Abstract
They planted the azalea cultivars 'Stewartsonian', 'Delaware Valley White' and 'Pink Ruffles' in a landscape site with a heavy clay loam into which 4 inches of pine bark had been incorporated. Growth of the azaleas was greatest for plants produced in a 3 bark, 1 sand and 1 Birmingham shale or the composted pine bark. When the cultivars were considered separately performance, of 'Delaware Valley White' was significantly better when produced in the bark: sand: shale than when produced in composted or uncomposted bark. 'Pink Ruffles' did equally well in all 3 media. The bark : sand: shale and the composted pine bark produced the best growth of 'Stewartsonian'. Because the sand and shale increase the cost, growers could reduce costs and produce plants satisfactory for landscaping in composted pine bark.
