'ALMA PESTE PAUL': R. yakushimanum x 'Doncaster'. Cross (1979) by Fred Peste. Raised by Fred and Lillian Peste. Named and introduced by Lillian Peste, Shelton, WA. Described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, Shelton, WA. Buds vivid purplish red 57D. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, pale purplish pink 56C with ¼" strong purplish pink 62A (Rhodamine Pink) edging (inside and outside), with moderate red 179B spotting in dorsal lobe sector, and with 62A stripes (rays) down outside of each lobe. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" across x 4½" high, dome-shaped, with 23 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4¼ - 5½" x 1⅜ -1¾", oblanceolate, concave, heavy texture, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, moderate olive green 147A, with medium, red-brown indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, upright with stiff branches, branching well, 17" tall x 22" wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'ALPINE SNOW': ( R. lindleyi x R. dalhousiae ) x R. taggianum . Cross (c. 1969) by Charles W. Richards. Raised by Donald Spini, registered and introduced (1978-9, limited) by Eleanor Philp. All from Fort Bragg, CA. Buds 145B light yellow green to 10C light yellow (Barium Yellow). Flowers open funnel-campanulate, 12 cm. across x 10 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, very fragrant, 155D yellowish white with 1.5 cm., 173B moderate reddish orange (new flower) aging to 13B brilliant yellow (Lemon Yellow) stain around base of throat within. Calyx 2.5 cm., 145B light yellow green. Truss 10" across x 5½ tall, lax, with 7-11 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 13 cm. x 5 cm., narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, bullate, 137B moderate olive green, under surface with brown scales. Plant upright, branching well with arching branches, 7' tall x 4½' wide in approximately 12 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 22°F.
'BARRY RODGERS': R. yakushimanum x 'Pink Petticoats'. Cross (1979) by Fred Peste. Raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, Shelton, WA. Named and introduced by Lillian Peste. Described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, Shelton, WA. Buds 63A strong purplish red (Spiraea Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, with 5 very frilled lobes, 62D pale purplish pink with ⅜", 62A strong purplish pink (Rhodamine Pink) edging and faint 20A brilliant yellow dorsal lobe spotting; reverse 62A strong purplish pink (Rhodamine Pink). Calyx negligible. Floriferous. Truss 5½" across x 4¾" high, dome-shaped, with 24 flowers. Leaves held 1 year, 3¾-5" x 1¼-1⅝", narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, convex, apiculate, cuneate, 147A moderate olive green, heavy texture, glabrous, with 167B moderate orange indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, upright, branching well with stiff branches, 20" tall x 26" wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'CATHERINE OLSON': 'Vulcan' x 'Azor'. Cross (1961), raised, and introduced by Mrs. Sigrid Laxdall, Bellingham, WA. Buds 50A strong red (Claret Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 6 wavy lobes, with wide 50A edging, shading to 50B deep pink (Claret Rose) in lobes' centers and to 50D light pink (Empire Rose) in throat, no spotting, reverse with 50A stripes down center of each lobe. Calyx 1/16", green. Truss 5½" across x 6" tall, somewhat open to lax, with 9-10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾-5¼" x 1¼-1½", narrowly elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, dull, 147A moderate olive green, with very light, plastered, easily rubbed off, beige indumentum (seen with lens). New growth light copper-colored. Plant rounded, branching well, 46" tall x 60" across in 23 years. Blooms in late July. Hardy to at least 10°F.
'CHOICE CREAM': A deciduous azalea. R. austrinum x R. atlanticum . Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Buds 22B light orange yellow (Orange Buff) with a touch of pink. Flower narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, quite fragrant, opens 10B light yellow (Barium Yellow), fades to 11C pale yellow (Empire Yellow) as flower matures, dorsal lobe with 13A vivid yellow (Lemon Yellow) blotch, outside of tube 45D strong red (Blood Red). Stamens and pistil exserted. Calyx ⅛", yellowish green. Truss 5" across x 2" high, conical, with 12-20 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 1¾-3½" x ⅝-1", near oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, cuneate, flat, ciliate, rarely strigose, under surface pubescent particularly along veins, hairs colorless and seen with lens. Leaves yellowish in fall. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, partially stoloniferous with numerous basal stems, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to -10°F.
