'ABEILLE': ( R. keleticum x R. dauricum ) open pollinated. ( R. dauricum used was deciduous form c.w. NW of Lake Baikal, Siberia, by Vladimir Vasak.) Seed collected (1978), grown, and plant introduced by Joseph B. Brueckner, M.D., Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 1⅜" across x ⅝" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, vivid reddish purple to strong reddish purple 78A-B (Imperial Purple), dorsal lobe with diffuse red spotting. Stigma red. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 2¼" across x 1¼" high, lax, 3- to 5-flowered. Very free flowering. Leaves held 1¾ years, 1" x ⅜", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, glossy, scaly, moderate yellow green 137C, under surface with tiny brown scales. Plant rounded, dwarf, branching well, leafy, 20" tall x 27" wide in 7 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -22°F (probably lower).
'ALCLARA': An evergreen azalea. 'Snowclad' x 'Coccinea'. Cross (1963) and raised by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, L. I., NY. Named, registered, and introduced by John Scarbeck, Oakdale, NY. Buds strong red 45D (Blood Red). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, vivid purplish red 57D, with heavy strong purplish red 58B (Rose Red) spotting covering dorsal lobe sector and somewhat on adjacent lobes. Calyx ¼", light yellowish green 135D. Flower cluster 4" x 4", dome-shaped, with 2-3 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held well in winter, 1½" x 1", broadly elliptic to obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, moderately strigose, ciliate, moderate olive green 137A, under surface somewhat more strigose than upper surface. (Hairs seen with lens.). Plant rounded, branching well, 2½' tall x 4' wide in 21 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
'ANDREW EDDY': 'Cantanea' x 'The Hon. Jean Marie de Montague'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1980) by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, L. I., NY. Buds deep red 53A (Cardinal Red). Flowers of good substance openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, strong purplish red 67A (Fuchsia Purple), with light spotting of same color in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx minute light yellow green 145D. Truss 6" across x 5" tall, conical to ball-shaped, with 10 flowers. Leaves held to 5 years, 5½" x 2", narrowly elliptic, flat to slightly convex, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, dull, moderate olive green 137B. Plant upright growing, yet broad and rounded, branching well, 4½' tall x 4' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'ANITA DUSTAN': 'Crest' x 'Hotei'. Cross (1970), raised, and named by Walter Hill, Poulsbo, WA. Described, registered, and introduced by Bruce Briggs, Olympia, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1¼" long, with 5-6 wavy lobes, brilliant yellow 10A (Barium Yellow), lobe tips with touch of orange red. Calyx ¾-⅞", light yellow 10B. Truss 3½" across x 1¼", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, somewhat convex, outer portion (toward tip) may be down-turned, glabrous, moderate olive green 146A. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 1½' x 1½' in 5 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'ARTHUR HORSLEY': 'White Swan' x 'Nestucca'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Donald A. Horsley, Bremerton, WA. Buds strong purplish pink 55B (Neyron Rose). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1¼" long, with 6 wavy lobes, yellowish white 155D with 2 small, brilliant yellow green 150C (Sap Green) finger-shaped blotches in throat of dorsal lobe sector and with a few spots of same color above each blotch. Calyx ⅛", moderate purplish red 184C. Truss 6" x 6", dome-shaped, with 13-17 flowers. Leaves held 2+ years, 4-4½" x 1⅝-1⅞", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, flat, widely acute, cuneate to slightly oblique, glabrous, dull, moderate olive green 137A, under surface with short, scattered, tan hairs seen with lens. Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 3' tall x 2½' wide in 8 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'BARBARA BEHRING': 'Sappho' x ('Catalgla' x 'Sappho'). Cross (c.1979), raised, and introduced (1985) by Rudy Behring, St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Buds light purple 84C (Amethyst Violet). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, white with prominent dorsal lobe dark purple 79B (with some strong purplish red 72A) blotch and spotting, reverse light purple 84C (Amethyst Violet) with deep purple 79C spotting on outside of corolla behind dorsal blotch. Anthers ivory. Calyx 1 mm., light yellow green 145C. Truss 13 cm. across x 10 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 13 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 8 cm. x 3 cm., near narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, glabrous, moderate olive green, leathery. Plant dwarf, 30 cm. x 30 cm. in 6 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25°F. Cultivar is very similar to 'Sappho' except that it is a dwarf and has ivory anthers.
