Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) heavily ruffled lobes, Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal) with Red Group 44C blotch in dorsal throat. Calyx ¼", Yellow Green Group 144A. Flower cluster 3½" across, 3-4-flowered, flat. Free flowering. Leaves flat, 1¼" x ¾", elliptic, ciliate, obtuse with apiculus, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 139B, upper and lower surfaces with occasional setae, particularly along veins (visible with lens); leaves held well through winter. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 16" x 16" in 4 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

CONSTANCE BURNETT: A deciduous azalea. White Swan (Exbury) (unregistered) x 'Nancy Waterer'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduce by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Green Yellow Group 1A. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, fragrant, Yellow Group 13C (Straw Yellow) flushed slightly Orange Group 24B (Tangerine Orange) with no markings. Calyx ⅛" Yellow Green Group 151B. No stamens. Truss 5" x 2", dome-shaped, with 21-25 flowers. Leaves 2¼" x 1", elliptic, acute, knobbed, narrowly cuneate, Yellow Green Group 144B, grossly glabrous (rare setae), under surface with rare setae and considerable hairs along midrib (visible with lens), Yellow Orange Group 21D flushed 15B in autumn. Plant upright, branching moderately, 2½' tall x 1½' wide in four years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

CRIMSON STAIN: 'Mars' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1966) by A. F. Serbin, MD. Raised and introduced by Robert G. Shanklin, Old Lyme, CT (now of Pensacola, FL). Buds strong purplish red 10RP 4/12 (Nickerson). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, opens diffused white to 10RP 4/12, fades to white in 4-6 days; early throat deep pink 10RP 6/12, lobe edges diffused strong purplish red 10RP 5/12, reverse deep pink 10RP 6/12 to strong pink 10RP 7/8 Calyx ¼", white. Truss 6" across x 5" tall, ball-shaped, with 11-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2-3 years, 5" x 1¾", narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, rounded, glabrous, dull, moderate olive green 5GY 4/3, with medium, easily rubbed off, buff indumentum. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 4' x 4' in 14 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -15°F.

CRIMSON TIDE: A deciduous azalea. 'Homebush' x Red Letter (unregistered IIam Group azalea from Dr. Yeates, New Zealand; in trade 12-15 years). Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1979) by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 45C. Flowers of good substance, 2¼" across x 1½" long, tubular funnel-shaped, with 5 frilled lobes and tufted, short, quite compact petaloid center (variable among flowers), Red Group 47B, outside of tube Red Group 39A (Jasper Red). 0-3 stamens. Calyx ¼- 3 / 16 ", Green Group 142C. Truss 4-6" across x 2½" high, dome-shaped, with 20-40 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 2½" x 1½", glabrous, elliptic, acute, knobbed, cuneate, ciliate, flat, Green Group 139B, Yellow Green Group 151 with Green Group 132A markings in autumn, under surface slightly setose and hairy (visible with lens). Plant upright, branching moderately, 3' tall x 2' wide in 5 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

CYPRUS: 'Mrs. Furnival' x R. catawbiense var. album . Cross (1953), raised, and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Synonym: Capri. Buds Red Purple Group 65D. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, white with bold dorsal spotted blotch Greyed Red Group 179A. Calyx 1 / 16 ", green edged red. Truss 6½" across x 7" high, ball-shaped, with 19-20 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4⅞" x 2", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate to somewhat rounded, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant rounded, branching well, 6' tall x 7' wide in 29 years. Blooms last week in May (midseason). Hardy to at least -20°F.

ERIEDELL: An evergreen azalea. ('Roberta Ann' x 'Boudoir') x 'Boudoir'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 55A. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes. Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose) with no markings. No stamens. Calyx ¼", Yellow Green Group 154A. Floral cluster 4" x 4", ball-shaped, 4-5-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1¾" x ⅝", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, narrowly cuneate, ciliate, glossy, grossly glabrous with few setae along mid-rib and veins, Green Group 137C, under surface moderately setose (visible with lens). Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 3' tall x 2½' wide in 5 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

