American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

The following rhododendron and azalea names, submitted through the North American registrar, were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register by the Royal Horticultural Society, serving as International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron .

Color numbers refer to the RHS Colour Chart unless noted otherwise. Accompanying color names are taken from A Contribution toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticulture , R D Huse and KL Kelly, edited by DH Voss (ARS, 1984).

Species names are based on the RHS's horticulturally modified version of the Cullen and Chamberlain revision of the Balfourian Series classification. Equivalent former and present names are listed in An Alphabetical Checklist of Rhododendron Species (RHS, 1981), and in The Rhododendron Handbook (RHS, 1980).

Parents of a plant are reported in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Abbreviations are used where appropriate: H = hybridized by, G = grown to first flower by, R = raised by, S = selected by, N = named by, I = introduced by, REG = registered by; dates are enclosed in parentheses immediately following the activity.

Synonyms are names used for a particular clone prior to registration, but unacceptable because of conflict with recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1980 , or because the name was previously registered for a different clone.

The first group of names completes the Summer 1993 Supplement, which was begun in the previous issue.

' Scotty Lad': Elepidote. ['Scott David' x ('America' x 'Ann Rutledge')]. H (1977), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers, with petaloid stamens, are 2" across x 1.8" long; deep and vivid red (60A, 57A) in bud, opening to blend of strong purplish red (63B), strong purplish pink (63C), and light purplish pink (63D) with vivid red (57A) throat and dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 17 flowers is 5" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.5" x 1.6", and glabrous. Shrub is 6' high x 5' wide 15 years from seed, hardy to at least -20°F, and blooms early June. ('Scott David': unregistered name from the cross [ brachycarpum x catawbiense ])

'Serious Pink': Elepidote. ['Delp's Cindy Lou' x ('Catalgla' x 'Pink Twins') No 5]. H (1981), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 3.5" across x 2.2" long; strong, vivid, and moderate purplish red (67A, B; 70A) in bud, opening to blend of deep, strong, and moderate purplish pink (68A-C) with a white flare and moderate orange (167A) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 19 flowers is 6.3" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 1.9", and glabrous. Shrub is 5' high x 4.5' wide 11 years from seed, hardy to at least -20°F, and blooms early June.

'Shapiro Starbright': Elepidote. ('Vulcan' x 'Slocock 24'). H (1965), G, N, I, and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Widely funnel-shaped flowers are 2.75" across x 2" long with 5 wavy-edged lobes; clear, bright red in bud, opening to 0.25"-0.4" wide edging of vivid red (more intense than 52A, without blue or yellow undertones) shading abruptly to nearly white; reverse slightly lighter than bud color. Tan calyx is less than 0.1" long. Truss of 13-15 flowers is dome-shaped, 5" wide x 5.5" high. Leaves are elliptic, flat, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 2", and glabrous; held 2-3 years. Shrub is upright with moderately dense growth habit, very floriferous, 4.5' high x 5' wide 25 years from seed, and blooms early June; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F and 0°F, respectively. (Synonym: 'Starbright'; 'Sloccck 24' is hybrid of unknown parentage purchased from Rhodo-Lake Nurseries early 1950s)

'Slocock's Late White': Elepidote. (Unlabeled plant from Slocock, thought to be fortunei ssp. discolor hybrid). British hybrid, either unnamed or name unknown; I (USA, c1950): Roland de-Wilde, Rhodo-Lake Nurseries, Bridgeton, NJ; N and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Openly funnel-shaped flowers are 3" across x 2.5" long with 5 wavy-edged lobes; white with chartreuse dorsal blotch, c 1" long, at center of petal. Calyx is chartreuse, 0.25" long. Truss of 14-16 flowers is dome-shaped, 7" wide x 6" high. Leaves are narrowly elliptic, flat, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5"-7" x 2", glossy, dark green, leathery, and glabrous; held 3-4 years. Shrub is upright, 7' high x 6' wide 40 years from cutting; blooms early June; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F and 0°F, respectively.

'Soft Harmony': Elepidote. ('Marquis of Waterford' x unnamed hybrid with brownish-red flowers, parentage unknown). H (1968), G, N, I, and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Widely funnel-shaped flowers are 2.5" across x 1.75" long with 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong purplish red (71C) in bud, opening deep purplish pink (72D) at margins, shading to nearly white center; large patch of vivid reddish orange (40A) and vivid orange yellow (23A) spots on upper lobe. Very pale greenish tan calyx is less than 0.1" long. Truss of 10-12 flowers is tall dome-shaped, 5" wide x 5" high. Leaves are elliptic, flat (wavy-edged when young), acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4" x 1.5", and glabrous; held 2 years. Shrub is upright, 5' high x 4' wide 25 years from seed, and blooms late May; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F and -5°F, respectively. (Synonym: 'Heirloom')

'Starbright': Synonym of 'Shapiro Starbright'. The name 'Star Bright' was registered in 1986 by IC Nichols for an azalea.

