Bronze Medal Awards
MIDWEST CHAPTER
Dr. Donald Paden
The Midwest Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society proudly presents the Bronze Medal to Dr. Donald Paden for his cheerful and dedicated service to the ARS at both the local and national level and for his pioneering efforts in producing uncommon rhododendrons by colchicine treatment of plants in tissue culture. Don is presently serving as Director of District 11, ARS, and as chapter research chairman. His dedication to gardening and rhododendrons in particular is evidenced in the beautiful garden that he and his wife, Elaine, have created in Urbana, Illinois.
MASON-DIXON CHAPTER
Harold Edward Reiley
The Mason-Dixon Chapter chooses Harold Edward Reiley to be its first recipient of the Bronze Medal award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the chapter and for his growing of rhododendrons and azaleas. Ed and his wife, Mary, have been most generous in donations of plants for chapter plant sales. They have welcomed visitors to their home and garden and have always been willing to share their knowledge with anyone who comes.
Ed has served the chapter well, being a founding father, Board of Directors member, President, and has had board involvement in committee work since the chapter's beginning. It is due to Ed's encouragement and the sharing of his knowledge that individual members and the Mason-Dixon Chapter have grown.
The Mason-Dixon Chapter proudly presents this award, May 9, 1987.
PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER
Mrs. Julian W. Hill
The Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Chapter ARS is honored to award the Bronze Medal of the American Rhododendron Society to Mrs. Julian W. Hill.
Polly Hill, you are a chapter member known internationally for your horticultural skills and for your interest in bringing into home gardens new and improved forms of woody garden plants. Assuming management of Barnard's Inn Farm, Martha's Vineyard, in 1957, you began growing Rhododendron nakaharae crosses from seeds sent to you from Japan. After fifteen years of careful evaluation and selection you introduced the first North Tisbury hybrid evergreen azaleas, more affectionately known to us as "Polly Hills". With these low growing cultivars you extended our azalea blooming season into mid-July.
For your reputation as a grower and selector; for the sharing of your interest and knowledge of azaleas, rhododendrons and many other forms of woody plants with chapter members; for your willingness to provide cuttings from your special plants; and for your warm hospitality to welcoming chapter members to your fascinating farm, especially to see your prize collection of plants in the "play pen"; the Philadelphia Chapter is honored to present this Bronze Medal to Polly Hill, April 24, 1987.
Kenneth and Renee Miller
The Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Chapter ARS is honored to award the Bronze Medal of the American Rhododendron Society to Kenneth and Renee Miller.
Ken and Renee, you are chapter members known to many of us for your years of dedicated work for the benefit of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. Collectively, you have held important Chapter offices with Renee serving as Recording Secretary, and Ken as President, Program Chairman and most recently as Chairman and driving force behind the successful cut truss shows at Tyler Arboretum. You have both served as Directors, and through your presence, friendship and knowledge have added greatly to the success and our enjoyment of the activities of the Chapter. You have opened your home garden to members of the Chapter, are avid growers and propagators of rhododendrons, azaleas and other plants, and most recently have been engaged in insuring the preservation of the plants of Loyd Partain. In recognition of your past participation in the Chapter and in anticipation of our continuing benefit of your participation, the Philadelphia Chapter is honored to present this Bronze Medal to Kenneth and Renee Miller, April 24, 1987.
TACOMA CHAPTER
Bill and Carole Hicks
The Tacoma Chapter presents its highest award, the Bronze Medal, to Bill and Carole Hicks for your outstanding service and generous support of the Tacoma Chapter. Having held almost every office and position of responsibility, this "Team" has provided much of the fuel on which the Society runs. Your regular contribution to the annual Show, especially of the smaller and dwarf rhododendrons, has done much to educate and delight the public. Your term as editors of the newsletter set new standards and earned recognition as one of the best newsletters in the entire American Rhododendron Society.
This award is presented as an expression of the Chapter's appreciation and of our personal thanks for your efforts.
