CORINNA BORDEN: An evergreen azalea. R. kaempferi (white form) open pollinated. Seed collected (1965) by Dr. T. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised and introduced (1970+) by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Wilmington, DE. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1" long, with 5 frilled lobes, Purple Group 75C (Phlox Purple) edging, gradually shading to 75D (Rose Purple) in throat, barely visible dorsal blotch, Calyx ⅛", hairy, green. Inflorescence 2½ - 3" across x 1½" high, 3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves not held well in winter, 1¼" x ⅝", elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, dull, ciliate, upper surface strigose (scattered), under surface moderately strigose (particularly along midrib) (both seen with lens). Plant approximately 1½' tall x 2' wide in 7 years, dwarf, broad, branching well with upright branches. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
DOCTOR THOMAS MCMILLAN: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Some growers may have under breeder's #S-13. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 6+6-12, wavy lobes (double), Red Purple Group 68A (Roseine Purple), with Red Purple Group 64B (Magenta Rose) blotch in throat below dorsal 3 - 5 lobes. No stamens. Calyx ¼", 68A to Yellow Green Group 144C. Inflorescence 4" across x 2" high, 3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves retained well through winter, 1 - 1¼" x 9/16 - 5/8", narrowly obovate, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A, ciliate, both surfaces moderately setose (dorsal heavier) (seen with lens). Plant rounded, branching moderately, 2½' x 2½' in 12 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
GABRIELLE HILL: An evergreen azalea. 'Chinyeyi' (Satsuki) x W. Leith (from Hillier, England). Cross (1961) by Dr. T. Rokujo, Tokyo, Japan. Raised and introduced (mid-1970's) by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Wilmington, DE. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5 ruffled lobes. Red Group 52D (Carmine Rose) with small 53B (Cardinal Red) blotch in dorsal (and somewhat on adjacent) lobe sector. Calyx ⅛", pale green. Inflorescence 2-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held only at terminals in winter, 1" x ½", elliptic to near broadly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glossy. Green Group 137B, ciliate, upper surface moderately strigose, under surface strigose on mid-rib and rarely on secondary veins (both seen with lens). Plant dwarf, branching well with decumbent branches, 20" tall x 5' wide in 23 years. Blooms in early to mid-June. Hardy to at least -5°F.
GRADUATION: R. lutescens x R. viridescens . Cross (1969) and raised by Carl G. Heller, M.D., Poulsbo, WA. Registered and introduced by Peggy Moore, Bremerton, WA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 3½ cm. across x 2½ cm. long with 5 evenly rounded lobes, color of corollas vary even in individual truss, Yellow Group 11C (Naples Yellow), some edged in Orange Red Group 35C, a few 35D edged 35C (all Brick Red), dorsal lobe spotting, brownish on yellow flowers and crimson on rose pink flowers. Calyx negligible, densely scaly on outside and with long, prominent, peripheral hairs. Pedicel long, 2 cm. Truss 8-10 cm. across x 4-8 cm. tall, dome-shaped, with 5 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 - 3 years, 6 - 7½ cm. x 3 - 4 cm. elliptic, widely acute (knobbed), rounded, glabrous except for widely scattered, long cilia arising just inside dorsal leaf margin, Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with tiny (variable in size), moderately spaced, light Yellow scales. Plant rounded, branching well, 5' tall x 4½' wide in 15 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 12°F.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS: An evergreen azalea. Anytime Tetra (an unregistered colchicine-induced evergreen azalea) x R. nakaharae 'Mariko'. Cross (1974), raised, introduced (1984) by Dr. August E. Kehr, Hendersonville, NC. Some distribution under breeders number: 306-1. Buds reddish-orange. Flowers of good substance, funnel-shaped, 3" x 3" with 6 wavy lobes + central "petals" (double), Red Group 42C, with dorsal purplish-red blotch. 0-3 stamens. Calyx ⅜", green. Inflorescence 4" across x 5" high, lax, with 2-3 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 1 - 2" x ½ - 1", narrowly obovate (few elliptic), mucronate, narrowly cuneate, bullate, deep green, ciliate, upper surface moderately setose and underside with veins quite setose (few between) (all visible with lens), leaves retained well through winter. Plant broad, branching well with decumbent branches, 18" tall x 24" wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