'Summer Scene': Elepidote. ('Disca' x 'Mars'). H (1964), G, N, I, and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Openly funnel-shaped flowers are 3.25" across x 2.25" long with 5 frilled lobes; strong purplish pink (62A) shading to white center, with inconspicuous very light greenish tan speckles on all lobes; reverse is strong purplish red (63B) shading to white base. Calyx is light green, less than 0.1" long. Truss of 11-12 flowers is dome-shaped, 5.75" wide x 5" high. Leaves are elliptic, acute (apex), cuneate (base), 7" x 2.5", glabrous; held 3-4 years. Shrub is very floriferous with upright, dense habit; 4.5' high x 5' wide 25 years from seed, and blooms in June; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F and -10°F, respectively.

Ted Kamholtz': Elepidote. ('Purple Splendour' x R. x nikomontanum ). H (1966), G, N, I, and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Widely funnel-shaped flowers are 2.5" across x 1.75" long with 5 re-curved lobes; light reddish purple (74C) in bud, opening white flushed lighter than very pale purple (73D) with dorsal flare of light brown to strong red (46A) spots; reverse is moderate purplish pink (74D) at base, shading to white edges. Calyx is light green, less than 0.1" long. Truss of 14 flowers is dome-shaped, 5.25" wide x 4" high. Leaves are elliptic, convex, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.5"-5" x 2", glabrous; held 2-3 years. Shrub has an upright habit; 5' high x 4' wide 25 years from seed, and blooms early June; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F.

'Tom Ring, M.D.': Synonym of 'Doctor Tom Ring'. Initials may not be used as part of the clonal name.

'Wed': Elepidote. ('Harrisville' x 'Goldsworth Yellow'). H (1979), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers with slightly frilled margins are 3" across x 2.2" long; vivid reddish purple (74A, B) and very pale purple (73D) in bud, opening white with a little (74B) fading to white, and strong yellow green (145A) spots on three upper lobes; calyx absent. Truss of 12 flowers is 6.3" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 2.2", and glabrous. Shrub is 4' high x 4' wide l3 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Your Majesty': Elepidote. ('Disca' x 'Lee's Dark Purple'). H (1965), G, N, I, and REG (1993): Ben and Marion Shapiro, East Brunswick, NJ. Widely funnel-shaped flowers are 4" across x 2.75" long with 7 lobes; strong purplish red (63B) in bud, opening pale purplish pink (65C) with red dorsal throat and freckled flare. Light green calyx is less than 0.1" long. Truss of 9-ll flowers is lax dome-shaped, 7.5" wide x 6.5" high. Leaves are oblong, flat, broadly acute (apex), cordate (base), 5" x 2", and glabrous; held 3 years. Shrub has spreading, dense habit, is 6' high x 8' wide 25 years from seed, and blooms early June; plant and bud hardy to at least -15°F and 0°F, respectively. (Synonym: 'Her Majesty')

The following names were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register during the period May 1,1993 to August 1, 1993.

'Bonus Deal': Elepidote. {'Blue Peter' x [('Atrosanguineum' x 'America') x 'Roslyn']}. H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers with wavy margins are 3.1" across x 2.25" long; light and pale purplish pink (65B-D) in bud, opening white with dark red (187A-C) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 14 flowers is 7" wide. Leaves are acute (apex), rounded (base), 4.8" x 2", and glabrous. Shrub is 4' high x 3.75' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Breakthru': Azaleodendron. ('Oh My!' x 'Gibraltar'). H (1980), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers with frilled margins are 2.1" across x 1.6" long; vivid purplish red (66A) in bud, opening to blend of deep, moderate, and light purplish pink (66C, D; 68D) slowly fading to white; brilliant yellow green (154C) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 14 flowers is 4" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.75" x 2", with woolly brown hairs below. Shrub is 3.5' high x 3' wide 12 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F. ['Oh My!': unregistered name from the cross ( smirnowii x yakushimanum ]; 'Gibraltar': Knap Hill azalea)

'Bright Sight': Lepidote. ('Achiever' x polycladum Scintillans Group). H (1981), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers are 1" across x 0.8" long; vivid reddish purple (78A) in bud, opening to blend of strong and light purple (77B-D) with brilliant greenish yellow (2B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 6 flowers is 2" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 2" x 0.75", and scaly. Shrub is 2' high x 1.75' wide 11 years from seed, and blooms mid to late May.

