'ADANA': ( R. fortunei x R. diaprepes ) x 'Noyo Chief. Cross (1963), raised, and introduced (1980) by Dr. David W. Goheen, Camas, WA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2" long, with 7 wavy lobes, Red Group 41A (Vermillion), throat 39B (Jasper Red), with 52A (Crimson) blotch deep in throat (about ¾" across and encircling it). Calyx minute, green. Truss 6" x 6", ball-shaped, with 14-16 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 4 years, 6-7" x 2¼-2¾-3", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic to near oblanceolate, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 137A. New foliage bronze. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 5' tall x 6' wide in 12 years. Blooms in early to mid-April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'ANNE'S DELIGHT': Parents unknown. Cross by William E. Whitney, Brinnon, WA. First flowered in 1972. Raised and introduced (1982) by Anne Sather, Whitney Gardens, Brinnon, WA. Pictured in Journal, A.R.S. , 38:3(Summer), 1984, p. 114. Buds Yellow Group 7D. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 3¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 3D, with Red Group 46A markings deep in dorsal throat. Calyx ⅛", light yellow green. Truss 8" across x 7" high, ball-shaped, with 14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 3½-5¼" x 1¾-2½", near narrowly obovate to almost elliptic, margin undulate, apiculate (apiculus long), rounded, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137B. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'BRINNON BEAUTY': A Knap Hill type deciduous azalea. Parents unknown. Seed collected (1969), raised and introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Bailey, Brinnon, WA. Buds Greyed Red Group 182A. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy to frilled, re-curved lobes, not fragrant, Red Group 39A (Jasper Red), with prominent orange blotch on dorsal lobe, throat Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red), reverse Red Group 42A. Calyx ¼", light yellowish-green. Truss 6" x 6", ball-shaped, with 17 flowers. Free Flowering. Leaves 3½-4¼ x 1-1⅜", oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, revolute, acute with prominent knob, cuneate, glossy, moderately strigose, Yellow Green Group 146D, ciliate, under surface midrib pubescent and secondary veins somewhat strigose (all hairs seen with lens); leaves red in fall. Plant broad, rounded, with upright central stems, branching well, 6' x 6' in 14 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'BUTTONS AND BOWS': A Knap Hill type azalea. 'Strawberry Ice' (open pollinated). Seed collected (1969), raised, and introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Bailey, Brinnon, WA. Buds Red Group 48A. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 7 frilled lobes, fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 20B (Chinese Yellow), with ±½" Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red) to Red Group 39B (Jasper Red) edging, with blotch in dorsal lobe sector of same colors, reverse 39B. Calyx ¼", bright yellow green. Truss 5½" across x 5" tall, ball-shaped, compact, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3-5½" x 1-1½", narrower than narrowly elliptic, some almost oblanceolate, flat, acute with prominent knob, cuneate, glossy, rarely strigose, Yellow Green Group 146C, ciliate, under surface veins rarely strigose and lightly pubescent (all hairs visible with lens); leaves red in fall. New growth overcast Greyed Red Group 181. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 5' tall x 5½' wide in 14 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'CABARET': Parents unknown. Cross by William E. Whitney, Brinnon, WA. First bloomed in 1970. Raised and introduced by Anne Sather, Whitney Gardens, Brinnon, WA. Buds Red Group 52A (Crimson). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 7 wavy to frilled, somewhat reflexed lobes. Red Group 54D (Spinel Red) shaded to edging 52B (Carmine) (picotee effect), with Yellow Group 3B markings surrounding inside base of throat, and with 52B stripes from base of throat to intersections of lobes (gives star effect). Truss 6" x 6", conical, somewhat lax, with 14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4-5" x 1¾-2", near elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 137A. Plant broad, branching moderately, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'CANADIAN PINK': 'Rocket' x (selected, unnamed clone of 'Catalgla' x 'Lady Bessborough'). Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers openly funnel-shaped with lobes split to base (appear like petals), 5 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5 wavy to frilled "petals", Red Purple Group 73B, with 74B (Cyclamen Purple) spotting on dorsal "petal", throat 74B, with 74B ribs down center on reverse of each "petal". Calyx 1 mm., Yellow Green Group 144D. Truss 10 cm. across x 9 cm. high, conical, with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 9.5 - 15 cm. x 4.3 - 5.3 cm., oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, broadly acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137A, under surface with thin film of indumentum (seen with lens); fall leaves Red Group 42B. Plant upright, open, branching well, 85 cm. tall x 50 cm. wide in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -25°F.