'BIG YAK': A form of R. yakushimanum from A.R.S. Seed Exchange #66-193, hand self pollinated (1965) seed of the Exbury form of the species by Ben Nelson, Suquamish, WA. Raised, selected, and introduced (1984) by Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill, Vineyard Haven, MA. Buds deep purplish pink 68A. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 4½ cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, strong to moderate purplish pink 68B-C (Roseine Purple) fading to white, with moderate reddish brown 166B blotch of spotting in dorsal lobe sector, with deep purplish pink 68A (Roseine Purple) stripes down centers of lobes toward base of throat (dorsal 3 darker), reverse white flushed moderate purplish pink 65A (Amaranth Rose). Calyx 2 mm. greenish white. Truss 12 cm. across x 9 cm. tall, dome-shaped, with 10-21 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3+ years, 14 cm. x 5 cm., narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, dull moderate olive green 147A, under surface of mature leaves with light, plastered, brownish orange 166C indumentum. New growth white tomentose. Plant upright, broad, rounded, dome-shaped, branching well, 8' tall x 10' wide in 19 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F. Selection distinguished by large, massive plant clothed with trusses top to bottom.
'BILLY STIELER': 'Witch Doctor' x 'Captain Jack'. Cross 1969, named, registered, and introduced by Paul Holden, Harstine Island Nursery, Shelton, WA. Raised by Mrs. A.J. Holden. Described by Mrs. Carol Graf. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" x 1½" long, with 5 frilled lobes, vivid red 46B, edging ⅓", strong red 46A (Currant Red), with deep red 60A spotting in areas where lobes intersect. Calyx 1½", colored and spotted as corolla. Truss 5" across x 4½" high, flat, with 10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 6" x 2½", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, margins undulate, narrowly acute with long apiculus, rounded to somewhat cordate, dull, moderate olive green 147A, under surface with light to medium amount, moderate orange 167A indumentum. Plant upright, yet broad, branching well, 3½' tall x 4' wide in 15 years. Bloom in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'FLEURETTE EVANS': 'Seta' selfed. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (±1980), by William Moyles, Oakland, CA. Buds deep to strong pink 50B-C (Claret Rose). Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, pale purplish pink 56A (Neyron Rose), with throat deep to strong pink 50B-C. Calyx light yellow green 145C. Truss 4" across x 3" tall, lax, with 3 (sometimes 4) flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 6 cm. x 2 cm., lanceolate, apiculate, rounded, grossly glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green to moderate yellow green 147A-B, under surface with moderately spaced, medium size, dark red scales. Plant broad, branching well, 2½' tall x 3½' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-March. Hardiness untested.
'GOLDEN LIGHTS': A deciduous azalea. ( R. atlanticum x unknown) MLA # 570091A x red Exbury MLA # 600267H. Cross made at (1975), raised and introduced (1985) by University of Minnesota, Landscape Arboretum, Chanhassen, MN. Named by Harold Pellett and Susan Moe. Registered by Dr. Pellett. Described by Laurie Mainquist. (All at U. of M. Landscape Arboretum.) Buds strong reddish orange 31B (Burnt Orange). Flowers tubular funnel-shaped 7 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 lobes (dorsal frilled, lower wavy), very fragrant, light orange yellow 16C (Buttercup Yellow) suffused with 31B, throat 31B, strong orange yellow 17A blotch in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx 4 mm., moderate yellow green 138B. Truss 11 cm. across x 6 cm. high, flat, with 10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 9 cm. x 3.5 cm., between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, flat, acute (knobbed), narrowly cuneate, moderate olive green 147A, strigose (widely scattered hairs), ciliate, under surface strigose (rarely along veins) and somewhat pubescent (particularly along midrib) (all hairs seen with lens). Plant rounded, branching moderately, 1.3 m. tall x 1 m. wide in 6 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -31 °F.
