'APRIL CLOUD':  Lepidote. [(Unnamed double from PJM group x selected pink R. mucronulatum ) x R. dauricum f. album ] x ( R. carolinianum f. album x unnamed selection from PJM group). Cross (1978) by Edmund V. Mezitt; raised, introduced, and registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc; described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, all Hopkinton, MA; named by Martha Maxfield, Holliston, MA. Flowers 5-8/truss, openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x ¾" long, double (5 + 5-lobed + 3-5 petaloid stamens), wavy margins. Light yellow green (154D) buds open to pale yellow green (155A) flowers. Calyx 1/32", green. Flat ball-shaped truss, 2" across x 1" high. Leaves ¾" to 1½" long x ½" to ¾" wide, elliptic, slightly convex, apiculate, cuneate, with rusty-green colored scaly indumentum. Dense growth habit, very floriferous, 4' high x 3' wide in 9 years from cutting. Blooms late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.

'APRIL LOVE':  Lepidote. [(Unnamed double from PJM group x selected pink R. mucronulatum ) x R. dauricum f. album ] x [Pioneer (unregistered Gable hybrid) x unnamed O.P. hybrid from PJM group]. Cross (1978) by Edmund V. Mezitt; raised, introduced, and registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc.; named by R. Wayne Mezitt; described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers 6-8/truss, widely funnel-shaped, 1½" across x ¾" long, double (5 + 5-lobed + 5 petaloid stamens), frilled margins. Two outer cycles of petals light purplish pink (55C); inner cycle pale yellow (11C), aging to pale purplish pink (56B). Calyx 1/16", green. Flat ball-shaped truss, 2½" across x 1½" high. Leaves 1½" to 2¼" long x ⅝" to ⅞" wide, oblong, flat and convex, acute, cuneate, with rusty-green colored scaly indumentum. Upright, dense growth habit, very floriferous, 4' high x 3' wide in 9 years from cutting. Blooms late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.

'APRIL SNOW':  Lepidote. [(Unnamed double from PJM group x selected pink R. mucronulatum ) x R. dauricum f. album ] x ( R. carolinianum f. album x unnamed selection from PJM group). Cross (1978) and named by Edmund V. Mezitt; raised, introduced, and registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc; described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers 12/truss, openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x ¾" long, double (5 + 5-lobed + 3-5 petaloid stamens), wavy margins. Light yellowish green (150D) buds open to yellowish white (155D) flowers. Calyx 1/32", green. Flat ball-shaped truss, 2½" across x 1½" high. Leaves ¾" to 1½" long x ⅜" to ⅝" wide, oblong, acute, cuneate, with rusty-green colored scaly indumentum. Dense growth habit, very floriferous, 3' high x 3' wide in 9 years from cutting. Blooms late April/early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.

'APRIL SONG':  Lepidote. [(Unnamed double from PJM group x selected pink R. mucronulatum ) x R. dauricum f. album ] x [Pioneer (unregistered Cable hybrid) x unnamed O.P. hybrid from PJM group]. Cross (1978) by Edmund V. Mezitt; raised, introduced, and registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc; named by R. Wayne Mezitt; described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers 10/truss, widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, hose-in-hose (5 + 5-lobed), wavy margins. Moderate purplish pink (62B); stamens are present, but are fused to form an inner ring of contrasting lighter pink color. Calyx 1/16", green. Ball-shaped truss, 2½" across x 2½" high. Leaves 1" to 1½" long x ⅝" to ⅞" wide, oblong, convex, acute, rounded, with rusty-green colored scaly indumentum. Upright, dense growth habit, very floriferous, 5' high x 5' wide in 9 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.

'BEATRICE HYDE':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum f. album x R. dauricum f. album . Cross (1977), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Richard Murcott, East Norwich, NY. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, 14 per truss, 5-lobed, smooth-edged margins, white. No calyx. Ball-shaped truss, 4" across x 4" high. Leaves 2" long x ⅝" wide, elliptic, flat, acute, rounded, with scales below. Upright, open growth habit, very floriferous, 4' high x 2' wide in 9 years from seed. Blooms mid to late April. Plant hardy to at least -5°F; buds, 0°F.