'DOROTHY PESTE ANDERSEN': 'Vincent van Gogh' x 'Loderi King George'. Cross (1975), raised, named, and introduced by Fred Peste, Shelton, WA. Described and registered by Anne Sather, Whitney's Garden, Brinnon, WA. Buds Red Purple Group 58B (Rose Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2½" long, with 6-7 evenly rounded lobes, fragrant, Red Purple Group 65C shading to ±½" 63B (Spiraea Red) edging, with minor, dorsal Yellow Green Group 151A spotting. Calyx negligible. Truss 6¾" across x 7½" high, conical, tight, with 24 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 6½-8" x 2⅜-2¾", lanceolate, acute, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137B. Plant rounded, branching well with upright branches, 3' x 3' in 7 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'DOSEWALLIPS GOLD': A Knap Hill type deciduous azalea. 'Old Gold' selfed. Pollination (1969), raised, and introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Bailey, Brinnon, WA. Buds Red Group 48A. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy, reflexed lobes, fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 19A, with prominent orange blotch of coalescing spots in dorsal lobe sector, with ±¼" Orange Red Group 31B edging, reverse 31B. Calyx ¼", moderate yellow green. Truss 6" across x 5½" high, ball-shaped, with 12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 2½-5" x 1⅛-2⅛", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, flat, apiculate to acute with knob, cuneate, glossy, rarely strigose, Yellow Green Group 146A, ciliate, under surface moderately pubescent particularly along veins (all hairs seen with lens); leaves red in fall. New growth Red Purple Group 57A (Tyrian Purple). Plant broad, rounded, with upright central stems, branching well, 5½' tall x 6' wide in 14 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'FABULOUS': Parents unknown. Cross and raised by William E. Whitney, Brinnon, WA. First bloomed in 1964. Raised (after 1970) and introduced (1980) by Anne Sather, Whitney Gardens, Brinnon, WA. Buds Red Group 54A (Spinel Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" x 3½", with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose) at lobe edges shading to 56A toward center; some flowers may have very slight dorsal spotting. Calyx negligible. Truss 5" x 5", ball-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137B. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'GOLDEN TEAR': R. wardii x R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii . Cross (1960's) and raised by Dietrich Hobbie, Oldenburg, West Germany. First flowered in 1970. Grown (after 1975), named, and introduced by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Buds Orange Red Group 33C (Shrimp Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 6.5 cm. across x 3.5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 1D (Chartreuse Green), fine rays in throat and spots in dorsal lobe sector, both Red Group 47A (Currant Red), reverse 1C. Calyx 3 mm., Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 13 cm. across x 10 cm. high, conical, with 13-15 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 7-8 cm. x 4-4.3 cm., elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with light, reticulate (web-like), golden indumentum (visible with lens). Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 55 cm. tall x 38 cm. wide in 9 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -15°F.
'JONATHAN': A Chinquapin Hill hybrid deciduous azalea. 'Orangeade' x R. austrinum . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Gus and Therese Elmer, Jr., Pass Christian, MS. Buds Orange Red Group 31A (Burnt Orange). Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped with flat face, 2¼" across x 2½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes (some lobes may be reflexed), quite fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 23B with 23A (both Cadmium Orange) flare in dorsal lobe sector, reverse Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red). Calyx minute, light green. Truss 4-5" x 4-5", ball-shaped, with 12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3½-4" x 1-1¼", oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, flat, dull, Yellow Green Group 147B, ciliate, upper surface moderately strigose, under surface veins pubescent, midrib moderately strigose, rest of blade slightly strigose (all visible with lens). Plant upright, branching moderately, with stiff branches, 7' tall x 3' wide in 15 years. Blooms mid- to late April (in southern MS). Hardy to at least 0°F.
