JARS v46n3 - Southeastern Regional Conference, Oct. 30 - Nov. 1
Southeastern Regional Conference, Oct. 30 - Nov. 1
Avis Aronovitz, Atlanta, Georgia
Every once in a while you see a garden you remember the rest of your life. Dean Gardens on the banks of Georgia's Chattahoochee River, a featured 'stop' on the Southeastern Regional Pre-conference tour schedule, is developing into just such a display. Visits to this and other exceptional gardens, along with the informative talks by this area's top people scheduled during the meetings, assures that the District 10 conference hosted by the Azalea Chapter will be a winner. Slated for the event-packed weekend of Oct. 30-Nov. 1, the conference will take place at the Northeast Atlanta Hilton Hotel.
You will be among the first in the country to view Dean Gardens when you come early to the conference. Imagine a new garden designed for a southern setting but with formal Italian and French gardens as a format. Unified by the water features of lakes and fountains, and adorned with statuary, allees and eventually extensive perennial beds, this is a garden that is as lovely in October as April. The 1,000-foot frontage also contains an Azalea Garden for spring color and a Japanese Garden. Imagine seeing this extraordinary garden being brought to life. The Dean Gardens will be part of the Thursday, Oct. 29, all-day tour, along with the Azalea Chapter's Frank Smith Garden at the Atlanta History Center, and the highly acclaimed Atlanta Botanical Garden featuring the popular Fuqua Conservatory. Expect the botanical garden to be bright with the colors of fall flowers that grace our city into November.
On Friday, we invite you to take a scenic trip through the fabled North Georgia Mountains in autumn with a stop in Hiawassee to see a collector's treasures at the Hamilton Rhododendron Garden. Who said rhododendrons don't grow in the south? A buffet lunch at a charming inn on beautiful Lake Chatuge is included.
Jeff Beasley, Transplant Nursery; Willis Harden, Homeplace Nursery; Dr. Gene Moody, University of Georgia plant pathologist; Brent Heath, bulb expert; John Elsley, Wayside Gardens; Dr. J. C. Raulston, NCS Arboretum; Richard Berry, Goodness Grows Perennial Nursery; and many more are waiting to share important information with you. There is still time. Experience the best there is, an ARS regional autumn conference in Atlanta. Register today.