GIRARD'S PARFAIT: A deciduous azalea. 'Homebush' x 'Cecile'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 50B (Claret Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 frilled lobes, very fragrant, white with Red Group 49A (Dawn Pink) lobe edging, ¾" x ½" Yellow Orange Group 14A blotch on dorsal lobe, reverse white flushed 49A. Calyx ⅜" -¼", Green Group 139D. Truss 6" across x 3", dome-shaped, with 25-30 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3" x 1¾", broadly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, grossly glabrous, flat, Yellow Green Group 149C, Yellow Orange Group 16B to 22A in autumn. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 3' tall x 2' wide in 5 years. Blooms mid-, late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

GIRARD'S PINK: An evergreen azalea. 'Girard's Crimson' x 'Girard's Rose'. Cross, raised, and introduced (1979) by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 50B (Claret Rose). Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 52A(Crimson) with Red Purple Group 58A dorsal blotch. Calyx ¼", Yellow Green Group 154B. Flower cluster 3-4-flowered, flat. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter, 1" x ¾", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, glossy, Green Group 139B, upper surface with widely spaced setae, lower midrib setose and few on blade (all visible with lens). Plant broad, dwarf, branching well, 15" tall x 18" wide in 4 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

GOLDEN POM POM: A Deciduous azalea. ('Homebush' x 'Klondyke') F 2 . Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Yellow Orange Group 14B. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, fragrant, Yellow Group 9A (Canary Yellow) with Yellow Orange Group 14B blotches on dorsal lobes. No stamens. Calyx ¼", 14B. Truss 5" across x 3" tall, dome-shaped, with 18-24 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3¼" x 1½", elliptic to broadly elliptic, acute, cuneate, ciliate, flat, glossy, grossly glabrous but with a few setae and hairs visible with lens, under surface with hairy midrib and veins (visible with lens), dorsally Yellow Green Group 144B, Yellow Orange Group 14C to 17B in autumn. Plant rounded, branching well, 2½' x 2½' in 5 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -30°F.

HINDUSTAN: ( R. maximum x 'Goldsworth Orange') x ('America' x 'Gertrud Schäle'). Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Red Group 51A, developing to Red Group 48D. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Orange Group 20C (Orange Buff), perimeter flushed Red Group 55D (to 62D) (garden effect is orange), Yellow Orange Group 17D spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector, reverse with 62C ribs. Calyx minute, greenish-yellow. Truss 6½" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, with 17 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 5¼" x 2¾"; elliptic, mucronate, rounded, concave at base, glabrous, dull, Green Group 139A. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 7½' x 7½' in 14 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

IRISH YAKU: R. yakushimanum (Exbury form) x 'Mars'. Cross (before 1970) and raised by Comerford's (Nursery), Marion, OR., later raised and introduced by Patrick J. McGuinness, West Haven, CT. Buds Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" x 3", with 6 wavy lobes, 55D, reverse 55B. Calyx minute. Truss 6" across x 7" high, ball-to-dome-shaped, with 22 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3-4 years, 6" x 2½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute, cuneate to rounded, slightly convex, of heavy substance, glabrous and glossy when mature. Green Group 137A, with light brown, easily rubbed off, light (somewhat floccose with lens) indumentum. Plant broad, semi-dwarf, branching well, 3' tall x 4' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

JEREMIAH: An evergreen azalea. (Pink Dawn (unregistered) x 'Girard's Rose') x 'Girard's Rose'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, Red Group 52C (Carmine Rose) with no markings. Calyx as corolla. Flower cluster 2½" across, flat, 3-4-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves 1" x ¼", oblanceolate to obovate, mucronate, cuneate, flat, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146B, held well through winter. Plant rounded, branching well, semi-dwarf, 2½' x 2½' in 5 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

LAURIE: R. carolinianum var. album x ( R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens (P. J. M. group)). Cross (1957) by Edmund Mezitt. Raised, and introduced (1965) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Buds Red Purple Group 70D (Magnolia Purple). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x ¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes (some years there are semi-double flowers on some branches), golden spotting in dorsal and some in adjacent lobes sectors, 70D stripes on reverse. Calyx 1 /16", green. Terminal flower cluster of 28-35 flowers composed of 2-, 3-flowered inflorescences, 3" across x 2¾" tall, ball-shaped. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 2¼" x 1", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, obtuse, rounded, grossly glabrous, glossy, dark green, fragrant when rubbed or crushed, under surface with closely spaced, small tan to golden, inconspicuous scales. Plant broad, semi-dwarf, branching well, with willowy branches, 2' x 2' in 10 years. Blooms second week of May. Hardy to at least -20°F. In winter stems are red and leaves are coppery-bronze.