'Buzzer': Elepidote. ('Tee Cube' x 'Delp's Cindy Lou'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers with frilled margins are 3" across x 2.1" long; deep and strong purplish red (71A-D) in bud, opening strong purplish red (71B-D) with very pale purple (69D) flare and brownish orange (165B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 14 flowers is 5.75" wide. Leaves are obtuse (apex), cuneate (base), 5.75" x 2", and glabrous. Shrub is 4' high x 4' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early Tune; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Carefree': Lepidote. (tetraploid minus Carolinianum Group x fastigiatum ). H (1975), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 1.4" across x 1.1" long; vivid, strong, and light purple (80A-D) in bud, opening brilliant violet (86D) and light purple (85A, B); calyx absent. Truss of 5 flowers is 2.75" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 1.75" x l", and scaly. Shrub is 4.5' high x 4' wide 17 years from seed, and blooms mid May.

'Cephas': Vireya. ('Dr. Herman Sleumer' x leucogigas ). H (1972), G, N, I: Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; REG (1993): Bill Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Very fragrant, tubular funnel-shaped flowers having narrow, straight tubes are 4.25" across x 4" long with 7 wavy-edged lobes; strong purplish pink (55B) with deeper pink sinuses and paler pink throat; calyx lacking. Dome-shaped truss of 4-7 flowers is 9" wide x 5" high. Leaves are elliptic, concave, acute (apex), cuneate (base), 6" x 2"; dull green with scales below; held 3 years. Shrub is upright and spreading, 3.5' high x 3.7' wide 21 years from seed, moderately floriferous, and blooms November to February; plant and bud hardy to at least 32°F.

'Chickadee': Synonym of 'Delp's Chickadee'. 'Chickadee' is one of the Whitewater azaleas hybridized by Henry Motzkau.

'Clincher': Elepidote. ('Ice Cube' x 'Dairymaid'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate flowers with 5 frilled lobes are 2.5" across x 1.8" long; deep reddish purple and strong purple (77A, B) in bud, opening strong and light purple (77B-D) with sparse vivid reddish purple (74B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 20 flowers is 6" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.75" x 2.25", and glabrous. Shrub is 4.5' high x 4.2' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Color Crusher': Elepidote. {[( vernicosum aff. Rock 18139 x Gable's cream-flowered fortunei ) x 'Mary Belle'] x maximum }. H (1977): T L Ring, M.D., Bellaire, OH; G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers with frilled margins are 2.75" across x 2.4" long; strong purplish red (63A, B) and strong and light purplish pink (63C, D) in bud, opening to blend of moderate, light, and pale purplish pink (65A-D) with brilliant greenish yellow (2B) throat and flare, and sparse brilliant greenish yellow (1B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 14 flowers is 5.9" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4" x 1.5", and glabrous. Shrub is 5' high x 4.5' wide 15 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Color Me Pink': Elepidote. ('Midsummer' x 'Delp's Red Max'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 2.5" across x 1.7" long; vivid reddish purple (74B) in bud, opening very pale purple (75D) edged with blend of moderate and light purplish pink (74D, 73C) and very pale purple (73D), with strong orange yellow (22A) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Pyramidal truss of 20 flowers is 6" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 1.1", and glabrous. Shrub is 4.1' high x 4' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms late June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Crisp Classic': Elepidote. ('Tony's Gift' x 'Mrs. Tom H. Lowinsky'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped flowers with 5 frilled lobes are 3" across x 2" long; light purple (84B, C) in bud, opening very pale purple (69C, D) with dorsal spots of brilliant greenish yellow (3A), moderate orange (168C), and moderate yellow green (146D); calyx absent. Truss of 18 flowers is 6" wide. Leaves are obtuse (apex), rounded (base), 3.75" x 2", and glabrous. Shrub is 6' high x 4.5' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F. ('Tony's Gift': unregistered name for ['Catalgla' x 'Belle Heller'])

