More On Azaleodendrons
Walter Schmalscheidt, West Germany
There are many azaleodendrons, both new as well as old cultivars, which were not mentioned in the "Quarterly Bulletin No. 4, 1977", page 229-232. In order to render the survey as complete as possible for those particularly interested in azaleodendrons, an additional list follows.
Perhaps I should say that I have been working for the past 17 years with rhododendrons and azaleas consisting of almost 1700 different cultivars and species situated in Bad Zwischenahn near the town of Oldenburg.
This collection was started in 1962 in Aurich/Ostfriesland (a part of the State Niedersachsen). The collection was moved in 1975 to the small town Bad Zwischenahn in the Country "Amerland". This area is a center of more than 400 nurseries, which grow azaleas, rhododendrons, conifers and so-called better shrubs and trees such as Hamamelis, Magnolias, Japanese maples, Cornus and so on, in an area of 1800 ha (4500 acres). The garden measures three hectares (7.5 acres) and contains about 5000 bushes of rhododendrons and azaleas and, in addition, many conifers. The owner of this garden is the Landwirtshaftskammer Weser-Ems, or in your Language Chamber for Agriculture Weser-Ems, for which I am working. It is a research and experimental garden particularly to test new and old hybrids under German conditions.
The following azaleodendrons are listed in the same succession of groups as in Dr. Kehr's record.

Azaleodendrons with parentage unknown
'Joy's Delight', probably a hybrid of J. H. Mangles
'Gemmiferum', parents and origin unknown, J. Waterer, before 1861
Rehder suggests it might be a hybrid between the azalea
R. prinophyllum
(
R. roseum)
and
R. catawbiense
.
But in my opinion the assumption of Rehder is very probably incorrect because there is no visible influence of
R. catawbiense
or
R. prinophyllum
.
