Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, 20/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Pale yellow (8D) with strong greenish yellow (151A) blotch; buds strong pink (54C). Calyx 1/16", light green. 'BALTIC LACE': Elepidote. Unnamed hybrid (low, white, F 3 ). Cross (1980) by Edmund V Mezitt; described by R Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S Rogers; raised, named, introduced, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc.; all Hopkinton, MA. Yellowish white (158D) flowers, openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1¼" long, up to 25/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Calyx 1/32", light green. Ball truss, 4" to 5" across x 3" to 4" high. Leaves 3" long x 1¼" to 1½" wide, oblong, acute, cuneate. Low, spreading, dense habit; very floriferous; 1½' tall x 2' wide in 7 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.
'BIG DEAL': Elepidote. Unnamed hybrid (low, white, F 2 ). Cross (1971) by Edmund V Mezitt; described by R Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S Rogers; raised, named, introduced, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc.; all Hopkinton, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, 18 to 20/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Pale yellow (8D) with dark greenish yellow (152C) blotch which ages to strong greenish yellow (151C). Calyx 1/16", light green. Ball truss, 6" across x 4" high. Leaves 3½" to 4" long x 2" wide, elliptic, concave, acute, cuneate. Low, spreading, dense habit; very floriferous; 1½' tall x 2' wide in 7 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.
'BILL BOWEN': Elepidote. 'Mrs. J. C. Millais' x 'LaBar's White'. Cross (1963), raised, named, introduced, registered by William M Fetterhoff, Gibsonia, PA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3½" wide x 1½" long, 14 to 18/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Very pale purple (69A) buds open to mauve/white and fade quickly to white; large strong greenish yellow (151A) blotch dorsal lobe, extending into adjacent lobes. Calyx negligible. Dome truss, 8" wide x 5½" high. Leaves 2⅜" to 5¼" long x 1" to 2¼" wide, elliptic, apiculate, cuneate. Heavy flower substance, moderately floriferous; spreading habit, 6' tall x 6' wide in 24 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -22°F.
'BLACK SATIN': Lepidote. PJM group F 2 sdlg. Cross (c 1972) by Edmund V Mezitt; described by R Wayne Mezitt and Christopher S Rogers; raised, named, introduced, registered by Weston Nurseries, Inc.; all Hopkinton, MA. Strong reddish purple (72B) flowers, tubular funnel-shaped, 1¼" across x ¾" to 1" long, 5/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Calyx 1/32", light pink/ green. Ball truss, 2½" across x 1½" high, with 10 or more trusses/branch. Leaves 1¼" to 1¾" long x ½" to ¾" wide, oblong, apiculate, cuneate, with scaly indumentum aging from light green to rusty green. Very dark mahogany foliage remains dark after plant has bloomed. Dense habit, very floriferous, 3' tall x 3' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -20°F.
'CHIEF KITSAP': Elepidote. 'Diane' x calophytum . Cross (1967) by Ben Nelson, Suquamish, WA; raised, named, introduced, registered by A P Johnson, Port Orchard, WA. Flowers 3½" across x 2½" long, openly campanulate, 15/truss, 5 wavy lobes, moderately fragrant. Pale greenish yellow (2D) with deep red (53A) blotch at base of dorsal lobe. Calyx ⅛", green with red edge. Dome truss, 7" wide x 7" high. Leaves 6" long x 2½" to 2¾" wide, lanceolate, convex, apiculate, rounded. Very slight, brownish tan hairy indumentum on new growth. Upright habit, well-branched, 8' tall x 3½' wide in 20 years from seed. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'CORAL FANTASY': Elepidote. 'Exbury Fabia' x 'Spring Parade'. Cross (1978), raised, named, introduced, registered by Walt Elliott, Shelton, WA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, 7 to 8/truss, 5 to 7 wavy lobes. Yellowish white (158C) with vivid red (45A) flare in throat and some light coral longitudinal markings on reverse. Buds deep yellowish pink (43C). Calyx ½" to 1½", deep yellowish pink (43C) to pale purplish pink (56A). Lax truss, 6" wide x 4" high. Leaves 3" long x 1" wide, elliptic, flat/curled edges, apiculate, cuneate. Upright, open growth habit; very floriferous; 3½' tall x 3' wide in 8 years from seed. Blooms late May to early June. Plant hardy to at least 0°F; buds, 28°F.