'BLUE THUNDER':  Lepidote. Open pollinated 'Blue Diamond'. O.P. (1961), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Loyd Newcomb, Snohomish, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1⅝" across x ¾" long, 3-5 per truss, 5-6 lobes, wavy margins. Vivid violet (88A) with strong purple (82B) throat; deep reddish purple (77A) ray down center of lobe on reverse; many fine hairs, very pale purple (92D), around base of each stamen and in throat at base of corolla. Calyx ⅛", strong yellow green (144C) edged with moderate red (47A). Dome-shaped truss, 2¾" across x 1¾" high. Leaves 1" long x ⅜" wide, narrowly elliptic, concave, apiculate, cuneate, with tiny, closely spaced scales below; moderate olive green (147A) above. Winter foliage dark grayish reddish brown (200A); new growth strong yellow green (144A) edged strong red (46A). Rounded, compact, well-branched, 4½' high x 5' wide in 26 years from seed. Blooms mid April. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'ELBY':  Elepidote. ('Fabia' x R. bureavii ) x ('King of Shrubs' x R. smirnowii ). Cross (1964) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA; raised, named, and introduced by Loyd Newcomb; described and registered by Edna F. Newcomb, both Snohomish, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2¼" long, 6-9 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep pink (51B), with lower lobes changing to light yellowish pink (159A); strong red (46A) throat and spotting dorsal lobe; reverse strong red (53D); strong red (53B) rays down center of each lobe (2 on dorsal); buds vivid red (46C). Calyx 1¼", same color as flower. Flat truss, 6"-7" across x 4"-5" high. Leaves 4½" long x 1½" wide, elliptic to narrowly elliptic, convex, apiculate, rounded; moderate olive green (147A) above, moderate yellow green (146B) below with light, hairy, brownish orange (164A) indumentum. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, very floriferous, 4½' high x 4½' wide in 22 years from seed. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'GALA':  Elepidote. Big Sam [unregistered Elliott cross ('CIS' x unnamed hybrid)] x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1974), raised, named, introduced, and registered by James A. Elliott, Astoria, OR. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1½" long, as many as 15 per truss, 6-lobed, wavy margins. Color:(H.C.C.) neyron rose (623/1) shading gradually to (623/3) in center, with poppy red (16/1) spotting upper lobe; reverse neyron rose (623/1). Calyx ¼", neyron rose(623/1). Lax ball truss, 7" across x 6" high. Leaves 4" long x 2" wide, elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate; upper surface smooth, parsley green (00962), underside pod green (061/2). Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 5' high x 5' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms late April. Hardy to at least 10°F.

'GERTRUDE SAXE':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum (unnamed pink selection) x R. mucronulatum (unregistered pink selection known locally as Paul's Pink). Cross (1973), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Richard Murcott, East Norwich, NY. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¼" across x 1" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish pink (55B). No calyx. Ball-shaped truss, 4" across x 4" high. Leaves 2½" long x 1" wide, elliptic, flat, acuminate, rounded, with brown scales below. Upright, very floriferous, 6' high x 6' wide in 9 years from seed. Blooms mid to late April. Plant hardy to at least -10°F; buds, -5°F.

'HONSU'S BABY':  Lepidote. R. keiskei 'Yaku Fairy' x R. spiciferum . Cross (1978), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Herbert Spady, Honsuchachac Rhododendron Garden, Salem, OR. Flowers 4/ truss, widely funnel-shaped, 1⅜" across x ¾" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. White with pale purplish pink (56C) margins; buds strong purplish pink (55B). Calyx ⅛", green. Conical truss, 2⅜" across x 2" high. Leaves 1⅜" long x ⅝" wide, ovate, convex, acute, rounded, with scaly indumentum. Semi-dwarf, dense growth, very floriferous, 15" high x 28" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms mid April. Plant and bud hardy to at least 7°F.

