ACIERTO: ( R. chlorops x R. diaprepes ) x 'Bonito'. Cross (1963), raised, and registered by Dr. David W. Goheen, Camas, WA. Introduced (1982) by Dr. Lansing Bulgin, Sherwood, OR. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 1½" long with 7 wavy to almost frilled lobes, fragrant, Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose), with ± 1", Red Group 47D (Geranium Lake) flares (rays) deep in dorsal half of throat, with a few spots above dorsal flares; lower half throat is Orange Group 27C. Calyx ⅛", green with red rim. Truss 8" across by 6" high, somewhat ball shaped, with 16-18 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 2", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate to between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, convex, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches. 12' tall x 6' wide in 20 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
AMARILLO: R. hemsleyanum x 'Autumn Gold'. Cross (1963), raised, and introduced by Dr. David W. Goheen, Camas, WA. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 1½" long, with 7 wavy lobes (dorsal lobes reflexed), fragrant, Yellow Group 13B (Lemon Yellow) in throat out to lobe area, shading to Yellow Orange Group 14D (Chrome Yellow) for ± 1" lobe edging, reverse Orange Red Group 31D (Mars Orange). Calyx ⅛", upper lobes 40A, lower lobes 145D. Truss 8" across x 6" high, dome shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3-4 years, 6½" x 2½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, apiculate, somewhat auriculate, glabrous, dull, Green Group 137B. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 12' tall x 8' wide in 20 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
BAGOLY'S BEAUTY: 'Mars' x R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'. Cross (1966) and raised by Lewis Bagoly, Strafford, PA. Raised (after 1969) and introduced by Marie Tietjens, Blue Bell, PA. Buds Red Purple Group 58B (Rose Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes. Red Purple Group 68C (Roseine Purple), reverse 68B. Calyx negligible. Truss 5" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, with 16 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4½-5½" x 2-2¼", narrowly obovate to near elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, glabrous, almost glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A, with very light (not very visible without lens), light beige, plastered indumentum. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 5' tall x 6' wide in 18 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
BOB ELMER: A Chinquapin Hill hybrid deciduous azalea. 'Orangeade' x R. austrinum . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Gus and Thérèse Elmer, Jr., Pass Christian, MS. Flowers widely funnel shaped with quite flat face, with 6, wavy, overlapping lobes, quite fragrant, Orange Group 29A (Carrot Red), shaded Orange Red Group 33A (Capsicum Red) at lobe edges and on reverse, Yellow Orange Group 23A (Cadmium Orange) flare in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ⅛", greenish. Truss 3 - 4" x 3 - 4", ball shaped, with 10-12 flowers. Leaves 2¾ - 3¼" x ¾ - 1", oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface pubescent (particularly along veins), strigose along midrib (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 7' tall x 2½' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid to late April (in southern MS). Hardy to at least 0°F.
DEAN HALL: Parentage unknown. Cross (c. 1967), raised, and introduced by Maurice E. Hall, Bridgewater, MA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, with 5-7 frilled lobes, Red Group 56D, with light mustard color spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx insignificant. Truss 5" x 5", ball shaped, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 6" x 2", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 139A. Plant upright, branching well, 7' x 7' in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25°F.
DELAWARE BLUE: A deciduous azalea. A selected form of R. viscosum v. glaucum . Plant collected in wild at Pierson's Corner, DE (1977), raised, and introduced by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA and Wilmington, DE. Buds sometimes faintly pink. Flowers of good substance, very narrowly tubular funnel shaped (tube ⅛" wide x 1" long), 1¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 recurved lobes, very fragrant, whiter than 155D, with red tipped glandular hairs on outside of tube Calyx minute. Truss 2½ - 4" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, with 4-8 flowers. Leaves 1¾ - 2" x ¾ - 1", narrowly obovate to near obovate, flat, mucronate, narrowly cuneate, glabrous, dull, dark green, ciliate (hairs colorless), under surface greyed blue green, glaucous, midrib rarely strigose (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, branching moderately with average to stiff branches, 10' tall x 5' wide in 7 years. Blooms in June and early July. Hardy to at least -10°F.