'DOVER ROSE': Elepidote. 'Dido' x 'Chlorops'. Cross (c 1971), hybridizer unknown; raised, named, introduced, registered by Margaret Stewart, Sandy, OR. Flowers 2½" across x 1¾" long, funnel-shaped, 10/truss, 5 wavy lobes, peach color (no chart used). No calyx. Lax truss, 5" to 6" wide x 3" high. Leaves 2¾" long x 1¼" wide, elliptic, concave, mucronate, cuneate. Dense, rounded growth habit; 6' tall x 6' wide in c 15 years from seed. Blooms mid to late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least 0°F.
'ELIE BASKER': Elepidote. 'Idealist' x caloxanthum . Cross (1976) by Dr Carl Phetteplace, Leaburg, OR; raised from seed, named, introduced, registered by Donald A Horsley, Bremerton, WA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 1½" long, 11/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Light orange yellow (16B) buds open to light greenish yellow (4B) flowers with ⅛" vivid reddish orange (44B) nectary. Calyx ⅜", light greenish yellow (4B). Lax truss, 7" wide x 2½" high. Leaves 3¾" long x 1⅞" wide, elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate. Dense growth habit, moderately floriferous, 4' tall x 5' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms mid April. Plant and bud hardy to at least 0°F.
'ELLIOTT'S CREAM PUFF': Elepidote. 'Carolyn Grace' x 'Crest'. Cross (1975), raised, named, introduced, registered by Walt Elliott, Shelton, WA. Pale greenish yellow (2D) flowers, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 1½" long, 8 to 9/truss, 7 wavy lobes, moderately fragrant. Calyx ⅛", light yellow (15D). Ball truss, 7" wide x 5" high. Leaves 4" long x 2" wide, elliptic, apiculate, cuneate. Upright, open growth habit; very floriferous; 5' tall x 5' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms early to late April. 'FANNY BELLS': Elepidote. 'Mary Belle' x 'Fanfare'. Cross (1976), raised, named, introduced, registered by Herol M Harrington, Wilbranam, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, 18 to 24/truss, 5-lobed. Deep purplish red (10RP 3/10) buds open to strong purplish red (10RP 4/12) flowers. [Nickerson Color Fan] Calyx 1/16", green. Dome truss, 6" wide x 7" high. Leaves 5" long x 2⅛" wide, elliptic, slightly convex, apiculate, cuneate. 'FOREST FESTIVAL': Elepidote. 'Vera Elliott' x 'Whitney Appleblossom' (not registered). Cross (1980), raised, named, introduced, registered by Walt Elliott, Shelton, WA. Deep pink (52C) flowers, tubular funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2½" long, 11 to 12/ truss, 5-lobed, heavy substance. Calyx ½" to 1", deep pink (51C). Lax truss, 8" wide x 6" high. Leaves 7" long x 2½" wide, elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate. Upright, open growth habit; very floriferous; 4' tall x 4' wide in 7 years from seed. Blooms mid May to early June. 'FRANCES SHANNON RACOFF': (Syn Dexter Winterthur#22 and #62): Elepidote. Cross (date unknown) by Charles O Dexter, Sandwich, MA; raised, named, introduced, registered by Winterthur Museum and Gardens, Winterthur, DE. Flowers 3¼" across x 1⅜" long, widely funnel-shaped, 16/truss, 5 wavy lobes, slightly fragrant. Deep purplish pink(67C) shading to lighter pink in throat; olive green blotch. Calyx c 3/32", green. Conical truss, 6¾" wide x 5½" high. Leaves 4¾" long x 2⅛" wide, elliptic, flat, mucronate, rounded. Spreading habit, dense growth, 8' tall x 10' wide in 25 years from cutting. 'HAL BRUCE': (Syn Dexter Winterthur #18): Elepidote. Cross (date unknown) by Charles O Dexter, Sandwich, MA; raised, named, introduced, registered by Winterthur Museum and Gardens, Winterthur, DE. Flowers 3¼" across x 1¾" long, openly funnel-shaped, 7 to 10/truss, 7 wavy lobes, slightly fragrant. Pale yellow (18D) shading to light yellow (15D) throat; margins suffused deep purplish pink (58D); brownish blotch; buds strong red (53D). Calyx c 3/16", green suffused red at tips of lobes. Flowers widely funnel campanulate, 1" across x ½" long, 14/ truss, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Pale yellow green (4D) with strong greenish yellow (151A) spotting in three upper lobes. Calyx vestigial, light yellow green. Conical truss, 5" wide x 4" high. Leaves 3½" long x 1½" wide, elliptic, flat, obtuse, cuneate. Plant 16" tall x 12" wide in 20 years from seed. Blooms mid May. 'KAY WALTERS': Elepidote. Hybrid of unknown parentage x yakushimanum . Cross (1966), raised, named, introduced, registered by William M Fetterhoff, Gibsonia, PA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¼" wide x 1" long, 15/truss, 5 wavy lobes. Strong purplish red (63B) fading to light purplish pink (63D), with edges and reverse ribs remaining strong purplish red (63B); brownish white blotch peppered with greenish mustard specks in dorsal lobe. Buds strong purplish red (63A). Calyx negligible. Slightly lax dome truss, 4¾" wide x 4" high. Leaves 2" to 4⅜" long x ¾" to 1¾" wide, elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, with thinly plastered, tan, hairy indumentum. Upper surface of leaves glossy, with silvery tomentum. Plant low, spreading, very floriferous; 22" tall x 36" wide in 21 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant hardy to at least -22°F; buds, -15°F. Received Best yakushimanum Hybrid award, Great Lakes Chapter, ARS (1978).