'KING'S RED':  Deciduous azalea. Parentage unknown. Cross (c 1975) by Edward King, Alexandria, VA; raised, named, introduced, and registered by August E. Kehr, Hendersonville, NC. Flowers openly to widely funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, 11-14 per truss, 6-lobed, with frilled margins. Vivid red (46B). No calyx. Ball truss, 5" across x 4" high. Leaves 3¾" long x 1⅝" wide, elliptic, convex, apiculate, rounded, bullate. Plant upright, open habit, 4' high x 2' wide in 6 years from cutting. Blooms mid May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F.

'LEM'S TANGERINE':  Elepidote. 'Margaret Dunn' x ('Anna' x 'King of Shrubs'). Cross (1967) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Loyd Newcomb, Snohomish, WA. Flowers 10-14/truss, openly funnel shaped, 3¼" across x 2¼" long, 5 to 6 lobes, wavy margins. Strong yellowish pink (40D) with deep yellowish pink (43C) edging, c 3/16" wide, and vivid red (44A) throat; reverse vivid reddish orange (41A) with 3 to 5 vivid reddish orange (42A) rays, 1½" to 2" long. Calyx ⅜" to 1", moderate reddish orange (41C). Dome-shaped truss, 5¼" across x 4½" high. Leaves 4½" long x 1¾" wide, lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, convex, acute, cuneate; smooth, shiny, moderate olive green (147A) above, light yellow green (145B,C) below. Plant upright, open habit, moderately branched, 5' high x 4½' wide in 19 years from seed. Blooms late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

'MARY LOU KEHR':  Evergreen azalea. Unnamed Gable R. macrosepalum hybrid #2 x 'Heiwa-no-hikari' (Hirado, USDA PI 274710). Cross (1963), raised, named, introduced, and registered by August E. Kehr, Hendersonville, NC. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2½" long, double (petals not tightly packed). Light purplish pink (55C); very fragrant. Calyx ⅜", green. Leaves 2⅝" long x 1¼" wide, elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, hairy. Spreading, open habit, very floriferous, 2½' high x 3' wide in 6 years from cutting. Blooms mid May. Plant hardy to at least -10°F; buds, 0°F.

'NASELLE':  Elepidote. Big Sam [unregistered Elliott cross ('CIS' x unnamed hybrid)] x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1974), raised, named, introduced, and registered by James A. Elliott, Astoria, OR. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, as many as 15 per truss, 6-lobed, wavy margins. Color: (H.C.C.) china rose (024/0) shading to maize yellow (607/2) at base of three upper lobes, with burnt orange (014/1) spotting in throat of upper lobes; reverse china rose (024/1). Calyx is minute. Lax ball truss, 7" across x 6" high. Leaves 4½" long x 2" wide, elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate; upper surface smooth, parsley green (00962), underside pod green (061/2), new growth very pale maroon. Plant broad, rounded outline, moderately branched, 4' high x 5' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms late April. Hardy to at least 10°F.

'PETE LOTRUGLIO':  Lepidote. Parentage and hybridizer unknown. Raised by Pete Lo Truglio, Roosevelt, NY; named, introduced, and registered by Richard Murcott, East Norwich, NY. Flowers open funnel campanulate, 2½" across x 1½" long, 11 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep pink (51C). No calyx. Ball-shaped truss, 5" across x 5" high. Leaves 3½" long x 2" wide, elliptic, with scales below. Spreading habit, very floriferous, 4½' high x 4½' wide in 12 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late April. Plant hardy to at least -5°F; buds, 0°F.

'PJM ELITE':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens . Cross (1939), raised, named, and introduced by Edmund V. Mezitt, described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1" long, 10-15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong reddish purple (72C). No calyx. Flat ball-shaped truss, 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 1½" to 2" long x ¾" to 1" wide, elliptic, convex, obtuse, cuneate, with rusty colored scaly indumentum; foliage color is bronze/mahogany from November through April. Upright, dense growth habit, very floriferous, performs best in full sun and exposed areas; 6' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late April/early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -30°F. Received A.M. (1953) Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