DHABI: An evergreen azalea. 'Vuyk's Rosyred' x 'Moonbeam'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (1982) by Garda Griswold, Griswold Nursery, Kirkland, WA. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 68A (Roseine Purple), with Red Group 53C (Cardinal Red) spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector. Calyx minute 138D. Inflorescence 2 flowered. Free flowering. Leaves 1⅝ - 2" x ¾ - 1", elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 136A, ciliate, rarely strigose, under surface moderately strigose along veins (rarely between) (hairs seen with lens). Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 7" tall x 8" wide in 3 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
DINY DEE: 'Mrs. Lammot Copeland' x unnamed late, deep yellow. Cross (1969) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1982) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Orange Red Group 34B. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Yellow Group 13B (Lemon Yellow), with 2 brown rays below intersections of dorsal 3 lobes (in throat). Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 4" high, flat, with 9-12 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4-5" x 1¾-2¼", near elliptic, convex to somewhat revolute, apiculate, cuneate, of heavy texture, dull. Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 3½' tall x 3' wide in 12 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
DOUBLE DELIGHT: A deciduous azalea 'Narcissiflora' x selected unnamed seedling. Cross (1972), raised and introduced by Jack O. Bunnell, Olympia, WA. Buds greenish yellow. Flowers of good substance, narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 5+5 evenly rounded lobes (some central lobes and "petals" irregular and/or aborted), very fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 15A & B (Buttercup Yellow). No stamens. Calyx ¼", 144B. Floriferous. Leaves narrowly obovate to near elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, 2 3/16 - 2¾'' x 1⅛ - 1 5/16", flat, glossy, ciliate, moderately strigose. Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface moderately pubescent and strigose along veins (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, branching well, 46" tall x 55" across in 10 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least -5°F. Fall leaves combination of red, gold, maroon, and green.
DOUBLE PLEASURE: A deciduous azalea. 'Rosea Plena' x R. albrechtii . Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Jack O. Bunnell, Olympia, WA. Buds Red Group 46A (Currant Red). Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5+5 slightly wavy lobes, Red Group 53C & D (Cardinal Red), reverse 53A. No stamens. 2 whorls of pointed, concave (boat shaped) alternating lobes creating a star-like flower. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 4" across x 2" high, dome shaped, with 14-16 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 2½ - 2⅞" x 1 - 1 5/1 6", narrowly obovate, acute to slightly mucronate, narrowly cuneate, glossy, Green Group 137A, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface midrib and near area pubescent and rarely strigose (particularly along veins) (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 63" tall x 70" across in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -5°F. Fall leaves a combination of red, dark maroon, and green.
DUXBURY: 'Goldfort' x ( R. campylocarpum x R. williamsianum ). Cross (1970) by Lewis Bagoly, Phoenixville, PA. From A.R.S. Seed Exchange 1971, #565. Raised and introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Lawson, Duxbury, MA. Buds shaded Yellow Orange Group 18B (Amber Yellow) and Orange Group 27A (Salmon). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 7 slightly wavy lobes. Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow) shading to 3B in throat. Truss 7" across x 6" high, dome-shaped, with 7-11 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, wider than lanceolate, others between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, acute with apriculus, rounded, convex, glossy. Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, branching well, 7' x 7' in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
GOLDEN WEDDING: R. yakushimanum x 'Mrs. Lammot Copeland'. Cross (1969) by H. L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1980) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Orange Red Group 35B (Brick Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, with 7 wavy lobes, Yellow Orange Group 15D (Chrome Yellow), with 2 minor, 35B rays in dorsal throat. Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 3½" high, flat, with 10-14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4¾" x 2", elliptic, margin undulate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, Green Group 137A. Plant semi dwarf, branching well, 2½' x 2½' in 12 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
MARY ANNE ELMER: A Chinquapin Hill hybrid deciduous azalea, 'Orangeade' x R. austrinum . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Gus and Thérèse Elmer, Jr., Pass Christian, MS. Buds Orange Group 24B (Tangerine Orange). Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 3" long, with 5 wavy lobes (lobes somewhat reflexed; lower lobes may be rolled also), quite fragrant, 24B, tips of lobes and reverse shaded Orange Red Group 30C (Saturn Red), with Orange Group 25A (Orpiment Orange) dorsal flare. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6" across x 3" tall, flat, with 10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3½ - 3¾" x 1 - 1½", narrowly elliptic to somewhat oblanceolate, acute with long apiculus, narrowly cuneate, dull, Yellow Green Group 147B, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface strigose (mainly along midrib) and pubescent (chiefly along veins) (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 5' tall x 4' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid to late April (in southern MS). Hardy to at least 0°F.