'JIMMY COME LATELY': An Exbury type deciduous azalea of unknown parents. Cross (1969) and raised by H.L Bailey, Brinnon, WA. Introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Bailey. Buds vivid red 45A. Flowers of good substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2½" long, with 5 wavy and frilled lobes, very fragrant, vivid reddish orange 33A (Capsicum Red), whole dorsal lobe strong reddish orange 31A (Burnt orange). Stigma green. Calyx ⅜", strong yellow green 145A. Truss 6" across x 4" tall, dome-shaped, with 9-11 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 2¾" x 1-1¼", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, acute (knobbed), moderately short strigose, ciliate, moderate olive green 147A, under surface rarely strigose (particularly along veins). (Hairs seen with lens). Fall leaves deep red 53A (Cardinal Red). Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 4' tall x 5' wide in 15 years. Blooms in late June. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'PARKER'S TRIUMPH': 'C.I.S.' x 'Clara Raustein'. Cross (1972) by E.K. Parker (A.R.S. Seed Exchange # 73-357). Raised, registered, and introduced (1981) by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook L. I., NY. Buds strong reddish orange. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2" long with 5 wavy lobes, light orange yellow 16C (Buttercup Yellow). Calyx ½", colored as corolla. Truss 6" across x 3" high, conical to dome-shaped, open, with 10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 4 years or more, 4-4½" x 1½-1¾", between narrowly elliptic and elliptic to between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, grossly glabrous (initially somewhat tomentose), glossy, moderate yellow green 137C, under surface with light, plastered, greenish yellow indumentum. Plant rounded, branching well, 3½' x 3½' in 12 years. Bloom in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'PINK ROCKET': 'Rocket' x R. yakushimanum 'Pink Parasol'. Cross (1974), raised, and introduced by Rudy Behring, St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, with 0, 2, or 4 petal-like modified stamens, strong purplish pink 67D, throat light purplish pink 73C, vivid purplish red 67B (Fuchsia Purple) spotting in dorsal lobe sector, reverse with deep purplish pink 67C ribs down centers of lobes toward base. Calyx 2 mm., pale greenish yellow 2D. Truss 14.5 cm. across x 13.5 cm. tall, conical, with 13 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 11 cm. x 3.5 cm., narrowly elliptic, convex, widely acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull at first to glossy at maturity, moderate olive green 146A, under surface with light, plastered, pale greenish yellow 160C indumentum. Plant broad, dwarf, branching well with arching branches, 25 cm. tall x 50 cm. wide in 13 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -25°F. Cultivar is like 'Rocket' except flower color is of a different shade and plant habit is dwarf with tight growth.
'SIBYLLE GARRETT': 'Purple Splendour' x { R. fortunei x ( R. wardii x R. dichroanthum )}. Pollen parent is a Donald Hardgrove hybrid growing in the Planting Fields Arboretum, L. I., NY as H 58-6. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, L .I., NY. Buds strong purplish red 72A. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, light purple 80C, with prominent dorsal, 1¼" x 1", dark purple 79A (Plum Purple) blotch, reverse strong purple 80B. Calyx ⅛", light yellow green 145D. Truss 6" across x 4" tall, conical to dome-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held to 3 years. 5" x 2¼", near elliptic, flat with undulate margins, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green 137A, of heavy texture, under surface with punctate, dark brown, moderately spaced, tiny appendages (seen with lens). Plant upright growing, yet broad, branching moderately, 3½' x 3½' in 16 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'VINEBELLE': 'Robert Allison' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1962) and raised by Roy Forster at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2E0. Named, registered, and introduced (1978) at the H.R.I.O. Described by A.W. Smith. Buds moderate purplish pink 68C (Roseine Purple), fading as they open. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 6 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, white, with some olive green spotting in dorsal throat. Calyx 2 mm., green. Truss 15 cm. across x 11 cm. high, ball to dome shaped, somewhat open and lax at top, with 12-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 13 cm. x 4 cm., narrowly elliptic, flat to concave, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, dark green, under surface with very light, plastered, tan indumentum (seen with lens). Plant upright, yet broad, 2 m. x 2 m. in 22 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -12°F.