'DARLENE ELLISON': 'Purple Lace' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1976) by Fred Peste. Raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, Shelton, WA. Named and introduced by Lillian Peste. Described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, Shelton, WA. Buds 61C vivid purplish red (Tyrian Purple). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, with 5 frilled lobes, 62D pale purplish pink with 152C dark greenish yellow spotting in dorsal lobe sector and 68C moderate purplish pink (Roseine Purple) stripes (rays) down outside on all lobes. Calyx negligible. Truss 5½" across x 4½" tall, dome-shaped, with 17 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4-4½" x 1½-1⅝", near narrowly elliptic, convex, heavy texture, acute, cuneate, glabrous, 147A moderate olive green, with tan, plastered, light indumentum. Most leaves are twisted. Plant semi-dwarf, upright, branching well with stiff branches, 21" tall x 33" across in 9 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'DOSIDO': 'Mrs. Furnival' x Unimak [an unregistered Lem hybrid: ( R. lacteum x 'Mary Swaythling') x 'Loderi King George']. Cross (1973), raised, and introduced (1981) by James A. Elliott, Astoria, OR. Buds Phlox Pink 625/1 (H.C.C.). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, opening 625/3, fades to white with age, with Barium Yellow 503 (10D pale greenish yellow) spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx small, pink. Truss 7" across x 5½" tall, dome-shaped, with 12-15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½" x 2¼", oblong to narrowly obovate, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, glossy, Spinach Green 0960. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 10°F.
'ENTICEMENT': 'Sunup-Sundown' x 'em's Cameo'. Cross (1979), raised, and introduced (1984) by John C. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds 52A vivid red (Crimson). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, 56C pale purplish pink to 52B deep pink (Carmine) ¼" from lobe edge, with 3, ¼" wide, rays of spotting orange/ brown in throat of dorsal lobe sector, reverse 52A. Calyx ½-1", ivory flushed and streaked rose. Truss 8" across x 5" tall, lax, with 9-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5-6" x 2 - 2½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, convex, acute with apiculus, rounded, glabrous, glossy, dark green. Plant upright with stiff branches, yet broad, branches moderately to well, 34" tall x 36" across in 6 years. Blooms in early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'FORT BRAGG GLOW': 'Ruby Bowman' x R. elliottii . Cross (before 1966) and raised as a seedling by John Druecker, Fort Bragg, CA. Raised later and introduced by Eleanor Philp, Fort Bragg, CA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 5" across x 2" long, with 6 wavy lobes, 58C strong purplish red to 59A dark red (Ruby Red) deep in throat, with slight 59A spotting on all lobes (heaviest on dorsal lobes). Calyx ¼", 59A. Truss 8" across x 7" tall, ball-shaped (somewhat flat), with 11-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 6" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, 146A moderate olive green. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 7' tall x 9' wide in 15 years. Blooms in late April to early May. Hardy to at least 17°F.
'FRED PESTE': ( R. yakushimanum x 'Corona') x R. haematodes . Cross (1971) by Fred Peste. Raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, Shelton, WA. Named and introduced by Lillian Peste. Described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, Shelton, WA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2⅛" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, 53B strong red (Cardinal Red), base of throat (¼") 187B dark red, with 187A dark red spotting inside corolla (particularly on dorsal lobe). Flower color does not fade with age. Calyx negligible. Truss 5½" across x 3½" tall, flat, with 14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 3-3¾" x 1-1¼", narrowly elliptic, convex, very heavy texture (leathery), acute (knobbed), cuneate, glossy, much darker than (no color match in chart) 147A moderate olive green, with heavy 164B moderate orange yellow indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, upright with stiff branches, branching well, 2½' tall x 3' wide in 14 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'GALLE'S CHOICE': A deciduous azalea. R. calendulaceum x R. alabamense . Cross (1962), raised, and introduced by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Photograph in Azaleas , Galle, 1985. Flowers of good substance, narrowly tubular funnel-shaped to widely funnel-shaped with narrow tube, 1¾" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy, reflexed lobes, quite fragrant, 11B light yellow (Naples Yellow) with white throat and pink on lobe tips, with 16A vivid yellow (Chinese Yellow) dorsal blotch, reverse white. Stamens and pistil exserted. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 6" across x 2" tall, conical, with 4-7 flowers. Leaves 3⅜-3¾" x 1⅜-1⅝", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate (nearest former), flat, apiculate, cuneate, 143B strong yellow green (Scheele's Green), ciliate, rarely setose, under surface pubescent, rarely setose (especially along veins), colorless hairs seen with lens. Leaves yellowish in fall. Plant rounded, branching moderately, open, 10' x 10' in 15 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'GOTTFREID PESTE': R. yakushimanum x 'Rodeo'. Cross (1979) by Fred Peste. Raised by Lillian and Fred Peste, Shelton, WA. Named and introduced by Lillian Peste. Described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston. Buds 58B strong purplish red (Rose Red). Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¾" across x 2¼" long, with 5 frilled lobes, 56C pale purplish pink, with ¼", 55A deep purplish pink (Neyron Rose) edging, with very heavy 60A deep red spotting in dorsal lobe sector; reverse 55A. Calyx negligible. Truss 5¾" across x 4¾" tall, dome-shaped with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4 - 5½" x 1¼ - 1½", narrowly elliptic, convex, heavy texture, acute, cuneate, dull, 147A moderate olive green, with light to medium, plastered, 19D (grayed) pale orange yellow indumentum. Plant upright, semi-dwarf, branching well with stiff branches, 27" tall x 32" across in 6 years. Blooms early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'KATY'S PLUM': A deciduous azalea. A Knap Hill (possibly 'Gibraltar') x R. flammeum ( R. speciosum ). Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped to widely funnel-shaped with narrow tube, 2½" across x 1¼" long, with 5 frilled lobes, 50C strong pink (Claret Rose) flushed red, with 25A strong orange (Orpiment Orange) dorsal blotch. Stamens and pistil exserted. Calyx ⅛", green. Truss 6" across x 2½" high, conical, with 7-10 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3-4" x 1-1¾", elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, 143B strong yellow green (Scheele's Green), ciliate, slightly strigose along veins and moderately pubescent, both on under surface and seen with lens. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, 6' tall x 5' across in 15 years. Blooms in late April, early May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'KELLY'S ORANGE': A deciduous azalea. R. flammeum ( R. speciosum ) x 'Cecile'. Cross (1972), raised and introduced by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Flowers narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 frilled lobes, 30A vivid reddish orange (Nasturtium Red) with yellow blotch in dorsal lobe sector. Stamens and pistil exserted. Calyx ¼", green. Truss 6" across x 2" high, conical, with 3 - 5 flowers. Leaves 2¾ - 4½" x 1¼", between elliptic and oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, dull, 138A moderate yellowish green, ciliate, rarely strigose, under surface slightly strigose and moderately pubescent along midvein (hairs seen with lens), leaves yellowish in fall. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately, open, 5' tall x 4' across in 11 years. Blooms mid to late April. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'LEONA HOLMES': 'Boule de Neige' x [ R. fortunei x R. vernicosum aff. (Rock #8139, 1929)] Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by William Fetterhoff, Gibsonia, PA. Buds 48C strong pink (Empire Rose). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 7 evenly rounded to slightly wavy lobes, overall 38B moderate yellowish pink (Azalea Pink) shading to 27C pale yellowish pink in lobe center and throat with dorsal lobe blotch (flare) 16C light orange yellow (Buttercup Yellow) extending slightly on adjacent lobes, ± ¾" x ± ¾", fading with age, with 2 rays (stripes) of medium red up through blotch (fade with age), reverse with 54C strong pink (Spinal Red) ribs. Calyx negligible. Truss 12 cm. across x 8 cm. tall, ball-shaped, slightly lax, with 10-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 7 - 9.5 cm. x 3.2 - 4.3 cm., near elliptic to slightly near narrowly obovate, widely acute to obtuse with slight mucro, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, 146A moderate olive green. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 26" tall x 42" across in 18 years. Blooms mid - to late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'MADAH JEAN': 'Marinus Koster' open pollinated. Seed collected (1962), raised, and named by Pauline Newberry, Fort Bragg, CA. Described and introduced by Eleanor Philp, Trillium Lane Nursery, Fort Bragg, CA. Buds Rose Red 724/3 (H.C.C.) (58B strong purplish red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 5½" across x 1½" long, with 5 frilled lobes, Phlox Pink 625/3 with edging and reverse Rose Bengal 25/1 (57C vivid purplish red), with Indian Lake 826/2 (59B deep purplish red) spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ¾", Citron Green 763/1 (151B strong greenish yellow). Truss 11" x 11", conical, tall, with 12-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held to 4 years, 9" x 3½", lanceolate, acute, rounded, glabrous, 147A moderate olive green. Plant rounded, branching well, 7' tall x 9' wide in 13 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 15°F.