NACOOCHEE: A Choptank River hybrid deciduous azalea. ( R. atlanticum aff.; 'Marydel' is a registered clone.) Cross (1975), raised and introduced (1982) by W. George Beasley, Transplant Nursery, Lavonia, GA. Registered by Mrs. Beasley (Mary S.). Described and pictured in Wayside Gardens catalog, 1982. Buds Red Purple Group 65C. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¼" long, with 5 wavy lobes, very fragrant, white or pale pink, washed and veined with 65C. Calyx ⅛", pale green. Truss 4" x 4", ball-shaped, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 1¼" x ¾", near narrowly obovate to elliptic, mucronate, cuneate to almost rounded, flat, ciliate, medium green, upper surface with scattered glandular hairs, under surface pubescent (both seen with lens). Plant broad, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
RUFFLES AND FRILLS: 'Hydon Glow' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced by Milton Wildfong, Mission, B.C., Canada. Buds Red Group 43B (Scarlet). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1¾" long, with 6 frilled lobes, fragrant, throat Yellow Group 11B (Naples Yellow), shading through cream to Red Group 36C (Orient Pink) at lobe edges, 2 Red Group 39B (Jasper Red) rays in dorsal throat with peripheral spotting on dorsal lobes, reverse irregularly suffused Red Group 38A (Azalea Pink). Calyx irregular, to 2", colored as corolla with pink mottling as corolla reverse. Truss 7" across x 5" tall, dome-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4 - 5' 'x 1¾ - 2½", elliptic, acute, cuneate to rounded, concave, of heavy texture, dull, Green Group 136B, with light, patchy, golden indumentum (not too visible without lens). New foliage bronze. Plant upright, branching moderately, 4' tall x 2½' wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
SAMISEN: R. yakushimanum (Exbury Form) selfed by Ben Nelson, Suquamish, WA(1965). A.R.S. Seed Exchange #193-1966 seed grown by and plant selected and introduced (1976) by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Wilmington, DE. Distributed under gardener's No., BIF#1. Buds Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal) shading to 57D at base. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 1¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, with near ¼" Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose) edging shading to 56C, minor rusty spotting in 2 areas on either side of main vein down center of dorsal lobe sector. Calyx minute, colorless. Truss 4½" across x 3½" high, dome-shaped, with 17 (12-18) flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 3½ - 4½" x 1¼" - 2", narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute to apiculate, cuneate to rounded, flat to convex, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with medium, plastered. Greyed Orange Group 145B (rusty) indumentum. New growth white tomentose. Plant broad, rounded branching very well, 5' tall x 8' wide in 18 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -11°F.
SAPPHO'S CHOICE: 'Sappho' x 'Catanea'. Cross by Emil V. Bohnel, Pearl River, NY. Seed from A.R.S. Seed Exchange #489-1976. Raised and introduced by Lonnie M. Player, Fayetteville, NC. Buds Red Purple Group 62D. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes. White Group 155C, with prominent Red Purple Group 71A (Beetroot Purple) flare of spotting (mostly coalesced to distinct peripheral spotting), 1" x 1½", in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx minute, Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 6" across x 5" tall, ball-to dome-shaped, with 17 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4-5" x 1½ - 2⅛", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, glabrous, glossy. Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with very light, colorless to pale yellow, indumentum (almost invisible, even with lens). Plant upright, branching well, 27" x 27" in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least +8°F. Blooms are very similar to 'Sappho' but registrant considers plant habit far superior.
SPICY LIGHTS: A deciduous azalea. R. prinophyllum x unknown. Cross (1963), raised, and introduced (1983) by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chanhassen, MN. Named by Dr. Harold Pellett and Susan Moe. Described by Laurie Mainquist. Registered by Dr. Pellet. Pictured, with brief description, in American Nurseryman 158(4), August 15, 1983. Buds Greyed Orange Group 176D. Flowers narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 5.4 cm. across x 3.2 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes (dorsal, frilled), fragrant, Red Group 37B with Greyed Red Group 180B veining and Yellow Orange Group 22B (Orange Buff) dorsal blotch, tube 180B on outside. Calyx 2 mm., Green Group 139C. Truss 10 cm. across x 5 cm. tall, dome-shaped, with 11 flowers. Leaves 6 - 8.7 cm. x 2.5 - 5.2 cm., between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate to between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 147A, midrib pubescent (with lens), ciliate, under surface midrib and veins strigose; fall leaves with slight purpling. Plant broad, rounded, branching moderately, with arching branches, 1.8 m. tall x 2 m. wide in 20 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -35°F.
