The following clones appeared in the list of newly registered clones in The Rhododendron and Camellia Year Book, 1967, The Royal Horticultural Society; but have not been described in the A.R.S. Quarterly Bulletin:
EIKO-SAN : An evergreen azalea. An interspecies hybrid of Gumpo selection derived from R. indicum , R. kaempferi , and R. eriocarpum . Introduced into the U.S.A. without name from Dr. T. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan, by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA. Possibly exists in Japan under a different name. (There are several similar clones with Japanese names, as Benibanyo.) Resembles the southern form of 'Balsaminaeflora'. Flowers openly funnel-shaped (double), 5 cm. across x 31/2 cm. long, 30-35 lobes (5-7 whorls of 5), center lobes folded, deep pink 2.5 R 6/11 (Nickerson) with veins of strong red. Calyx 2-3 mm., green hairy. Inflorescence single-flowered. Free-flowering; long-lasting. Leaves 3½ cm. x 1 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, retained 1 year, upper surface glabrous, dull green, hairy, under surface glossy, hairy on veins. Leaves reddish in winter. New growth greenish tan, hairy. Plant a compact mound, 15"" tall x 30" wide in 15 years. Blooms first half of June. Hardy to 5° F.
MATSUYO : An evergreen azalea. An interspecies hybrid of Gumpo selection derived from R. indicum , R. kaempferi , and R. eriocarpum . Introduced into the U.S.A. without name from Dr. T. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan, by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA. Possibly exists in Japan under a different name. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 8 cm. across x 5.5 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded to wavy lobes. Flowers white, each with thread-like to wide streaks, or sectors, or dots in a line of red group 39B (R. H. S. Colour Chart) that extend from throat to lobe edge. Some flowers all 39B. Calyx 5 mm., green, hairy. Inflorescence 1-2-flowered. Leaves 4 cm. x 1.3 cm., elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, lightly hairy, dark green, retained 1 year. Under surface light green, glossy, with a few hairs. Plant low, medium dense, compact 16'" tall x 30" wide in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Plant hardy to -5°F; buds to 5-10° F.
YUKA : An evergreen azalea. An interspecies hybrid of Gumpo selection derived from R. indicum , R. kaempferi , and R. eriocarpum . Introduced into the U.S.A. without name from Dr. T. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan, by Mary Louisa B. Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA. Possibly exists in Japan under a different name. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3½'' across x 3" long, with 5-6 wavy to slightly frilled lobes, mostly white, occasionally flushed red group 52D (R. H. S. Colour Chart), blotched or streaked 53B, or all red, with faint chartreuse blotch. Calyx 7 mm., light green, white hairy. Inflorescence 1-2flowered. Leaves 3.5 cm. x 1.8 cm., elliptic, acute, cuneate, deep green, glossy, slightly white or reddish hairy, retained 1 year. Under surface hairy on margins and veins. Plant vigorous, medium low, mounding, and spreading, 18" tall x 30" wide in 10 years. Blooms in late June. Hardy to 0° F.