'MADISON SNOW' (Syn 'Madison'): Lepidote. White selection from dauricum . Cutting of un-bloomed sdlg obtained from Carl Phetteplace, Leaburg, OR; selected (1977), raised, named, registered by Conrad J Wrzesinski, Middleton, WI; introduced by Knight Hollow Nursery, Madison, WI. Pure white flowers, slightly fragrant, widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x ⅜" long, 4/ truss, 5-lobed. Calyx 3/16", light green. Flat truss, 3" across x 1¾" high. Leaves 1¼" long x ⅝" wide, elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Upright habit, very floriferous, 55" tall x 34" wide in 11 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -25°F.
'MARLEY HEDGES': Elepidote. 'Anna' x 'Purple Splendour'. Cross (1970), raised, named, introduced, registered by Elsie Watson, Kirkland, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" wide x 2¾" long, 24/ truss, 5 frilled lobes. White edged with strong reddish purple (72B), with grayish red to moderate purplish red (184A-D) blotch dorsal lobe; reverse strong reddish purple (72B); nectary strong red (53C). Calyx 1/16", light yellow green (145B). Ball truss, 8" wide x 7½" high. Leaves 6½" long x 2" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate. Plant upright, well-branched, very floriferous; 4' tall x 2' wide in 18 years from seed. Blooms mid May. Hardy to at least 9°F. Received Best New Hybrid award, Seattle Chapter, ARS (1987).
'MARSHALL PIERCE MADISON': Vireya. ('Triumphans' x javanicum ) x leucogigas . Cross (1972), raised, named by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; introduced, registered by William A Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 3" long, 14 to 16/truss, 5 to mostly 7 wavy lobes. Strong pink (48C); very fragrant. No calyx. Dome truss, 9" wide x 5" high. Leaves 8" long x 3" wide, narrowly elliptic, concave, acute, cuneate; with tiny, closely spaced, brown scales. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched; 40" tall x 34" wide in 7 years from cutting. Blooms November through January. Hardy to at least 32°F.
'MAVIS DAVIS': Elepidote. 'Orange Marmalade' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross(1981), raised, named, introduced, registered by Joe A Davis, Sumner, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, heavy substance, 3½" wide x 2" long, 10 to 12/truss, 5 or 6 wavy lobes. Pale yellow (19C) edged with moderate reddish orange (35B); reverse and buds moderate reddish orange (35B). Calyx 1" to 1½", pale yellow (19C). Ball truss, 7" wide x 6" high. Leaves 3½" to 4½" long x 1½" to 2" wide, elliptic and obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate. Very floriferous, 28" tall x 28" wide in 6 years from seed. Blooms early to mid May. 'MERRY MAIDENS': Elepidote. 'Mist Maiden' x 'Mary Belle'. Cross (1975), raised, named, introduced, registered by Herol M Harrington, Wilbranam, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3⅜" across x 2" long, 20 to 24/truss, 5-lobed, slightly fragrant. Strong purplish red (7.5RP 5/12) buds open to strong purplish pink (7.5RP 7/10)flowers with blotch of light orange (5YR 8/7) spotted with dark reddish orange (7.5R 4/11). [Nickerson Color Fan] Calyx 1/16", brilliant yellow green (2.5GY8/9). Ball truss, 8" wide x 8" high. Leaves 6" long x 2⅜" wide, elliptic, flat, obtuse, rounded.
