 cm., mostly narrowly elliptic to elliptic, others narrowly obovate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, hairy, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4, under surface scattered hairy. Leaves retained 1 year, well through winter when smoky bronze green. Plant dwarf, branching well, creeping and spreading, 12" tall x 42" wide in 13 years. Blooms last 2 weeks of June. Hardy to -5° F.
KEVIN : R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Jade'. Raised (before 1955) and named by Robert M. Bovee. Described and introduced (1973-74) by Sorenson and Watson, The Bovees Nursery, Portland, Or. Buds strong purplish red 10 RP 5/12 (Nickerson). Flowers of heavy substance widely funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across x 1¼" long, with 5 frilled lobes, at first strong pink 10 RP 7/8, gradually fading to light yellowish pink 7.5 R 9/3, then 2.5 YR 9/3, with faint red spots at first, edging and reverse always a darker version of flower color at different stages. Calyx saucer-shaped, 2 lobes ½", 3 lobes ¼", same color as corolla at different ages. Truss 5" across x 3½, tall, ball shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 5" x 2", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, slightly bullate, medium green, with golden brown indumentum, retained 3 years. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 4' tall x 5' wide in approximately 20 years. Blooms in early through mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
KRISTIN : R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Bowbells'. Raised (before 1955) by Robert M. Bovee. Names and introduced (1973-74) by Sorenson and Watson, The Bovees Nursery, Portland, Or. Originally listed by parentage, #15. Buds strong purplish red 7.5 RP 4/11 (Nickerson). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, pale purplish pink 7.5 RP 9/2 with faint red spotting, reverse with strong purplish red 7.5 RP 5/12 striping. Calyx 1/32", red. Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, with 13-14 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 2½-3" x 1½-2", broadly elliptic, obtuse with apiculus, rounded, glabrous, dark green, with slight light brownish green indumentum, retained 3 years. New growth reddish light gray. Plant rounded semi dwarf, branching well, 32" tall x 42" wide in approximately 20 years. Blooms in early through mid-May. Hardy to at least 0° F.
LEM'S CAMEO S.P.A.: 'Dido' x 'Anna'. Raised (1956) and introduced (1962) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle Wa. Named by Anna Lem and described by Lawrence J. Pierce. Pictured: Quarterly Bulletin, A.R.S., 25:4, 1971 and 29:1, 1975. Buds red group 55A (R.H.S. Colour Chart). Flowers of heavy substance, widely funnel campanulate, 9 cm. across x 5½ cm. long, with 6-7 wavy lobes, throat orange group 27A shading to red group 55B at outer lobe edges, fading to orange group 27C with some pink shading, dorsal blotch red group 46B in throat and slightly spotted at outer edge of throat, reverse shaded red group 55A. Calyx leafy, uneven, to 2 cm. on dorsal side, cream with reddish stripes and edging. Truss 20 cm. across x 17 cm. high, dome shaped, of 17-20 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 13 cm. x 5½ cm., elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, retained 3 years. New growth mahogany. Plant upright, branching well, 6' tall x 4½' wide in 17 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
MARDI GRAS: R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Vanessa 'A''. Raised (1950) by Robert M. Bovee. Named and introduced (1972-73) by Sorenson and Watson, The Bovees Nursery, Portland, Ore. Originally listed by parentage, #3. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel shaped, 2½" across x 1¼" long, with 5 frilled lobes, pale purplish pink 7.5 RP 9/2 (Nickerson), fading irregularly within corolla to white, edging and reverse strong purplish pink 7.5 RP 7/10 to strong purplish red 7.5 RP 5/12. Calyx 1/16", yellow. Truss 5" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, of 11-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 5½-6" x 2", oblanceolate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, with reddish brown indumentum, retained 3-4 years. Plant broad, rounded, semi dwarf, branching well, 3' tall x 4' wide in 24 years. Blooms early through mid-May. Hardy to at least 0° F.
MICHAEL HILL : An evergreen azalea. "Chinyeyi" (Rare Treasure) (a Satsuki) x R. nakaharai. Cross (1961) by Dr. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, Mass. Flowers funnel shaped, 6 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 frilled lobes, strong pink 2.5 R 7/8 (Nickerson), with blotch and spotting on dorsal 3 lobes deep purplish red 7.5 RP 3/9. Calyx ½ cm., silvery green. Inflorescence 1-2 flowered. Floriferous. Leaves 3.5 cm. x 1.2 cm., glabrous, glossy, lightly hairy, moderate green 7.5 GY 4/4, retained 1 year (well through winter). Plant broad, dwarf, branching well, 17" tall x 45" wide in 13 years. Blooms in late June - early July. Hardy to -5° F.
RED OLYMPIA: 'Anna' x 'Fusilier'. Raised (before 1960) and introduced (before 1970) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA. Described by Lawrence J. Pierce. Buds red group 53B (R. H. S. Colour Chart). Flowers cup-shaped with 5 widely spread wavy lobes, 11 cm. across x 7 cm. long, red group 51A, heavily spotted black on dorsal 3 lobes and in throat, lighter spotting on lower lobes, reverse red group 53B with darker red lines down center of each lobe to corolla base. Calyx 2-5 mm., red. Truss 20 cm. across x 18 cm. high, dome-shaped, of 13-16 flowers. Leaves 18 cm. x 5 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, dark green, retained 3 years. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 6' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 10°F.
