Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5-6 slightly wavy lobes, Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose), throat Yellow Group 4D, reverse 55A. Calyx minute, green. Truss 8" across x 5½" tall, flat, with 14-17 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4½" x 1⅞", narrower than elliptic, apiculate, rounded, slightly convex, glabrous, faintly glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Winter bud scales edged dull red; some with dull red flush at base. Plant rounded, branching well, 6½' tall x 9' wide in 30 years. Blooms late May. Hardy to at least -18°F.
BERMUDA. 'Anna H. Hall' x 'Nestucca'. Cross (1961), raised, and introduced (1975) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Red Purple Group 63B (Spiraea Red). Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2" across x 1¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 62B — Phlox Pink), with dorsal Yellow Green Group 153B spotting. Calyx minute, green. Truss 5½" x 4¼", dome-shaped, with 13-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1⅜", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, coriaceous, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147B, under surface glabrescent (early with thin, brownish indumentum, visible with lens). Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 4½' tall x 6' wide in 20 years. Blooms late May, early June. Hardy to at least-20°F.
CORAL SKIES: 'Lem's Cameo' x [('Fabia' x R. bureavii ) x 'Crest'] (probable pedigree for pollen parent; exact combination unknown). Cross (1977), raised and introduced (1981) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Distributed as C.F.B.C. No. 33. Buds Red Group 50A (Claret Rose). Flowers of good substance, long lasting, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2¼" long, with 5-6 wavy to frilled lobes, Red Group 50C-D (Claret Rose to Empire Rose) with 5-6 radial stripes within each lobe sector, 50B, from throat to lobe edge, reverse 50B-D with similar striping. Calyx ½-1½", 50B, of leafy lobes held well away from base of corolla. Flower colors do not fade. Truss 7" across x 5" high, flat, with 7 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3¼-4" x 1¼-1¾", oblanceolate, apiculate (knob short), narrowly cuneate, concave, grossly glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A, with light, very light tan indumentum hardly visible without lens. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 16" x 16" in 4 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
FIFTY-FINE: 'Great Lakes' x 'Good Hope'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced (1981) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow) with sparse, dorsal, Yellow Green Group 145B spotting. Calyx minute, green. Truss 5¼" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4⅜" x 2⅛", elliptic, obtuse, rounded, convex, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant broad, branching well, 3' tall x 4½' wide in 13 years. Blooms in late May. FLAMENCO: 'Fanfare' x 'Gertrud Schäle'. Cross (1956), raised, and introduced (1968) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, near Red Group 52A (Crimson), with linear spotting, Red Group 45D (Blood Red), in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx minute, green. Truss 5½" across x 3" high, flat, with 6-9 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 2½-3⅛" x 1 -1⅜", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat, glabrous, dull. Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant broad, dwarf, branching well, very dense, 18" tall x 28" wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15°F.

GREENSPRITE: Golden Jubilee (an unregistered R.A. Pearce hybrid of unknown pedigree) x 'Crest'. Cross (1971), raised, and introduced by Elsie Watson, Kirkland, WA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 3¼" x 3¼", with 8 wavy to frilled lobes, with distinct Gardenia fragrance, Green White Group 157D with ½" x ¾" dorsal blotch, faint Yellow Green Group 146D, deep in throat, with peripheral spotting 146D above blotch. No stamens. Calyx ⅛", Yellow Green Group 146B. Truss 5" across x 4" tall, ball-shaped, with 10 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 5¾"x 2¼", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, flat, margin undulate, glabrous, glossy. Yellow Green Group 147A. New growth may tend to hide flowers somewhat. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least 9°F.