'Crispy Clear': Elepidote. ('Lodestar' x green-eyed 'Catalgla'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 3.1" across x 2" long; deep reddish purple (77A), and strong, light, and very pale purple (77B-D; 75D) in bud, opening to blend of very pale and light purple (76D; 77C, D) with light olive and dark greenish yellow (152B, C) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 24 flowers is 6.5" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 2.5", and glabrous. Shrub is 5.5' high x 5.25' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Dashing Beauty': Elepidote. ('Christina Delp' x 'Slippery Rock'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate flowers with 5 frilled lobes are 3" across x 2.5" long; strong purplish red, strong and deep reddish purple, and strong purple (72A ,B; 77A, B) in bud, opening light purple (77C, D) with white flare and deep greenish yellow (153A) dorsal spots; strong purple (77B) veins on reverse; calyx absent. Truss of 16 flowers is 7" wide. Leaves are obtuse (apex), cuneate (base), 3.9" x 2", and glabrous. Shrub is 6' high x 6' wide 18 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Dazzling Array': Elepidote. ('Delp's Cindy Lou' x 'Captain Jack'). H (1976), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped flowers with 5 wavy lobes are 3.1" across x 2.25" long; dark red and deep purplish red (59A, B) in bud, opening to blend of vivid and light reddish purple (74B, C) and moderate purplish pink (74D), with light olive and dark greenish yellow (152B, C) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 18 flowers is 6.7" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.4" x 2.2", and glabrous. Shrub is 4.25' high x 4' wide 16 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F.

'Delicate Pink': Synonym of 'Delightful Pink'. 'Delicate Pink' was rejected because it may be confused with a common descriptive term.

'Delightful Pink': Elepidote. ('Catalgla' x 'Cadis'). H (1975), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate flowers with 5 frilled lobes are 2.5" across x 2" long; strong purplish red and strong, light, and pale purplish pink (63B-D; 65D) in bud, opening light and pale purplish pink (65B-D) with brilliant greenish yellow (151D) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 25 flowers is 6.25" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4.25" x 2", and glabrous. Shrub is 6' high x 5.5' wide 17 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F. (Synonym: 'Delicate Pink')

'Delp's Chickadee': Lepidote. [('Achiever' x 'Cutie') x 'Arctic Pearl']. H (1975), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 1.8" across x 1.3" long; light, very light, and very pale purple (75A-D), opening to blend of same colors (75A-D), with brilliant yellow green (150B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Multiple-bud truss of 3 flowers is 1.6" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), rounded (base), 2.5" x 1.25", and scaly. Shrub is 2.5' high x 2.25' wide 17 years from seed, and blooms mid May. (Synonym: 'Chickadee')

'Delp's Excellence': Elepidote. ('Ben Moseley' x 'Besse Howells'). H (1975): D L Hinerman, M.D., Ann Arbor, MI; G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped flowers with 5 wavy-edged lobes are 3.5" across x 2.2" long; deep and strong purplish red (71A, B; 67A) in bud, opening strong reddish purple (72C) with very pale purple (69D) stripe on midrib of each petal, and dark red (187A) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 12 flowers is 6" wide. Leaves are obtuse (apex), cuneate (base), 5.5" x 2.5", and glabrous. Shrub is 4.25' high x 4' wide 17 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F. (Synonym: 'Excellence')

'Delp's Folly': Elepidote. ('Midsummer' x 'Delp's Red Max'). H (1977), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers are 1.7" across x 1.3" long; strong purplish red and strong purplish pink (63A-C) in bud, opening to blend of strong purplish red, strong and light purplish pink (63B-D) with a white throat and strong yellow green (144A) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 21 flowers is 4.3" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 2", with brown woolly hairs below. Shrub is 2.5' high x 2.5' wide 15 years from seed, and blooms late June.

'Delp's Happy Face': Lepidote. ('Achiever' x 'Gable's Pioneer'). H (1974), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped flowers with 5 frilled lobes are 1.6" across x 1.3" long; strong purplish red (71D), strong reddish purple (72C), and deep purplish pink (72D) in bud; opening to blend of strong reddish purple (72C), very pale purple (75D) and white, with sparse moderate orange yellow (164B) dorsal spots; calyx absent. Truss of 8 flowers is 3.1" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 3" x 1.5", and scaly. Shrub is 5' high x 5' wide 18 years from seed, hardy to at least -20°F, and blooms mid May.