LUXOR: R. catawbiense var. album x 'Goldfort'. Cross (1952), raised, and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Synonym: Morocco. Buds Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, with 5-7 evenly rounded lobes, Yellow Group 11D (Empire Yellow), with dorsal, Greyed Orange Group 165C spots. Calyx minute, greenish-yellow. Truss 7" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, with 14-15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4⅞" x 2", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, obtuse with short apiculus, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant broad, branching well, 7' tall x 10' wide in 30 years. Blooms third week of May (early midseason). Hardy to at least -25°F.

MADRAS: 'Mars' x 'Fanfare'. Cross (1958), raised, and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Synonym: Bengal. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red) with dorsal blotch Greyed Purple Group 187A. Style pink. Calyx minute, light red. Truss 7" across x 6" high, conical, with 19-21 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4¾" x 2", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate to somewhat rounded, glabrous, slightly convex, with irregularly undulate margins. Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant broad, branching moderately, 5' tall x 10' wide in 24 years. Blooms third week of May (early midseason). Hardy to at least -15°F.

MADRID: Dexter #L-1 (unnamed) x 'America'. Cross (1953), raised, and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Synonym: Seville. Buds Red Purple Group 73A. Flowers of good substance, 3¼" across x 1½" long, widely funnel-shaped, with 5-6 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 68C (Roseine Purple) soon aging to 62D, with bold dorsal Red Purple Group 64A (Ruby Red) blotch. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6" x 6", ball-shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4⅞" x 2⅛", elliptic, apiculate or obtuse with apiculus, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 5' tall x 6' wide in ±10 years. Blooms last week of May (midseason). Hardy to at least -20°F.

MIST MAIDEN: R. yakushimanum selection. Grown (1951) from seed from the Royal Horticultural Society, Wisley, England (F. Hanger) and introduced (1962) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Pictured in Van Veen, Rhododendrons in America , First Edition, 1969, p. 80. Buds Red Purple Group 68B (Roseine Purple). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1⅞" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 65C aging to white, with Greyed Yellow Group 160A dorsal spotting and dorsal lobes with single 68A stripes. Calyx 1/16", greenish-yellow. Truss 6" across x 5¾" tall, ball-shaped, with 14-17 flowers. Free flowering when plant is mature. Leaves held 5 years, 5¾" x 1¾", oblanceolate, acute, cuneate, glabrous when mature, Yellow Green Group 147A, convex, with moderately heavy, chamois-like, Greyed Orange Group 164C indumentum. New growth with greyish-tan tomentum. Winter buds and stems grey. Plant broad, branching well, 5' tall x 11' wide in 31 years. Blooms third week of May (early mid-season). Hardy to at least -18°F.

MOONLIGHT ROSE: A deciduous azalea. 'Homebush' x 'Strawberry Ice'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 49A (Dawn Pink). Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, not fragrant, Red Group 50C (Claret Rose), throat Yellow Orange Group 15A (Buttercup Yellow), with dorsal 1" x 1", 15A-C blotch. Calyx ¼", Green Group 143C. Truss 5" across x 2½" high, dome-shaped, with 5-9 flowers. Leaves 2½" x 1", elliptic, acute, cuneate, ciliate, with moderately close setae (particularly on midrib, along with hairs), lower surface with fewer setae (principally on midrib and veins) and hairs on midrib (all visible with lens), flat, Yellow Green Group 144A. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 2½' tall x 1½' wide in 5 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

NILE: R. catawbiense var. album x R. wardii (L. S. & T. #5679). Cross (1954), raised, and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Synonym: Sahara. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow), with Red Group 46A (Currant Red) dorsal blotch. Calyx ⅛", yellow edged red Truss 5" x 5", ball-shaped, with 13-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾" x 1⅞", elliptic, apiculate to somewhat obtuse with apiculus, rounded to slightly auriculate, glabrous, glossy, near Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant rounded, branching well, 11' x 11' in 28 years. Blooms third week of May (early midseason). Hardy to at least -20°F.