MARY CHANTRY: R. yakushimanum x 'Britannia'. Cross (1966) and raised for 2-3 years by Lester Brandt, Tacoma, WA. Raised by Mary Chantry, Seattle, WA. Registered by Linda Malland and introduced (1973-4) by Griswold Nursery, Kirkland, WA. Buds Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, open funnel campanulate, 2" across x 2½" long, with 5 frilled lobes, fragrant, Red Group 55B shading to 55D in lobe centers and throat, 55A spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx negligible. Truss 3-6" across x 4¼" high, ball shaped, with 12 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 4½ - 7" x 1½ - 2", oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, dull. Yellow Green Group 146A, with medium amount. Greyed Orange Group 165C indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, with stiff branches, 2½' tall x 2 - 2½' wide in 8-10 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
MY MARY: A deciduous azalea. 'Nacoochee' x R. austrinum . Cross (1977), raised, and introduced (1983) by W. George Beasley, Transplant Nursery, Lavonia, GA. Registered by Mrs. Beasley (Mary S.). Described and pictured in Wayside Gardens Catalog, 1983. Buds pinkish orange. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel shaped, 2½" across, with 5 wavy lobes, very fragrant, Yellow Group 11 A. Calyx minute, pale green. Truss 5" x 5", conical, with 25 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 1¼" x ¾", near narrowly obovate to elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, flat, near Green Group 138A, ciliate (about ½ of hairs are glandular), upper surface with a few scattered glandular hairs, under surface veins pubescent and with glandular hairs on midvein (all visible with lens). Leaves in fall rusty orange. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 4½' tall x 4' wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
MYRTLE DE FRIEL: An evergreen azalea. R. nakaharae x 'Rosebud' (Gable). Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (1982) by William O. Griswold, Griswold Nursery, Kirkland, WA. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, with 5 + 5 + 5 or less wavy lobes (hose-in-hose, with petaloid center), lobes and central "petals" informally overlapping (center of flower quite open), Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose), with light spotting 55A in dorsal lobe sector, reverse 55A; central "petals" vary in development, some with anthers attached. Maybe to 2 stamens. Calyx 1¼", colored as corolla. Inflorescence 3 flowered. Floriferous. Leaves 1¾" x 9/16", narrowly elliptic, flat, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glossy, ciliate (hairs long), moderately strigose, Green Group 146A, under surface moderately strigose along veins, rarely between (hairs are golden and best seen with lens). Plant semi-dwarf, broad, branching well with creeping branches 4" tall x 10" wide in 3 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -3°F.
PACIFIC GOLD: 'Mrs. Lammot Copeland' x unnamed late deep yellow. Cross (1969) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1982) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Orange Red Group 34B. Flowers 3" across x 2" long, openly funnel-shaped, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 12B (Aureolin), with ¼", 12D border to lobes. Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 4" tall, dome-shaped, somewhat open at top, with 8-12 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾-4" x 1¾-2", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, somewhat glossy. Green Group 137A. New growth mahogany green. Plant upright, branching well, 4' tall x 3½' wide in 12 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
PAMELA MALLAND: An evergreen azalea. 'Vuyk's Rosyred' x 'Moonbeam'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (1982) by Garda Griswold, Griswold Nursery, Kirkland, WA. Synonym: Rosy Cheeks. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel shaped (with very flat face), 3" across x 1 " long, with 5-6 large (cut deeply in corolla), wavy, overlapping lobes, Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose), 56C in throat, minor 53C (Cardinal Red) spotting on dorsal and slightly on adjacent lobe(s). Sometimes lobes are cut all the way to base; very often with a petaloid stamen in flower. Calyx negligible. Inflorescence with single flower. Free flowering. Leaves 1¼ - 1⅝" x ⅝ - ¾", narrowly obovate to nearly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 139A, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface moderately strigose particularly along veins (hairs seen with lens). Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 12" tall x 18" wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