'MRS. HELEN JACKSON': R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x Chlorops (Chamberlain: "Almost certainly this is a chance hybrid.") Cross (1966) Forrest Bump, M.D., Forest Grove, OR. From A.R.S. Seed Exchange, #393, 1967. Raised and introduced by Gregory H. Kesterson, Everett, WA. Buds 36D pale yellowish pink (Orient Pink). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, with 7 wavy lobes, 3½" across x 1¼" long, 155D yellowish white, throat with 151C strong greenish yellow (Citron Green) dorsal spotting. Calyx 1/16", 151B strong greenish yellow. Truss 7" across x 6" tail, ball-shaped, with 13-14 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 3⅝ - 4½" x 1½ - 2", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, widely acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy 137A moderate olive green, with very light, patchy, 199A moderate olive brown indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 4' x 4' in 19 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'PAINTED SKIES': 'Sunup-Sundown' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1979, raised, and introduced by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds 52D strong pink (Carmine Rose). Flowers of good substance, corolla openly funnel-shaped, calyx widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 6 frilled lobes, 38D light yellowish pink (Coral Pink) darkening to 52D strong pink (Carmine Rose) toward lobe edges, yellow orange flush on dorsal lobes, 2 orange rays in dorsal lobe sector, reverse 62D-C pale to light purplish pink. Calyx 1½" (same size as corolla), 52D (as corolla). Truss 6" across x 4½" tall, dome-shaped, with 11-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3-4" x 1- 1½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, dark green. Plant upright with stiff branches, open, branching moderately, 2' tall x 1½' across in 6 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'PAPAYA PUNCH': 'Hotei' x Tropicana (an unregistered Lester Brandt hybrid of unknown parents). Cross (1971) by E.C. Brockenbrough, M.D., Bellevue, WA. Raised and introduced by Gregory H. Kesterson, Everett, Wa. Buds 47C deep yellowish pink (Delft Rose). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5-6 wavy lobes, opens 19B light yellowish pink (Saffron Yellow) with ½" 19D pale orange yellow (Egyptian Buff) edging and broad 13C brilliant yellow (Straw Yellow) flares (rays) in all lobes' sectors (dorsal 3 lobes darker than lower lobes), with 44A vivid red spotting on flares (dense in throat, sparse at edges); as corolla ages changes to 13C brilliant yellow (Straw Yellow), flares to a brighter yellow and spotting diminishes. Calyx 1¼", 20D pale yellow (Chinese Yellow) with rays and spots 32A vivid reddish orange (Indian Orange). Truss 7" across x 5½" tall, dome-shaped, with 13-15 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾ - 5" x 1⅝ - 2", between narrowly oblong and oblong to between narrowly elliptic and elliptic, convex, with very narrow edge sharply downturned, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dull, 137B moderate olive green. Plant broad, branching moderately, 4' tall x 5' wide in 14 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'PRIMITIVE BEAUTY': A Southern Indian hybrid evergreen azalea. Parents are unknown. Photograph in Azaleas , Galle, 1985. Cross (1970) and seedling grown by Tom Dodd (III) Nursery, Semmes, AL. Raised and introduced (1982) by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Flowers loose, with individual lobes cut to base, 2" across, with 5, 2" long x ½" wide, evenly rounded "petals", somewhat fragrant, white. Calyx ¾", green. Truss 5" across x 3" high, conical, with 3 - 5 flowers. Leaves held 2 years (well through winter), 1⅞ - 2½" x ¾ - ⅞", near narrowly elliptic, acute (knobbed), narrowly cuneate, dull, 144A strong yellow green (Lettuce Green), ciliate (somewhat long and soft), moderately strigose (tan), under surface moderately strigose (tan hairs of irregular length and rather soft.) All hairs best seen with lens. Plant broad, rounded, branching moderately, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least 5-10°F.