'Delp's Whirlwind': Elepidote. ('Newport' F4). H (1952), G, I, and REG (1992): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Widely funnel-campanulate 5-lobed flowers are 2.25" across x 2" long; vivid and strong reddish purple (78A, B) and vivid purplish red (66A) in bud, opening vivid and light reddish purple (74B, C) and moderate purplish pink (74D) with white flare and deep purplish red (61A) dorsal spots; calyx absent. The truss of 18 flowers is 6" wide. Leaves are broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 4" x 2", and glabrous. The shrub is 4.75' high x 4.5' wide 40 years from seed, and blooms early June; hardy to at least -20°F. (Synonym: 'Whirlwind')

'Diehard': Elepidote. ['Stokes Bronze Wings' x ('America' x 'Ann Rutledge')]. H (1968), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. Openly funnel-shaped 5-lobed flowers are 2.25" across x 1.6" long; deep and strong purplish red (61A, 63A) in bud, opening to blend of strong and vivid purplish red and deep and pale purplish pink (61B-D; 62D) with dark red (59A) dorsal spots on three upper lobes; calyx absent. Truss of 16 flowers is 5" wide. Leaves are acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5" x 2.25", and glabrous. Shrub is 5' high x 5' wide 24 years from seed, and blooms late June; hardy to at least -20°F. (Pollen parent is Delp's AA17)

'Digame': Elepidote. ('Goldsworth Orange' x white-flowered smirnowii ). H T L Ring, M.D., Bellaire, OH (1979), G, I, and REG (1993): Weldon E Delp; N: Ginny Delp, Harrisville, PA. H (before 1943): Charles O Dexter, Sandwich, MA; S (from a flat of rooted Dexter cuttings obtained from Long Island, NY), N, and I (c 1970): Thomas W Koenig, Interlaken, NJ; REG (1993): Robert A Murray, Colts Neck, NJ. Moderately fragrant, openly funnel-shaped flowers with 5-7 slightly wavy-edged lobes are 2.75"-3" across x 2.1" long; strong purplish pink (68B) shading lighter at midrib of each lobe, with sparse strong yellow green (145A) spotting on dorsal; outside 68B; calyx negligible. Dome-shaped truss of 12-14 flowers is 6.5" wide x 6" high. Leaves are 6.5" x 3", elliptic, flat, obtuse (apex), oblique (base); dull, moderate olive green (137B) above; moderate yellow green (147C) below; glabrous; held 2 years. Shrub is very floriferous with spreading, dense habit; 7' high x 9.7' wide 20-25 years from cutting; blooms mid May; plant and bud hardy to at least -10°F.

'Sandra's Fancy': Evergreen azalea. ('Corinne Murrah' x 'Gumpo'). H (1979), G (1981), N, I (through Le-Mac Nurseries), and REG: Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Openly funnel-shaped to flat flowers of heavy substance, with 5 wavy-edged lobes, are 3.25" across x 2.25" long; sporting various: some deep purplish pink (67C), some light purplish pink (68D), some upper petals with strong purplish red (67A) blotch, some blotches pale yellow green; most flowers white with stripes and/or sectors of moderate purplish pink (68C) or light purplish pink (68D); most flowers have some type variegation except the reversions to (67C); calyx 0.12", light yellow green (144D). Spring leaves are 1.5" x 0.63", oblong, flat, acute (apex), cuneate (base); glossy, strong yellow green (143A) above; moderate yellow green (146C) below; with discrete white hairs above and below, aging to white to light brown; summer leaves obovate, held 1 year; petiole hairy. Shrub is very floriferous with spreading, dense habit; 2' high x 3' wide 13 years from seed; blooms 4th week in May; plant and bud hardy to at least 5°F.

'Semper Fidelis': Vireya. [( laetum x leucogigas ) x konorii ]. H (1974), G (1980), N, I, and REG (1993): Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA. Very fragrant, open funnel-campanulate flowers of heavy substance, with long narrow tubes, are 3.5"-4.5" across x 3.5" long with 7 wavy-edged, crenulate lobes; white with light yellow inner tube; calyx lacking. Crown-shaped truss of 7-9 flowers is 8" wide x 4.5" high. Leaves are elliptic, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 5.5" x 2.5", with tiny scales. Shrub is upright, 4' high x 3' wide 19 years from seed, very floriferous, blooming intermittently March through August; plant and bud hardy to at least 32°F.

