Why is rhododendron research important? It enables you to grow better plants, have a more beautiful garden and a more successful nursery and enjoy your favorite genus to the fullest. This year, the ARS Research Committee, chaired by George Ring, recommended the following research proposals which were funded by the Research Foundation of the ARS.
1. "Efficacy of Entomophgous Nematodes for Biological Control of Root Weevils on Rhododendron in Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden, Eugene, Oregon" - Michael Robert, Curator, Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden, Eugene, OR.
2. "Application of Stockplant Etiolation Toward Improving the Rooting of Rhododendron Softwood Cuttings" - Nina L. Bassuk, Dept. of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
3. "Adventitious Shoot Production and Lomaclonal Variability in PJM Hybrid Rhododendrons" - Professor John E. Preece, Department of Plant and Soil Science, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL.
4. "Establishment of a Permanent Species Collection of Rhododendron, Sect-Vireya, at the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum" - Mr. Robert F. Hirano, Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, University of Hawaii.
5. "A Listing of Places in the United States Where Plants Can Be Sent for Analysis of Nutrition, Disease and Pest Problems" - Ms. Ethel Dutkey, Department of Botany, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