PARTY PACKAGE: 'Lem's Cameo' x 'Ruby Bowman'. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced (1983) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds dark rose, tubular, fluted. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel shaped 3 - 4" across x 1" long, with 7 wavy, frilled lobes, Red Group 52A (Crimson) in bud fading through 52B (Carmine), 52C & D (Carmine Rose) with age, with 2 minor ½" rays of 52A spotting in dorsal lobe sector and star shaped 52A stain deep in throat, reverse colored as inside except somewhat darker. Calyx irregular, lobes ¼ - ¾", colored as corolla. Truss 7" across x 5½" tall, conical to dome shaped, with ±15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 1½ years, 5 - 6" x 2 - 3", elliptic, margin undulate, acute, cuneate, glabrous, light green. New growth bronze with maroon petioles. Plant upright, branching moderately with both stiff, upright and arching branches, 48" tall x 40" wide in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
RALPH PAPE: 'Sunset Yates' x 'Pink Punch'. Cross (1968) by Henry T. Yates. Raised and introduced (1982) by Maletta Yates, Frostburg, Md. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 60B, throat 63B (Spirea Red), with small, faint Yellow Green Group 152C spots in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx minute, 144D. Truss 7" across x 7½" high, ball-shaped, with 13 (to as many as 17) flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3¼ - 4½" x 1½ - 1¾", elliptic to near narrowly elliptic, flat, between acute and obtuse, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, dull, Green Group 139A, with negligible, golden, plastered indumentum seen only with lens. Plant broad, branching well, with arching branches, 44" tall x 72" wide in 16 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -15, -20°F.
ROSY DREAM: Selected R. yakushimanum x 'Britannia'. Cross (1969) by H. L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1980) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, 54B (Spinel Red), 54D in throat, with minor, red spotting in dorsal lobe, sector, corolla color fades as flower ages. Calyx small. Truss 5" across x 3" high, ball to dome-shaped, with 12-16 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2-3 years, 5½" x 2", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic (nearer former), acute, cuneate to slightly oblique, dull, Green Group 137A, with medium amount of silvery indumentum (when new), aging to cinnamon. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 2' tall x 3½' wide in 12 years. Blooms in early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
RUSTY KELLER: A Chinquapin Hill hybrid deciduous azalea. 'Orangeade' x R. austrinum . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Gus and Thérèse Elmer, Jr. Pass Christian, MS. Flowers widely funnel shaped, 2½" across x 2¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes (tube narrow, face quite flat, lobes reflexed; lower lobes somewhat rolled), not fragrant, Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red), with Orange Red Group 25A (Orpiment Orange) dorsal flare. Calyx ¼", green. Truss 4 - 5" x 4 - 5" flat, with 10-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3½ - 4¼" x 1¼ - 1½", oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, dull, texture rough, Yellow Green Group 147C, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface somewhat pubescent and strigose along veins (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, broad, branching well, with stiff branches, 6' tall x 3' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid to late April (In southern MS). Hardy to at least 0°F.
SIERRA SUNSET: 'Sunup-Sundown' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1979), raised, and introduced by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds strong salmon. Flowers with Red Group 52B (Carmine) edging shading to Red Group 37D (Shell Pink) in lobe centers and throat, with 2 light rays Orange Group 24C (Tangerine Orange) in dorsal lobe sector, reverse edged and striped 52A (Crimson), external stripes shade through 52B-C-D toward base, areas between stripes 38B (Azalea Pink), base 37D. Calyx leafy, ¾ to 1¼", somewhat reflexed, colored as corolla. Flowers give strong salmon color effect. Truss 5" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, somewhat flat, with 10-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2½ years, 3 - 4" x 1 - 1½", narrowly elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, deep green, with very light amount of tan indumentum seen with lens. Plant upright, compact, branching well, 2' tall x 1½' wide in 5 years. Blooms in mid April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