'SAM VACCARO': 'Roseum Elegans' x 'Rosyln'. Cross (1964), raised, and introduced by William Fetterhoff, Gibsonia, PA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 6.5 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, bluish white, near 91D very pale violet at edges, fades quickly to white, 64A moderate purplish red (Ruby Red) blotch, ½ - ¾" long, on dorsal lobe. Calyx negligible, white. Truss 12 cm. across x 10 cm. tall, ball-shaped, with 12-15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5.5 - 13 cm. x 3.5 - 6 cm., near elliptic to broadly elliptic, flat, widely acute to obtuse (both with slight mucro), cuneate to rounded (some oblique), glabrous, glossy, 146A moderate olive green, very light, patchy indumentum of very short colorless hairs (seen with lens). Plant semi-dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 3½' tall x 4½' wide in 21 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -22°F.
'SARA COPELAND': A deciduous azalea. R. canescens . A naturally occurring seedling found in a cutover swamp in Terrell County, GA. Collected (1983), named, registered, and introduced by Vernon Copeland, Bronwood, GA. Described by Fred C. Galle. Buds light pink. Flowers 1¼" x 1¼", narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, fragrant, white, tube reverse pink. Stamen filaments are aborted to form a petaloid ring of funnel-shaped tissue to which up to 20 anthers are terminally attached (sometimes with a few more or less normal stamens). Flower outline generally approaches that of Narcissus Barrii. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 4" across x 2" long, conical, with 7-9 flowers. Leaves 1¾ - 2¼" x ⅝ - ⅞", between near narrowly elliptic and elliptic, flat, acute with long apiculus, narrowly cuneate, ciliate with curved steae, upper surface puberulous, under pubescent (hairs seen with lens), 143A strong yellow green (Scheele's Green), yellowish in fall. Plant upright, branching well; cutover plant in wild was 5' tall x 4' wide in 6 years. Blooms in late March - early April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'SIERRA STARS': 'Sunup-Sundown' x 'One Thousand Butterflies'. Cross (1979), raised, and introduced (1985) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds 46C vivid red (Turkey Red). Flower corolla openly funnel-shaped, large calyx widely funnel-shaped, 2½ - 3½" across, with 5 wavy to frilled reflexed lobes, 56D pale purplish pink to ¼" from lobe edges, there becoming 46C vivid red (Turkey Red) edging, light gold area (1½" long x ¾" wide) of spotting in center of dorsal lobe sector, 46C vivid red lines down center of each lobe into base of throat, throat 52C deep pink (Carmine Rose), reverse 46C. Leaves held 2 years, 4 - 5⅞" x 1¾ - 2¼", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, dark green, with light, patchy, easily rubbed off, light orange brown indumentum. Plant upright with stiff branches, open, branching moderately, 2' x 2' in 6 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'SUNRISE SERENADE': 'Hotei' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1976) and raised as seedling by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Raised by Mr. and Mrs. Robert V. Mann, Surrey, B.C., Canada. Named by Mann. Described and registered by Lofthouse. Introduced (1982) by Lofthouse and Mann. Buds: corolla 36A light yellowish pink (Orient Pink); calyx 27B light yellowish pink (Salmon). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 7 wavy lobes, 27C pale yellowish pink, flushed 38D light yellowish pink (Coral Pink) as ⅜" edging within (fades as flower ages), with light gold spotting in dorsal lobe sector, lobes reverse 38D. Calyx 1¼ - 1½", lobes 5, uneven, longest are dorsal, 27C pale yellowish pink. Truss 7" across x 4" tall, dome-shaped, with 14-18 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4-5" x 1½ -2", between elliptic and narrowly elliptic, flat, acute to apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, somewhat glossy, dark green. Plant upright, branching well, 64" tall x 52" across in 9 years. Blooms early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'TSUNESHIGE ROKUJO': A deciduous azalea. R. serrulatum x R. prunifolium . Cross and raised by Dr. Henry T. Skinner, Hendersonville, NC (deceased). Cutting given to Mary Louisa B. (Polly) Hill (Mrs. Julian W.) (1972) who raised and distributed plant. Buds 55A deep purplish pink (Neyron Rose) between 55D pale purplish pink ribs (glandular, hairy). Flowers very narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 3.7 cm. x 3.7 cm., with 5 evenly rounded, re-flexed lobes, fragrant, 55B strong purplish pink (Neyron Rose) (some 55C light purplish pink or 55D pale purplish pink), throat 55D, stripes (rays) 55D to white down center of each lobe into throat. Pistil and stamens exserted; style prominently deep rose. Calyx 2 mm., pale green. Truss 10 cm. across x 3.7 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 6-24 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 4.5 - 6.5 cm. x 2.25 - 3 cm., near elliptic to narrowly obovate, concave, revolute, margin undulate, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, glabrous, somewhat bullate, 147B moderate yellow green, both surfaces (with lens) smooth (hairless) except for very few setae on under midrib. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 5' x 5' in 13 years. Blooms in late August. Hardy to at least -10°F.