HONG KONG: R. catawbiense var. album x 'Crest'. Cross (1956), raised, and introduced (1974) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2⅛" across x 2⅛" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow), with ⅝" x ¼", Green Yellow Group 1B dorsal blotch deep in throat. Calyx minute, green, edged yellow. Truss 7½" across x 5" high, flat, with 13 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4⅜" x 2½", elliptic to broadly elliptic, apiculate, rounded, flat, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant conical, branching well 9' tall x 11' wide in 25 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
JAVA: 'Mars' x ('Mars' x R. catawbiense Rubrum). Cross (1958), raised, and introduced (1975) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, near Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red), throat Red Group 56B, nectaries 53A. Calyx minute, light red. Truss 6" across x 4½" high, dome-shaped, with 16-17 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 5" x 2⅛", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, flat, glabrous, dull. Yellow Green Group 147A. Winter buds with narrow awns. Plant broad, branching moderately, 5' tall x 5½' wide in 23 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
KATRINA: 'Anna' x 'Purple Splendour'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Elsie Watson, Kirkland, WA. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2½" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes. Red Purple Group 64B (Magenta Rose), with prominent black blotch and black spotting (above blotch), 1½" x 1¼", in lower dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ⅛", Green Group 139B. Truss 5½" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, with 10 flowers Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 7" x 2", narrower than narrowly elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, concave, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 139A. Plant upright, open, branching moderately with stiff branches, 5' tall x 3' wide in 1 3 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 9°F.
NIKKO: ( R. catawbiense var. album x 'Crest') x {'Ivory Tower' x [ R. catawbiense var. album x ( R. wardii x R. decorum )]}. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Orange Red Group 35C (Brick Red). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3⅛" across x 1⅜" long, with 6 (or 5) evenly rounded lobes, Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow) shading to 4B in throat. Calyx 3/16", green edged reddish. Truss 6" across x 4½" high, dome-shaped, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 1-2 years, 4¾" x 1⅛", narrower than elliptic, apiculate, rounded, flat, glabrous, semi-glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Winter bud scales reddish with vertical stripes. Plant rounded, branching well, 5½' tall x 6' wide in 13 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -15°F.
PANAMA: 'Fanfare' x { R. catawbiense var. album x [( R. dichroanthum x R. griersonianum ) x ( R. discolor x 'Corona')]}. Cross (1962), raised, and introduced (1976) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1⅜" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red) with 53A spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ⅜", blotched Red Purple Group 62D. Truss 5½" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 10-13 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1⅞", elliptic, acute, rounded, slightly convex, margin somewhat wavy, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A, petioles conspicuously dark red. Plant broad, branching moderately with arching branches, 5½' tall x 9' wide in 19 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to -15°F.
PINEAPPLE DELIGHT: 'Hotei' x Lester Brandt hybrid of unknown parents (called Tropicana). Cross (1971) by E.C. Brockenbrough, M.D. Raised and introduced by Greg Kesterson, Everett, WA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, with 7 wavy to frilled lobes. Yellow Orange Group 18A (Amber Yellow) shading to 18C at lobe edges and Red Group 38A between lobes, throat Yellow Group 13A, with slight, dorsal, Greyed Yellow Group 162B spotting, reverse Yellow Orange Group 16C. Calyx 1½", Yellow Orange Group 18C, Yellow Group 9A at base, and spotted. Truss 6" across x 5½" tall, ball-shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½" x 2½", elliptic, apiculate, almost cuneate, convex, margins undulate, dull, somewhat bullate. Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, branching well, 2½' x 2½' in 10 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
RIO: Newburyport Beauty (Syn.: Fowle #18) x Newburyport Belle (Syn.: Fowle #19). These unregistered parents are probably open pollinated progeny from Dexter hybrids grown at the H.W. Fowle Nursery at Newburyport, MA, and then grown and named at Swarthmore College by Dr. John C. Wister. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1⅝" long, with 5-6 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 65D, with faint dorsal blotch, 1⅛" x ¾", and a few spots Yellow Group 8D. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Truss 6½" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, with 16 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5¼" x 2⅛", elliptic to narrowly elliptic; apiculate, rounded, concave, glabrous, semi-glossy. Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant rounded, branching well, 3½' tall x 5½' wide in 13 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
SIAM: R. catawbiense var. album x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1952), raised, and introduced (1975) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Red Purple Group 68A (Roseine Purple). Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2" across x 1½" wide, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 62D, aging to white, with sparse, Yellow Green Group 150B spotting. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6½" across x 4½" high, dome-shaped, with 19-20 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4" x 1⅝", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, convex, glabrous, glossy. Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with medium amount, orange brown indumentum. New growth with tan tomentum. Plant broad, semi-dwarf, branching well, 4' tall x 5' wide in 10 years. Blooms late May, early June. Hardy to at least -20°F.