SILVER TRUMPETS: 'Sunup-Sundown' x a Whitney hybrid with a yellow, tubular flower with large calyx. Cross (1979), raised, and introduced by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds plum red. Flowers near campanulate but with long tube (trumpet-like), 2½" across x 3" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, plum colored at first, fading soon to white with Greyed Red Group 179A blotches deep in throat at base of each lobe and peripheral heavy, 179A spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector, reverse shaded plum, particularly along tube. Calyx leafy, very reflexed, in 3 parts, spotted as corolla, dorsal lobe 1¾" x 1¾", 2 side lobes 1¾" long x ¾" wide. Calyx and corolla also somewhat flecked on outside, fading with age. Truss 9" across x 4" high, flat, with 7-10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2½ years, 4-5" x 1⅜ - 1¾", variable, near oblanceolate, concave, acute to obtuse, both with an apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, with light amount of brownish indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, upright, branching moderately with arching branches, 20" tall x 16" wide in 5 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
SIZZLER: A deciduous azalea. R. bakeri selection collected wild on Gregory Bald, N.C., (1968) by Olin Holmsomback, Chicamauga, GA. Raised and introduced by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA and Wilmington, DE. Flowers of good substance, narrowly tubular funnel shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5 (rarely 6) wavy (dorsal is frilled), often reflexed, lobes, Red Group 40A (Dutch Vermilion) and 42B, with very insignificant dorsal blotch. Calyx ¼", pale green, hairy, with narrow lobes. Truss 5" across x 2" high, dome shaped, with 5-6 flowers. Floriferous, Leaves elliptic, sometimes narrowly elliptic or broadly elliptic, margin undulate, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, bullate (veins prominent), Green Group 137A, ciliate, rarely strigose, under surface midrib and veins pubescent and very rarely strigose. Hairs all seen with lens. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, branching moderately with stiff branches, 4' tall x 5' wide in 16 years. Blooms in late June, early July. Hardy to at least -10°F. Very difficult to propagate.
THÉRÈSE ELMER: A Chinquapin Hill hybrid deciduous azalea. 'Orangeade' x R. austrinum . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Gus and Thérèse Elmer, Jr. Pass Christian MS. Flowers widely funnel shaped, with flat face, 2½" x 2½", with 6-7 wavy lobes, quite fragrant, a bi-color: Yellow Orange Group 18A (Amber Yellow) and Orange Red Group 30B (Saturn Red), with Yellow Orange Group 23B (Cadmium Orange) flare covering most of dorsal lobe. Calyx negligible, near green. Truss 5" across x 3" tall, dome-shaped, with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3 - 3½" x 1", oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, very narrowly cuneate, dull, Yellow Green Group 147B, ciliate, sparsely strigose, under surface pubescent, particularly along veins, and midrib rarely strigose. Hairs seen with lens. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 7' tall x 3' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid to late April (in southern MS). Hardy to at least 0°F.
TOTALLY AWESOME: A deciduous azalea. A cross of 2 selected, unnamed seedlings. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced by Jack O. Bunnell, Olympia, WA. Buds Red Group 42A. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel shaped, 4" across x 2½" long, with 5-8 wavy lobes, not fragrant. Yellow Orange Groups 14C (Lemon Yellow) and 15D (Chrome Yellow), shaded with 40C edging, with Yellow Orange Group 15A (Buttercup Yellow) blotch of spotting in dorsal lobe sector, reverse Red Group 41B with Yellow Orange Groups 14C and 15D shadings. 0-7 stamens. Some flowers with irregular, "petal-like" aborted stamens; others with normal central lobes ("petals"). Dorsal central lobes with blotch of spotting. Calyx ¼", 144A. Truss 6" across x 3" high, dome shaped, with 7 flowers. Leaves 2¾ - 3¼" x ⅝ - ¾ - 15/1 6", narrower than narrowly elliptic, acute (knobbed), narrowly cuneate, concave, glossy, Green Group 137A with very slight edging of Greyed Purple Group 184A, ciliate, moderately strigose, under surface midrib moderately pubescent and moderately strigose on veins and interstices (hairs seen with lens). Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 41" tall x 43" wide in 7 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least -5°F. Fall leaves a combination of red, gold, and green.
VIENNESE WALTZ: 'Lem's Cameo' x 'Pink Petticoats'. Cross (1976), raised and introduced (1984) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds Red Group 51A (Rhodonite Red). Flowers funnel shaped, 2-3" across x 2" long, with 6-7 evenly rounded lobes, fragrant, Red Group 51D at lobe edges shading to 55D in throat, with orange brown spotting in dorsal lobe sector on ground of Orange Group 27B (Salmon), reverse 51B. Calyx negligible. Truss 9" x 9", conical, with up to 34 flowers. Flowers are so densely packed that lobe edges markedly outline flowers very attractively. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4¼ - 5½" x 2 - 2¾", elliptic, concave, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, dark green. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 4' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
