JARS v39n4 - 1986 ARS Convention

1986 ARS Convention
Carolyn Lewis, Ann Arbor, Michigan

The Great Lakes Chapter is putting the finishing touches on the 1986 National American Rhododendron Society Meeting, May 21-25, 1986. The theme, "Rhododendrons - The Adaptability Connection," will be developed by outstanding speakers from throughout the world. Early commitments have been received from Dr. Peter Ashton, Director of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University; John S. Basford, Curator of the world class rhododendron collection at Broderick Castle, Isle of Arran, Scotland; Richard Murcott, collector and specialist in hybrids produced by Dexter, Phipps and other Long Island Breeders; Dr. Jon Valigorsky, hobbyist, a frequent visitor to rhododendron nurseries and hybridizers in northern Germany; Barry Yinger, Curator of the Oriental Plant Collection, National Arboretum, Washington, D.C.

The redecorated plush elegance of the Holiday Inn, Rockside, strategically located between downtown Cleveland and Hopkins International Airport will provide the setting for activities including a unique craft sale. Susy Ring has been planning this event for three years assembling items made of or featuring rhododendrons and azaleas from clocks to aprons. A crystal and gold rhododendron truss by La Melodie will be raffled off. Several artists will be on site to adapt their work to your special requirements.

The plant sale will offer hundreds of plants not readily obtainable including many from Canada. Full and half day tours will visit many places of interest including the home of David G. Leach and the Holden Arboretum. A museum tour is scheduled for those who wish a brief res-pite from rhododendrons. The Breeders' Roundtable theme will be flower pigments. Dr. J. Heursel from Belgium and Dr. R.J. Griesbach from Maryland have already indicated that they will speak.

Please join us for an unforgettable convention.