'Siouxon' (pronounced SOO-sahn): Elepidote. (selection from yakushimanum ). S (mid 1960s) and G: H L Larson, Tacoma, WA; subsequently R: Elmer Fisher, Sumner, WA; N, I, and REG (1993): David Balint, Vancouver, WA; described by Mark Weiss, Brush Prairie, WA. Openly campanulate flowers with 5 smooth-edged lobes are 1.5" across x 1.5" long; somewhat redder in bud than other forms of yakushimanum , opening strong red (53B) and fading to white; calyx absent. Dome-shaped truss of 8-10 flowers is 5" wide x 4" high. Leaves are 1.75" x 0.75", narrowly obovate, convex, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base); deep yellowish green (141A) and glossy above; with woolly hairs below, strong orange (168B) aging to brownish orange (171B); held at least 4 years. Shrub is moderately floriferous with spreading, low, dense habit; 0.6' high x 1.3' wide 8 years from cutting; blooms early May; plant and bud hardy to at least -5°F. (This is the clone, "yak No 6", used by H L Larson for all of his yakushimanum hybrids.)

'Whirlwind': Synonym of 'Delp's Whirlwind'. The name 'Whirlwind' is registered for a Glenn Dale azalea.

CORRECTIONS
'Cape Cod Cranberry' was obtained originally by Mabel Tsugawa (Woodland, WA) from Toichi Domoto (Haywood, CA), who was possibly the hybridizer.

The Naming Challenge
There can be more to naming a rhododendron than naming your own child. This is what Eddie Newcomb, a hybridizer from Snohomish, Wash., found out this fall. The plant to be named was a beauty (see cover photo) - a seedling from the hybrid cross of ('Holy Moses' x 'Albatross') x 'Abe Arnott'. The cross was made in 1981 and produced several exceptional garden plants. The plant shown on the cover of this issue was the best, according to nurseryman Dave Hammond. Eddie Newcomb decided to register it in the name of Dave's wife Joanie. The name was to be "Joanie Hammond".

Registrar Jay Murray foresaw no problem with the name, since it was unlikely that anyone else would have chosen the same name. But, alas, someone had! When the name was screened by the RHS registrar, he found a near duplicate. Someone had already named a rhododendron 'Joan Hammond' and therefore "Joanie Hammond" was unacceptable. A new name had to be found. The solution was 'Joan Leslie Hammond', Joanie Hammond's full name. And, yes, it is acceptable. Look for it in an upcoming Plant Name Registry in the Journal.

(Following are guidelines to help find the right name for your hybrid.)
Naming Rhododendrons and Azaleas
Some years before the registration of plant names became an international endeavor, the founders of the American Rhododendron Society recognized the need for stable, unambiguous names to distinguish cultivars. Immediate attention was given to cataloging previously named rhododendrons and registering names of new hybrids in order to avoid duplication of names for different clones.

In 1955 the Royal Horticultural Society was named International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron , and the ARS assumed the role of a regional registration agent, supplying data to the RHS. In this capacity we follow all the international regulations regarding the naming of rhododendrons and azaleas. The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants , which applies to all plants worldwide, is the basis for the rules.

When the RHS was appointed, names in prior use were collected and recorded as they existed, even if they did not conform to the rules of nomenclature. This created a large listing of names which would not be acceptable if proposed today.

Once a name is being considered, it should be screened with the regional registrar to determine whether it meets the requirements of the Code. Registration should follow as soon as possible before distribution. It can not be emphasized too strongly that registration authorities and their agents do not make any quality evaluations. It is assumed that growers will have evaluated their plants before naming them. The following list of suggestions may be used as a guide for selecting names:

•  Names may consist of one, two, or three words, but should not be excessively long. A limit of 30 letters is being considered.

•  Latin words, including combinations of parent species names, are not permitted.

•  Names may not be reused even if it is believed that every plant of the name in question is no longer living.

•  A name may be registered for only one cultivar in a genus.

•  Names may not include any of the following words: cross, form, variety, azalea, rhododendron (or variations such as rhody), hybrid, grex, or the botanical or common name of a genus or species if it would lead to confusion.

•  Names may not begin with an article (The, A, An) or a form of address such as Mister, Herr, Mademoiselle, Miss, etc. The term Mrs. is still permitted, but not encouraged.

•  Names should not exaggerate the merits of the plant or flower.

•  Abbreviations, initials, numbers (unless spelled out), and names that look or sound like registered names should be avoided.

•  Permission should be obtained before naming a plant for a living individual.

Although botanical names are italicized, cultivar names should be printed in Roman type with the first letter of each work capitalized, and the name enclosed in single quotes. Note that the first letter of the second part of a hyphenated word may or may not be capitalized, depending upon custom.

Finally, in order to be considered legitimate, a cultivar name must be validly published. This step occurs automatically as part of registration. Both the ARS and RHS publish periodic additions to the Rhododendron Register , listing plant names with descriptions and brief histories.