'KAYLA RAE': 'Fawn' x 'Crest'. Cross (1968) by Carl Phetteplace, M.D., Leaburg, OR. A.R.S. Seed Exchange #69-382. Raised and introduced by Audrey Holmeide, Aberdeen, WA. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 4" across x 3" long, with 7 wavy to frilled, reflexed lobes, Crimson 22/2 (H.C.C.), with minor blotch, Cardinal Red 822-deep in throat at base of filaments, reverse Crimson 22/1. Calyx minute, Crimson 22/2. Truss 7" high x 7¾" across, ball-shaped, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½-6¾" x 2¼-2⅝", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, broadly acute, slightly auriculate and oblique, glabrous, dull, near Spinach Green o960/1. Plant rounded, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 4' tall x 5' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'LABRADOR': 'Catawbiense Album' x R. yakushimanum 'Mist Maiden' Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (1984) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers, openly funnel-shaped, 5 cm. across x 2.5 cm. long with 1-4 mm. Red Purple Group 68D (Rhodamine Purple) edging shading to white in center, with Yellow Group 6B (Sulphur Yellow) minor spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx 2 mm. Yellow Green Group 145C. Truss 12 cm. across x 8 cm. high, flat, with 24 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 12-15 cm. x 2.5-4 cm., narrower than narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with light, easily rubbed off, almost colorless indumentum. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 140 cm. tall x 100 cm. wide in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25°F.
'NORMAN BEHRING: 'Nova Zembla' x R. yakushimanum 'Pink Parasol'. Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1983) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 5.5 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 73C with 1 mm. 73B edging and Yellow Green Group 1B spotting in dorsal lobe sector, reverse with 73B ribs down center of lobes; colors fade very little with age. Calyx 1 mm.. Yellow Green Group 145C. Truss 13 cm. across x 11 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 18 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 8-11.5 cm. x 3-3.7 cm., narrowly elliptic, almost obtuse, cuneate to near rounded, flat, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with medium, easily rubbed off, Greyed Orange Group 165B indumentum. Plant broad, branching well, 30 cm. tall x 50 cm. wide in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -25°F.
'PAL0MA': 'Ruby Bowman' x R. floccigerum . Cross (1966), raised, and registered by Dr. David W. Goheen, Camas, WA. Introduced (1983) by Dr. Lansing Bulgin, Sherwood, OR. Flowers of good substance, openly campanulate, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Group 49B (Venetian Pink) with ¾", picotee, 49A (Dawn Pink) edging, throat 49D (French Rose), with Red Group 45A (Guardsman Red) spotting in middle of dorsal 3 lobes, and 5, 45A, ¼", nectaries at base of corolla below each lobe. Upper ½ of pistil showy, bright red. Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 14-16 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 3¾-5½" x 1¼-2", narrowly elliptic, concave (boat-shaped), apiculate, cuneate, glossy, bullate, Green Group 137A. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately, with willowy branches, 10' tall x 6' wide in 17 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'PETER BEHRING': 'Nova Zembla' x R. yakushimanum 'Mist Maiden'. Cross (1972), raised and introduced (1982) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 4.5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 57D (Tyrian Purple) with Yellow Green Group 153A spotting in dorsal lobe sector and 58B (Rose Red) ribs down center of lobes on reverse; colors fade very little with age. Calyx 1 mm.. Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 16 cm. across x 12 cm. high, conical, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 8-9.5 cm. x 3.3-4 cm., elliptic to narrowly elliptic or somewhat oblanceolate, more or less concave, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Green Group 137B, under surface with light, continuous to somewhat patchy golden brown to grey brown indumentum. Plant upright, branching well, 85 cm. tall x 80 cm.wide in 12 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -25°F.
'PINK PRELUDE': ('Sarita Loder' x R. calophytum , a Lem hybrid) x R. macabeanum . Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982, limited) by Elsie Watson, Kirkland, WA. Buds Red Purple Group 62A (Rhodamine Pink). Flowers of good substance, oblique-campanulate, 2¼" x 2¼", with 6 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 65D, with age fading to 62D, with Greyed Purple Group 187A blotch encircling base of corolla within throat, ±¾" dorsally to ±⅜" below, dorsal blotch with Red Purple Group 59A spotting at edge. Calyx 1/16", white tomentose. Truss 6" across x 4" high, near ball-shaped to somewhat flat, with 21 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 10" x 3", narrowly elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, glabrous at maturity, glossy, Green Group 137A with prominent Yellow Green Group 145 mid-vein, under surface with light, easily rubbed off indumentum, Greyed Green Group 194C (doesn't darken with age). New growth with thin Orange White Group 159A tomentum. Plant broad, rounded, open, branching well, 8' x 8' in 14 years. Blooms in early March. Hardy to at least 9°F. Registrant finds that plant roots easily and cutting-grown plants bloom when very young.