'VINECREST': {('LaBar's White' x R. fortunei ) x R. wardii (R. croceum)} x R. litiense . Cross(1972) and raised by Ken Begg at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2E0. Named, registered, and introduced (1980) at the H.R.I.O. Described by A.W. Smith. Buds peach colored. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 6 wavy lobes, somewhat fragrant, light greenish yellow 1C (Chartreuse Green), with small, red brown rays deep in dorsal throat. Stigma prominently red brown. Calyx 1 mm., green. Truss 13 cm. across x 10 cm. tall, ball- to dome-shaped, with 12 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 14 cm. x 5 cm., near narrowly elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, moderate olive green 146A. Plant upright yet broad, 1 m. x 1 m. in 13 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -16°F.
'VINEDALE': 'Scandinavia' x ('Catalgla' x R. fortunei ). Cross (1960) and raised by Roy Forster at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2E0. Named, registered, and introduced (1980) at the H.R.I.O. Described by A. W. Smith. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 8.5 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 6 wavy lobes, fragrant, light purplish pink 73C with light yellow 162C spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx 2 mm., green. Truss 16 cm. across x 10 cm. tall, dome-shaped, somewhat lax, with 13 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years 13.5 cm. x 5.5 cm., between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green. New growth tends to hide flowers somewhat. Plant upright, yet broad, 2 m. tall x 1.3 m. wide in 25 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -16°F.
'VINEMOUNT': [{('Hassan' x ( R. dichroanthum ssp. scyphocalyx x R. kyawii )} x 'Catalgla'] x 'La Bar's White'. Cross (1966) and raised by Roy Forster at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2 EO. Named, registered, and introduced (1980) at the H.R.I.O. Described by A.W. Smith. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 3.5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, somewhat fragrant, vivid reddish purple 74B (Cyclamen Purple) with pale yellow 161C blotch in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx 2 mm., green. Truss 14 cm. across x 10 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 13 cm. x 5 cm. between elliptic and narrowly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, medium green. Plant upright, yet broad, 1.2 m. tall x 1 m. across in 18 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -16°F.

Named, registered, and introduced (1975) at the H.R.I.O. Described by A.W. Smith. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, deep red 53A (Cardinal Red). Calyx 2 mm., pink. Truss 13 cm. across x 11 cm. tall, conical, with 20 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 13.5 cm. x 4 cm., narrowly elliptic, flat, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, medium green. Plant upright, yet broad, branching moderately, 1.2 m. tall x 1 m. wide in 22 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -16°F.
'WINTER LIGHTS': 'Bric-a-brac' x R. scopulorum . Cross (1971), raised, and introduced (±1980) by William Moyles, Oakland, CA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5 uneven to wavy lobes, not fragrant, white, with vivid yellow 14B blotch in dorsal throat. Calyx ⅜", green. Truss 5½" across x 3" tall, lax, with 3 flowers (15% of trusses 4-flowered). Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5 cm. x 2 cm., narrowly elliptic to elliptic, revolute, apiculate, cuneate, grossly glabrous, glossy, deep green, under surface with medium size, dark red scales. Plant upright, open, tending toward stiff branches, 5'+ tall x 3'+ wide in 11 years. Blooms mid- to late February. Hardy to at least 15°F.
'WISP': R. williamsianum x R. irroratum 'Spatter Paint'. Cross (1971) and seedlings raised by Robert Landregan, Portland, OR. Seedling grown on by Betty Sheedy, Portland, OR. Plant then raised, registered, and introduced (1984) by Thurston Skei, Florence, OR. Buds strong purplish red 71 D. Flowers openly campanulate, 3" across x 2¾" long, with 6-7 wavy lobes, moderate purplish pink 65D (Amaranth Rose), lighter toward center, with strong purplish red 71B spotting on all lobes. Calyx reddish, 1/32 -1/16". Truss 5" across x 3" high, flat, with 5-7 flowers. Fairly floriferous. Leaves held 2-3 years, 3" x 1½", near ovate, convex, obtuse, rounded, glabrous, deep green. Plant rounded, branching well, 5' tall x 6' wide in 11 years. Blooms mid-February to late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