OLGA MEZITT: R. minus, compact form x R. dauricum hybrid, pink-flrd. Cross (1958) by Edmund Mezitt. Raised and introduced (1975) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly to tubular funnel-shaped, 1½" across x ¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 62B (Phlox Pink), with inconspicuous gold green dorsal blotch that ages to reddish-brown. Calyx ½", colored as corolla. Truss 4" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, with ±12 flowers. Leaves held 1 year, 2" x 1", lanceolate, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, glossy, convex, Yellow Green Group 147A in summer, mahogany in winter, under surface bronze scaly. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 4' tall x 2' wide in 15 years. Blooms first week of May. Hardy to at least-15°F. [ Correct name from 'Olga' to 'Olga Mezitt' and change parentage to minus , compact form x dauricum hybrid, pink-flrd. - mod 07/09/2015, ref ]

ORANGE CLOAK: A deciduous azalea. ('Gibraltar' x 'Klondyke') x 'Gibraltar'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Orange Group 29B (Carrot Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 5 frilled lobes, fragrant, Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red), with compact, petaloid tuft of same color in center of flower. 2-4 stamens. Calyx ¼", Green Group 142C. Truss 5-6" across x 2½" high, flat, with 18-20 flowers. Leaves 2½" x 1¼", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute (knobbed), cuneate, grossly glabrous (with rare setae), under surface with setae along veins and midrib also hairy (all seen with lens), flat, Yellow Green Group 144A, Yellow Green Group 153C (Olive Yellow) in autumn. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, 2' tall x 1½' wide in 4 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -25°F.

ORANGE JOLLY: A deciduous azalea. 'Homebush' x 'Gibraltar'. Cross (1971), raised, and introduced (1979) by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red). Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, fragrant, Orange Group 25A (Orpiment Orange) flushed Orange Group 29B (Carrot Red) on all lobes, inside and reverse. No stamens. Calyx 3/16", Red Group 39D. Truss 6¼" across x 2½" tall, dome-shaped, with 18-28 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3¼" x 1¼", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute, (knobbed), cuneate, grossly glabrous (with very few setae), under surface with a few setae and fairly hairy along midrib (all visible with lens), flat. Green Group 139C, Yellow Green Group 151A marked with 153D in autumn. Plant upright, branching well, 2½' tall x 2' wide in 4 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

PAULINE BRALIT: R. fortunei x R. catawbiense (a low, white selection). Cross (1958) by Edmund Mezitt. Raised and introduced (1965) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Buds Red Group 51C (Rhodonite Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¾" long, with 7 wavy lobes, fragrant, White Group 155C, shading to 55D at 2 dorsal lobe edges, with three 1", dorsal, Greyed Orange Group 164A rays in throat, throat reverse 55D. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 5½" across x 4" tall, ball-shaped, with 9-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3½" x 1¾", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, dull, Green Group 139A, texture heavy. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 5' tall x 3' wide in 20 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

RED FRILLED: (selected red hybrid R. catawbiense seedling) F 2 . Cross (before 1960) by Edmund Mezitt. Raised and introduced (1964) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Synonym: Low Red Frilled. Buds Red Purple Group 60B. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 60D, with considerable dark red spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector, reverse Red Purple Group 57A. Calyx ¼", green. Truss 4" across x 4½" tall, conical, with 12-15 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4½-5¼" x 2", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute, rounded, glabrous, glossy, dark green, coriaceous, margins undulate. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 3' tall x 2' wide in 8 years. Blooms first week of May. Hardy to at least -15°F.

RUBY GLOW: An evergreen azalea. Pink Dawn (unregistered) x 'Girard's Hot Shot'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1979) by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Orange Red Group 34A. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, Red Group 46C (Turkey Red) with 46A dorsal blotch and Orange Red Group 34A edging. 6 stamens. Calyx as corolla. Flower cluster 3½-4½" across with 3-5 flowers; many terminals with solitary flowers, however. Very free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1½" x ½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, with a few setae on both surfaces (visible with lens), Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, branching well, 1½' x 1½' in 4 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

SAYBROOK GLORY: An evergreen azalea. 'Roberta Ann' x 'Fedora'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 58C with 61C (Tyrian Purple) dorsal blotch. Calyx ⅝", Yellow Green Group 154A. Flower cluster 5" across x 4" high, flat, with 3 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter, 1½-2" x ¾", elliptic, acute (knobbed), ciliate, cuneate, flat, glossy, with some setae on both surfaces visible with lens, Green Group 137C. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 1½' x 1½' in four years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -1 5 -20°F.

