QBARS - v35n1 Southeast Chapters Do It Again
SOUTHEAST CHAPTERS DO IT AGAIN
Ed Egan, Portland, OR
Under the able leadership of Southeastern Chapter President, Dr. Furman Cantrell, six chapters, Azalea, Birmingham, Middle Atlantic, Piedmont, Southeastern and William Bartram, concluded a regional 2 day meeting on October 26, 1980. Attendance at this third Annual Regional Meeting was about 120 with most members attending from the Southeast Area, but also including some from the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast.
The Mini-Convention started off on Friday evening with a fine address by Dr. Henry Skinner on R. chapmanii / minus / carolinianum followed by Lewis Shorn on R. catawbiense . Saturday morning's session began with extremely interesting talks by Bob McCartney on R. roseum / nudiflorum ; followed by National President Fred Galle on R. calendulaceum / bakeri ; George Beasly on R. speciosum / canescens and concluding with a talk on insect disease problems by Dr. C. Gorsuch. All four talks were illustrated with very fine slides.
After a delicious banquet dinner, the evening speaker was Dr. Don Kellam who held his audience spellbound with his well illustrated talk, "In Hooker's Footsteps". Sunday morning combined the National Board Meeting and a Breeder's Round Table.
All in all, the Regional Meeting was on a par with the best of National Conventions and flowed so smoothly one would have thought that such meetings were held as frequently as chapter meetings.