SIERRA DEL ORO: 'Crest' x R. lacteum. Cross (1967), raised, and introduced (1975) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Distributed as No. C.L. 13. Flowers openly campanulate, 3½" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy, reflexed lobes. Yellow Group 3D, with Greyed Red Group 179A, ½" flare deep within dorsal throat. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" across x 4½" high, ball-shaped to flat, with 15 flowers. Leaves held 1½ years, 3-6" x 2-3", broadly elliptic to elliptic, obtuse with apiculus, rounded (slightly auriculate), somewhat concave along mid-vein, convex at blade edges, coriaceous, glabrous, somewhat glossy. Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with juvenile, almost colorless, scattered hairs visible only with lens. Plant broad, rounded, branching well with arching branches, 4' tall x 5' wide in 14 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least 0°F. Trusses last to 4 weeks; color on plant to 6 weeks.
SUDAN: ( R. catawbiense Rubrum x 'Elizabeth) x 'Fanfare'. Cross (1958), raised, and introduced (1976) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers of good substance openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1⅝" long, with 5 wavy lobes, somewhat near Red Group 45C with 1" x ½", dorsal, Yellow Group 8D blotch and a few dorsal, red spots. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Truss 4½" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, slightly convex with somewhat wavy margin, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant broad, semi-dwarf, branching moderately with decumbent branches, 3½' tall x 5' wide in 23 years. Blooms in May. Hardy to at least -12°F.

SUNUP-SUNDOWN ( R. yakushimanum x 'Fabia') x [('Fabia' x R. bureavii ) x 'Crest']. Cross (1975), raised, and introduced (1979) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Synonym: Sunrise-Sunset. Buds Red Group 45D (Blood Red). Flowers openly campanulate, 3" across x 2" long with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 48C-D (Empire Rose) fading to 37D (Shell Pink), heavily spotted Orange Red Group 35B (Brick Red) on 3 dorsal lobes. Calyx 3" long, colored as corolla. Truss 6" across x 4" high, ball- to dome-shaped, with 8-10 flowers. Very free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 3-4" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, to elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, convex, of good substance, glabrous, very glossy. Yellow Green Group 147A, with medium, Greyed Yellow Group 161 A, felt-like indumentum. Plant broad, branching well, low growing, compact, 14" tall x 20" wide in 5 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
TINICUM: An Everitt Dexter F2 (open pollinated). Seed collected at the Everitt Estate, Huntington, NY, (1945) by George Gillies, who grew young seedlings. Raised (after 1951) by the Arthur H. Scott Horticultural Foundation, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA, and Dr. John C. Wister, who named the plant. Introduced (c. 1965) and registered by the Scott Foundation. Described by Gertrude S. Wister. Should be included in Everitt F2 Dexter Seedlings (p. 21), rather than among Swarthmore F2 Dexter Seedlings (p. 22) in Hybrids and Hybridizers, Rhododendrons and Azaleas for Eastern North America, Edited by Livingston and West, 1978. Synonym: Sw 12492 - 70R1. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 4¾" across x 2" long, with 7 wavy lobes, quite fragrant, pale pink 2.5R 9/3 (Nickerson) becoming brilliant yellow green 2.5GY 9/8 in throat. (Color effect of plant in bloom is moderate yellowish pink 7.5R 8/6.) Calyx ⅛", light yellow green. Truss 6" x 6", ball-shaped, with 9 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4½-5¼" x 2-2½", elliptic to narrowly obovate, apiculate (knob short), rounded, flat, glabrous, moderate olive green 2.5GY 4/3. Plant rounded, branching well, about 8' x 8' in 36 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