PJM group:  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens . Cross (1939), raised, named, and introduced by Edmund V. Mezitt, described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, typically 1½" across x 1" long, 10-15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Lilac purple to light violet. No calyx. Flat ball-shaped truss, typically 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 1¼" to 2" long x ¾" to 1" wide, elliptic, flat to convex, obtuse, cuneate, with rust colored scaly indumentum; foliage color is bronze/mahogany from November through April. Upright, dense growth habit, medium to semi-dwarf, very floriferous, performs best in full sun and exposed areas; 4-6' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late April/early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -30°F. Received A.M. (1953) Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

'PJM REGAL':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens . Cross (1939), raised, named, and introduced by Edmund V. Mezitt, described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1" long, 10-15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong reddish purple (72A). No calyx. Flat ball-shaped truss, 3" across x 2" nigh. Leaves 1¼" to 2" long x ¾" to 1" wide, elliptic, convex, obtuse, cuneate, with rusty colored scaly indumentum; foliage color is bronze/mahogany from November through April. Upright, dense growth habit, very floriferous, performs best in full sun and exposed areas; 5' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late April/early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -30°F. Received A.M. (1953) Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

'PJM VICTOR':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. dauricum var. sempervirens . Cross (1939), raised, named, and introduced by Edmund V. Mezitt, described by R. Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S. Rogers, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc, all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1" long, 10-15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong reddish purple (72B). No calyx. Flat ball-shaped truss, 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 1¼" to 2" long x ¾" to 1" wide, elliptic, flat to convex, obtuse, cuneate, with rusty colored scaly indumentum; foliage color is bronze/mahogany from November through April. Dense growth habit, very floriferous, performs best in full sun and exposed areas; 4' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late April/early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -30°F. Received A.M. (1953) Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

'PRIDENJOY':  Elepidote. 'Lem's Cameo' x 'Kubla Khan'. Cross (1979), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Loyd Newcomb, Snohomish, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 4½" across x 2⅜" long, 23-28 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins, moderately fragrant. Moderate red (47A) buds opening to pale yellow (20D) flushed light yellowish pink (37D), changing to pale greenish yellow (10D); strong red (39A) spotting dorsal lobe; throat light yellow (11B); reverse moderate yellowish pink (39C). Winter color of dormant flower buds dark red (187B). Calyx 3/16" to 1¼", light yellow (11B) edged strong red (39A). Ball-shaped truss, 7" across x 6¾" high. Leaves 6" long x 2⅞" wide, narrowly obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate; moderate olive green (147A) above, moderate yellow green (146C) below; new growth moderate olive brown (199A). Upright, broad, moderately branched, 3' high x 4½' wide in 7 years from seed. Blooms mid April. Hardy to at least 0°F. Placed on ARS Eligibility List, 1987.

'PURPLE JEWEL':  Elepidote. 'Nova Zembla' x unknown. Cross (1963), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Louis A. Hindla, Bohemia, NY. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1¾" long, 12 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Moderate purplish pink (74D) shading to nearly white in throat; prominent dark red (187B) spotted blotch at base of dorsal lobe. Calyx 1/16", light green. Ball-shaped truss, 5½" across x 5" high. Leaves 4" long x 1⅝" wide, elliptic, wavy margins, apiculate, cuneate; upper surface smooth, dark yellowish green (139A), underside moderate yellow green (147C) with plastered indumentum. Plant broad, upright, well-branched, 6' high x 6' wide in 22 years from seed. Blooms late June. Hardy to at least -10°F.

'STEPHANIE MARIE':  Evergreen azalea. Miyuno no Tsuki [unreg. USDA PI 226144 (1955)] x 'Hino-Red'. Cross (1976) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Holly Hills, Inc, Evansville, IN. Flowers 22/truss, heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1⅝" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Calyx ¼", strong yellow green (145A). Truss 3" across x 2" high. Light purplish pink (55C) to pale purplish pink (55D). Leaves 2" long x ⅞" wide, obovate, apiculate, cuneate. Spreading, dense growth, very floriferous, 2' high x 2' wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms mid April to early May. Plant hardy to at least -15°F; buds, -10°F.