SUN FROLIC: A deciduous azalea. 'Golden Oriole' x 'Nancy Waterer'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Orange Red Group 30C (Saturn Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 17B (Indian Yellow) flushed Orange Group 25B (Nasturtium Orange), tube Orange Group 29A (Carrot Red) on outside. Calyx ⅛", Yellow Green Group 144B. Truss 5½" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, with 15-18 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3" x 1¼", elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, ciliate upper surface moderately setose and lower midrib hairy (all visible with lens), flat. Yellow Green Group 144A, Greyed Orange Group 164C in autumn. Plant upright, branching moderately, 2½' tall x 1½' wide in 4 years. Blooms mid-, late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

WALTER HUNNEWELL: Parentage unknown. Origin of the plant is unknown except that it was brought to Weston Nurseries in the 1950's by Walter Hunnewell from the Hunnewell Estate. Original plant probably does not exist. Named by Willard Hunnewell. Raised and introduced (1976) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Synonym: Hunnewell #1. Buds Red Purple Group 58A (Indian Lake). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, center of flower (more extensive on dorsal lobe) white with ±½" edging 60B, reverse mostly Red Purple Group 58A shading lighter toward calyx. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 4" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, with 14-16 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4-5" x 2-2½", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, dark green, heavy texture, midrib (light yellowish green) and veins prominent. Heavy red stems support new growth. Plant broad, branching well, with stiff branches, 3' x 3' in 12 years. Blooms first week of June. Hardy to at least -15°F.

WEDDING BOUQUET: A deciduous azalea. 'Homebush' x (White Swan (unregistered Exbury) x 'Persil'). Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Red Group 37B with lighter to white streaks. Flowers of good substance, open-funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes and short tufted petaloid center colored as and not exceeding ¾ size of corolla, which is white flushed Red Group 49B (Venetian Pink) particularly toward periphery, with Yellow Group 8A (Mimosa Yellow), ½", dorsal blotch, throat and reverse white; quite fragrant. No stamens. Calyx ⅛", Green Group 141D. Truss 5½" across x 3" tall, ball-to-dome-shaped, with 28-36 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 2½" x 1⅛" elliptic, obtuse, cuneate, ciliate, upper surface with few widely spaced setae and lower midrib setose and hairy (all visible with lens), flat, Green Group 138A, Greyed Yellow Group 162A in autumn. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 2½' tall x 2' wide in 4 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least -25°F.

WESTON'S PINK DIAMOND: ( R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens (P.J.M. group)) x R. mucronulatum 'Cornell Pink'. Cross (1964) by Edmund Mezitt. Raised and introduced (1977) by Weston Nurseries, Hopkinton, MA. Buds Red Purple Group 57B (Rose Bengal). Flowers flat saucer-shaped, 1¼" across x 1½" deep, with 5 wavy lobes, with ¾" long, loose, ruffled, pom pom center of petaloid stamens, Red Purple Group 67D, dorsal brown, tinted orange, spotting in throat. No stamens. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 3½" x 3½", ball-shaped, with 8-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 1 year, 1½" x ½", lanceolate, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface bronze scaly. Plant upright, branching well, with stiff branches, 3½' tall x 2' wide in 7 years. Blooms third week of April. Hardy to at least -10°F.

YELLOW STARS: A deciduous azalea. 'Narcissaflora' (Ghent) x 'Nancy Waterer'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Buds Yellow Green Group 144C. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, very fragrant, Yellow Group 5A (Dresden Yellow) flushed Orange Group 24C (Tangerine Orange), reverse similarly colored. No stamens. Calyx ⅛- 3/16", Yellow Green Group 144B. Truss 4½-5" across x 2½-3" tall, dome-shaped, with 22-28 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3¼" x 1¾", elliptic, acute, (knobbed), cuneate, ciliate, flat, upper and lower surfaces with a few setae and hairs particularly along midrib and veins, Yellow Green Group 144A, Yellow Orange Group 14C in autumn. Plant upright, branching moderately, 3½' tall x 1½' wide in 5 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
