Color designations below refer to the Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1966, unless otherwise stated. When R.H.S Colour Chart (1966) numbers are used, the color names preceding these numbers are those of the Universal Color Language (ULC) or Inter-Society Color Council-National Bureau of Standards (ISCC-NBS). The following list contains names of North American hybrids registered during the period November 4, 1986 through February 1, 1987.
'BLUE DAWN': Elepidote. 'Susan' x 'Mrs. Davies Evans'. Cross (1972), raised, named, introduced, and registered by A. P. Johnson, Port Orchard, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, 23 per truss, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Strong purple (82B) buds open to moderate purple (82C) flowers with strong purple (82B) edging, c ¼" wide, and green spotting dorsal lobe. Reverse is also strong purple (82B). Calyx ¼", yellow-green. Dome-shaped truss, 6" across x 5" high. Leaves 4½ to 5" x 2", elliptic, revolute, acute, cuneate, dull, bullate, dark yellowish green (139A). Plant upright, broad, well-branched, free-flowering, 6' high x 6' wide in 13 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant hardy to at least 10°F.
'BLUE GIRL': Elepidote. 'Susan' x 'Mrs. Davies Evans'. Cross (1972), raised, named, introduced, and registered by A. P. Johnson, Port Orchard, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 2" long, 20 per truss, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Strong reddish purple (72B) buds open to light purple (77C) flowers with strong purple (77B) edging, c ¼" wide, and dark red spotting dorsal lobe and half of adjoining lobes. Green calyx is minute. Tall conical truss, 7" across x 6" high. Leaves 5" x 2¼", elliptic, concave, apiculate, cuneate, dull, slightly bullate, moderate olive green (147A). Plant upright, broad, well-branched, free-flowering, 5' high x 5' wide in 13 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant hardy to at least 10°F.
'JUMPING JEFF': Elepidote. 'C.I.S.' x 'Jock'. Cross (1964), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Gwen Bell, Seattle, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¾" across x 2" long, 5-6 per truss, 6-7 lobes, wavy margins. Strong purplish red (63A) buds open to deep pink (52C) flowers with deeper pink (52B) throat and vivid red (52A) rays on dorsal lobe where it joins adjacent lobes. Calyx ¾" to 1", deep pink (52B). Lax truss, 6" across x 6" high. Leaves 3¼" x 1¾", broadly elliptic, convex, apiculate, cordate, dull, moderate olive green (147A). Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, free-flowering, 3' high x 4½' wide in 16 years from seed. Blooms late April to early May. Plant hardy to at least 4°F.
'LEONA MAUD': Elepidote. R. yakushimanum x 'Thomaleum'. Cross (1968), raised, named, introduced, and registered by A. P. Johnson, Port Orchard, WA. Flowers funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, 18 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong red (53D) buds open to vivid purplish red (57D) flowers with deep red (53A) spotting dorsal lobe, fade to pale purplish pink (55D) with age. Calyx ⅛". Ball/dome-shaped truss, 5" across x 5" high. Leaves 4" x 1¼", elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, smooth, dull, moderate olive green (137A). Under surface has moderate felt-like indumentum, grayish yellow green (197D). Plant broad, semi-dwarf, well-branched, free-flowering, 2½' high x 4' wide in 15 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant hardy to at least 0°F.
'SHIRLEY': Elepidote. R. yakushimanum , Exbury form x 'Thomaleum'. Cross (1972), raised, named, introduced, and registered by A. P. Johnson, Port Orchard, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2⅛" across x 2¼" long, 19 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Moderate to dark purplish pink (186D-C) buds open to pink flowers which fade rapidly to yellowish white (155D) with spotted green blotch at base of dorsal lobe. Both pink and white trusses are present simultaneously. Calyx ⅛", green. Ball truss, 5" across x 4" high. Leaves 3" x 1¼', elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, dull, moderate olive green (137B). Under surface has felt-like indumentum, yellowish white (196D). Plant rounded, well-branched, free-flowering, 4' high x 3' wide in 13 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant hardy to at least 12°F.
'VINEBLUSH': Elepidote. 'America' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1962) and raised by Roy Forster; named and described by A. W. Smith, both Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada; introduced and registered by H.R.I.O. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1⅛" across x 1" long, at least 11 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep pink buds open to deep purplish pink to strong pink (54B-C) flowers which fade to white. Calyx 1/16", green. Flat ball truss, 4¼" across x 3" high. Leaves 3½" x 1-9/16", elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, glossy. Plant medium height, spreading, dense growth habit, free-flowering, 3¼' high x 3¼' wide in 24 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -16°F.
'VINEBROOK': Elepidote. R. smirnowii x 'Lady Bessborough'. Cross (1961) and raised by Roy Forster; named and described by A. W. Smith, both Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada; introduced and registered by H.R.I.O. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3⅛" across x 1-9/16" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. White flowers with strong purplish red (64B) flares in throat of dorsal lobe, and light spotting of same color extending itself half way up lobe. Calyx 1/16", medium green. Ball truss, 6¼" across x 5⅞" high. Leaves 5½" x 2", elliptic, acute, cuneate, smooth; under surface has slight felt-like indumentum. Plant tall, upright, spreading, open growth habit, 6½' high x 3¼' wide in 25 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -16°F.
'VINEMARK': Elepidote. ('America' x R. yakushimanum ) open pollinated (1967). Raised by Roy Forster; named and described by A. W. Smith, both Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland Station, Ontario, Canada; introduced and registered by H.R.I.O. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1⅜" long, 20 per truss, 5-6 lobed, wavy margins. Light purple (84B) buds open to light purple (84C) flowers of heavy substance, with deeper colored flare in throat. Calyx 1/16", green. Ball truss, 5⅛" across x 4¼" high. Leaves 5¾" x 2⅜", elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, glossy. Plant medium height, upright, spreading, dense growth, c 6' high x 3¼' wide in 19 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least-16°F.