'VIBRANT VIOLET': R. impeditum x R. augustinii . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Frank Fujioka, Everett, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, 88A vivid violet with 166C brownish orange anthers. Calyx 1/16", 144C strong yellow green. Terminal flower cluster 3½ - 4" across x 3 - 3½" high, composed of 4 -5 trusses, each 5 - 6 flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1¼ - 1¾" x ⅝ - ¾", near elliptic to wider than lanceolate (ratio near 2:1), concave, acute, cuneate, dull, 139A dark yellowish green, with moderately spaced, small, golden brown to yellow scales on both surfaces (best seen with lens). Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 6' x 6' in 19 years. Blooms in late March. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'VINELAND FRAGRANCE': 'Scandinavia' x ('Catalgla' x R. fortunei ). Cross (1960) and raised by Roy Forester at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada LOR 2EQ. Grown for 10 years, named, registered, and introduced (1978) by Rudy Behring, St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 8 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5-7 (aver. 6) wavy to frilled lobes, very fragrant, light purplish pink 73C, throat strong purplish pink 73B, 2 cm. edging very pale purple 73D (Mallow Purple), with strong greenish yellow 151A spotting in dorsal lobe sector and with 4 moderate reddish orange 178D rays in throat below dorsal lobe, reverse with deep purplish pink 73A ribs and veins. Calyx 2 mm., strong yellow green 145A. Truss 14 cm. across x 12 cm. high, conical, with 12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 12 cm. x 4 cm., narrowly elliptic, flat, mucronate, rounded, glabrous, glossy, moderate olive green 147A. Plant upright, branching well, 160 cm. tall x 120 cm. wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
'WHITE ERMINE': Greenwood evergreen azalea. 'Linda Jean' x 'Satanta'. Cross (1975), raised, and introduced by Wilhelm L. Guttormsen, Canby, OR. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1¼" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, white, throat yellow-green, spotting in dorsal lobe sector and slightly on adjacent sectors. Calyx ¼", green. Inflorescence 1 - 2 flowered. Leaves held well through winter, ⅞ - 1¼" x 7/16- ⅝", narrowly obovate, concave, mucronate, cuneate, quite pilose, under surface moderately pilose to strigose (particularly along veins), hairs fawn, best seen with lens. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 12" x 12" in 6 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'WHITE FLAKES': A deciduous azalea. A naturally occurring seedling found in Haralson County, GA. Collected (1969), grown, and introduced by Fred C. Galle, Hamilton, GA. Photograph in Azaleas , Galle, 1985. Buds light pink. Flowers quite fragrant, 1⅜" across x 1" long, tubular funnel-shaped, double, with 30 or more evenly rounded to irregular, white (with pale to light pink tips) lobes and "petals" (some concave), with roll of numerous small "petals" in center. No stamens or pistil. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 4½" across x 2" high, with 3 - 5 flowers. Leaves 2 - 3½" x ¾ - 1", between oblanceolate and narrowly obovate to narrower than oblanceolate (ratio 4:1), flat, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, 138A moderate yellowish green, ciliate, rarely strigose and shortly pubescent on both surfaces, with colorless hairs seen with lens, yellowish in fall. Plant upright, branching moderately, 5' tall x 4' wide in 10 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