'SHORTOFF': A dwarf form of R. maximum , c.w. on Shortoff Mountain, NC, in 1940 by Henry Wright, Highlands, NC. Grown by Wright (now deceased). Described, registered, and introduced by L. Clarence Towe, Walhalla, SC. Plant in the wild was an isolated occurrence. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 1¼" across x 1" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, white with negligible yellow green spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ⅛", white. Truss 3" across x 4" high, somewhat conical, with 18-20 flowers. Leaves held to 4 years, 2½-4" x 1⅜-2", elliptic, acute with apiculus, rounded, convex grossly glabrous when mature, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A, with light, plastered, easily rubbed off tan indumentum, near Greyed Orange Group 167C. New growth tan tomentose. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 3' tall x 2' wide in 10 years (approximately 40% of size of representative species); original collected plant now, after 44 years, ±8' tall x ±6' wide. Blooms in late July (later than typical R. maximum ). Hardy to at least -20°F.
'SIERRA TREASURE': 'Crest' x R. lacteum . Cross (1967) and registered by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Raised by Dr. Robert C. Rhodes, Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada. Introduced (1982) by Lofthouse and Rhodes. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4-4.5" across x 2" long, with 5-6 wavy, reflexed, lobes, Yellow Group 3D, with 3 maroon blotches in throat and peripheral spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx negligible. Truss 8" across x 6" high, conical, with ± 13 flowers. Leaves held 1½ years, 5" x 3", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic to between oblong and narrowly oblong, concave, mucronate, between auriculate and cordate, glabrous, dark green, with very slight tan indumentum seen with lens. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, 6' x 6' in 17 years. Bloom in mid-April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'TOP BANANA': Parents unknown (possibly a 'Hotei' hybrid). Cross by William E. Whitney, Brinnon, WA. Raised and introduced (1984) by Anne Sather, Whitney Gardens, Brinnon, WA. First flowered in 1977. Pictured in Journal A.R.S. , 38:3 (Summer), 1984, p. 115. Buds Orange Red Group 35A (Brick Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, with 6 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, Yellow Group 11A with no markings. Calyx to 1⅛", colored as corolla. Truss 5" x 5", ball-shaped, with 17 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 3-4¼" x 1⅞-2", elliptic, flat to somewhat convex, apiculate, rounded to somewhat cordate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137A. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, 3½' tall x 2' wide in 10 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 5°F. See Journal, A.R.S. , reference above for critical comparison with 'Hotei'.
'VERONIKA PEIFFER': 'Nova Zembla' x (selected, unnamed clone of 'Catalgla' x 'Lady Bessborough'). Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1984) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 5 cm. x 5 cm., with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, Red Purple Group 74D, with no markings, outside of lobes with 74C ribs down center. Calyx 1 mm., Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 13 cm. across x 10 cm. tall, dome-shaped, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 8.5-10 cm. x 4-5 cm., elliptic, widely acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137A, under surface with a thin film of an indumentum visible only with lens. Plant dwarf, branching well, 30 cm. x 30 cm. in 10 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25°F.
'VISTOSO': ( R. fortunei x R. diaprepes ) Mary Cowan x 'Avalanche'. Cross (1962), raised, and registered by Dr. David W. Goheen, Camas, WA. Introduced by Dr. Lansing Bulgin, Sherwood, OR. Flowers of good substance open-funnel-campanulate, 5½" across x 2½" long, with 7 wavy lobes (dorsal are reflexed), fragrant, Red Group 50D (Empire Rose), ½" tip of lobes flushed 50C (Claret Rose), with 50A (Claret Rose) spotting in dorsal throat. Calyx minute, green with red rim. Truss 10" across x 8" high, dome-shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 6-7½" x 2¼-2½", narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Green Group 137B. Plant upright, branching moderately, 10' tall x 5'wide in 20 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'WHITNEY PURPLE': Parents unknown. Cross and raised by William E. Whitney, Brinnon, WA. Probably first bloomed in the late 1960's. Raised (after 1970) and introduced (1975) (perhaps before by Whitney) by Anne Sather, Whitney Gardens, Brinnon, WA. Pictured in Journal, A.R.S. 38:3 (Summer) 1984, p. 114. Buds Red Purple Group 59A (Ruby Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" x 3", with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 72A with prominent dorsal blotch (flare), Black Group 202A, Corolla color does not fade appreciably with age. Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball to dome-shaped, with 21 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4-5¾" x 1⅝-2⅛", between elliptic and narrowly elliptic to between somewhat oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy. Green Group 137A. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