ROMA SUN : 'Loderi King George' x "Ostbo Y-3" (sister seedling of 'King of Shrubs'). Raised (1950 or '51) by Robert M. Bovee. Named and introduced (1974-5) by Sorenson and Watson, The Bovees Nursery, Portland, Or. Buds deep pink 2.5 R 6/11 (Nickerson). Flowers of heavy substance, open-funnel-campanulate, 4½" across x 3" long, with 7-8 wavy to frilled lobes, fragrant, moderate yellowish pink 10 R 8/6 becoming light yellowish green, lobes edged deep pink 2.5 R 6/11 which fades, reverse deep pink 2.5 R 6/11, becoming strong yellowish pink 5 R 7/9, then light yellow. Calyx 3/16", dark red. Truss 9" across x 5" high, full, erect but flat on top, with 10 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 8¼" x 3", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, slightly auriculate, somewhat bullate, medium green, retained 2 years. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, 6' x 6' in 24 years. Blooms in May. Probably hardy to 0° F.
SHAM'S CANDY : 'Pinnacle' x 'Pink Cameo'. Raised (1960) and introduced (1968) by A. M. Shammarello, South Euclid, Ohio. Synonym: 'Candy'. Buds and corolla reverse deep purplish pink 7.5 RP 6/12 (Nickerson). Flowers openly funnel shaped, 2¾" across x 3" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, strong purplish pink 7.5 RP 7/10 with prominent dark yellowish green 10 Y 6/7 blotch on upper lobe. Calyx ¼", strong yellowish green 7.5 GY 6/8. Truss 5½" across x 4½" high, conical with 12 flowers. Leaves 4½" x 1¾", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4, retained 2 years. New growth yellowish green. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 3½' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to -20° F.
SHAM'S RUBY : 'Kettledrum' x 'America'. Raised (1943) and introduced (1961) by A. M. Shammarello, South Euclid, Ohio. Synonym: 'Ruby'. Flowers openly funnel shaped, 2¼" across x 2½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, strong purplish red 10 RP 41/2 (Nickerson) with slight blotch deep purplish red 7.5 RP 4/11. Calyx negligible. Truss 5½" across x 4" tall, ball-shaped, with 16 flowers. Leaves 4½" x 2¼", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4, retained 2 years. Plant upright, broad, semi-dwarf, 3' tall x 2½' wide in 10 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to -20° F.
SPARKLE : An evergreen azalea. Red R. kaempferi seedling x 'Gable's Flame'. Raised (1951) and introduced (1960) by A. M. Shammarello, South Euclid, Ohio. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, strong red 2.5 R 5/12 (Nickerson). Calyx 3/16" brilliant yellow green 7.5 GY 8/7. Inflorescence 2 to 3 flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 1¾" x 1", elliptic, obtuse, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green 2.5 GY 4/3, retained 2 years. New growth and mature leaves reddish. Plant upright, broad, semi-dwarf, 2½' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to -15° F.
SUSANNAH HILL : An evergreen azalea. "W. Leith' x R. nakaharai . Cross (1961) by Dr. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, Mass. Pictured in American Horticulturist 52:1,1973, p. 34 (#1). Flowers funnel-shaped, 4 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes (some doubling), strong red 2.5 R 5/12 (Nickerson) with inconspicuous moderate red 2.5 R 4/10 spotting on 1 lobe. Calyx 3 mm., light green. Inflorescence 1-2 flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 2.5 cm. x 1 cm., elliptic to broadly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, lightly hairy, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4, under surface hairy. Leaves retained 1+ years. Plant prostrate when young, later broad, dwarf, branching well with some creeping branches, 15" tall x 52" wide in 13 years. Blooms in June. Hardy to -5°F.
VIRGINIA ANDERSON : R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Bowbells'. Raised (before 1955) and named by Robert M. Bovee. Described and introduced (1972-3) by Sorenson and Watson, The Bovees Nursery, Portland, Or. Buds strong purplish red 7.5 RP 4/11 (Nickerson). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1¼" long, with 5 wavy lobes, pale purplish pink 7.5 RP 9/2 fading irregularly within corolla to white, reverse with strong purplish red 7.5 RP 5/12 striping. Floriferous. Leaves 3 5/8" x 1 5/8", elliptic, acute, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, dark green, with slight brownish indumentum (under surface light green), retained 2-3 years. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 42" tall x 52" wide in approximately 20 years. Blooms mid through late May. Hardy to at least 0° F.
WARLOCK : 'Romany Chal' x 'Purple Splendour'. Raised (1958) by C. W. Bledsoe, M.D., and introduced (1973) by David L. Bledsoe, Snohomish, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, very dark reddish purple with heavily embossed dorsal black blotch and spotting. Calyx 2-5 mm., lavender. Truss 17 cm. across x 10 cm. high, flat, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 14 cm. x 6 cm., mostly elliptic, others oblong, acute, rounded, glabrous, dark green, retained 3 years. Leaf petioles dark red. New growth maroon. Plant broad, branching well with decumbent branches, 8' tall x 10' wide in 15 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least 0° F.
NOTE: 'Janet Blair', a hybrid introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, has been distributed with the name 'John Wister'. This latter name will be considered a synonym.