TRINIDAD: 'Calcutta' x Tahiti'. Cross (1960), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Pictured in American Horticulturist , 52:4 (Winter), 1973, p. 17 (top picture; labeled “unnamed"). Buds Red Purple Group 63B. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 62D with ⅜", Red Purple Group 66C edging, sparse dorsal. Greyed Yellow Group 162B spotting, reverse Red Purple Group 64C. Calyx variable in length, dorsal lobes 1¼''-1¾", Yellow Group 4D, striped Red Purple Group 63D. Truss 6½" across x 5¾" high, ball-shaped, with 14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 5¼" x 2⅛", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, flat to convex, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with inconspicuous, golden brown, scattered hairs to patchy indumentum. VICTORIA ELIZABETH: Knap Hill hybrid azalea. Parentage unknown. Cross (about 1965) by Peter Girard, Sr. Raised and registered by Robert K. Peters, Bendersville, PA. Introduced by Ray Carter, Aspers, PA. Buds strong reddish orange 7.5R 6/12 (Nickerson). Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2½" x 2½", with 5 wavy lobes, fragrant, pale orange yellow 7.5YR 9/4, with strong reddish orange 10R 6/1 2 wash on 2 lobes adjacent to dorsal lobes and slightly where lower 2 lobes join, with moderate orange yellow 10YR 8/10, 1¼" x ¾", dorsal blotch, reverse moderate orange yellow 7.5YR 8/8. Calyx 3/1 6", strong yellow green. Truss 5" across x 2½" high, lax, with 5 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3-4" x 1-1½'', narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, convex, hairy, ciliate, strong yellow green 5GY 6/8. Plant rounded, branching well with arching branches, 6' x 6' in about 17 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25° F.
WALT ELLIOTT: 'Lemon Custard' x 'Crest'. Cross (1969) by Walter Elliott, Shelton, WA. Raised and introduced by Fred Peste, Shelton, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 5" across x 3¾" long, with 6 wavy lobes, fragrant. Yellow Group 11B (Naples Yellow), throat Greyed Yellow Group 160A, 1" edging Red Group 49C (Venetian Pink), reverse Yellow Group 7A. Calyx ¼", Red Purple Group 59C. Truss 9" across x 6" high, lax with 7-10 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 7" x 2¼", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147B. Plant upright, open, branching well with willowy branches, 6' tall x 7' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
WESTBURY: A Dexter hybrid. Presumably a hybrid of Fortunei sub-series. Cross (before 1943) by Charles 0. Dexter, Shawme Farm (now Heritage Plantation), Sandwich, MA. Raised by Howard Phipps, Old Westbury, L. I. NY. Named by Paul Vossberg. Introduced (1958) by Westbury Rose Co. Registered by John J. Tyler Arboretum, Lima, PA. Described by Gertrude S. Wister. YELLOW CLOUD: Open pollinated (before 1970) Knap Hill azalea. Seed collected, raised, and introduced (1980) by Donald W. Hyatt, McLean, VA. Buds Yellow Green Group 144B. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel shaped, 3¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 (occasionally 6) wavy lobes, very fragrant, Yellow Group 10A (Barium Yellow), deepening to 12B (Aureolin) in dorsal lobe sector with near Yellow Orange Group 14A long, narrow twin blotches on each side of midline there. Calyx ¼", Green Group 138A. Truss 5½" across x 4" tall, ball-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 5" x 2⅜", elliptic to nearly narrowly obovate, obtuse, cuneate, flat, grossly glabrous, glossy, ciliate. Green Group 137A to 139A. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately, 5' tall x 3½' wide in 10+ years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
YELLOW SAUCER: [ R. aberconwayi x ( R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Fabia')] F2. Cross (1972) raised, and introduced by Cecil C. Smith, St. Paul, OR. Buds shaded orange red. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped but quite flat with short tube, 3" across x ½" deep, with 5, evenly rounded, somewhat recurved lobes. Yellow Group 12C (Aureolin) at lobe edges shading to 13B (Lemon Yellow) in throat, newly opened flowers mottled Orange Red Group 33B (Fire Red), particularly on reverse, (soon fades), dorsal Red Group 45B delicate spotting covering ¾", small red rim around ovary inside corolla. Calyx ⅛", yellow edge. Truss 5" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, with up to 8 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2-3 years, 2 -2¾" x ⅝ - 1⅛", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, coriaceous, slightly undulate, glabrous, glossy. Green Group 136B. Plant upright, semi-dwarf, branching moderately with stiff branches, 4' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
