Minutes of Meeting Of The A.R.S., Portland, Oregon, November 17, 1949
Mrs. Ruth M. Hansen, Secretary
The meeting was called to order by President, Mr. C. I. Sersanous at 5:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Journal Building. Mr. Clarence Prentice of Seattle, Wash., was introduced as the member coming for the greatest distance. Other visitors were introduced. Mr. Leighton Holler of Salem, Oregon was introduced as a new member.
The Secretary was instructed to read a letter from Dr. Philip Lipsett of Oakland, Calif. in which he told of the enthusiasm for rhododendrons in the Oakland area. The Chairman of the Membership Committee was called upon to give a report of his Committee. Mr. C. T. Hansen stated that plans for the membership drive were well under way and the material would soon be in the mails.
Mr. Sersanous made the announcement that Nurserymen in good standing may have the privilege of using the name of the A.R.S. in their advertising. He further told the members that the Board had voted to use some of the plants belonging to the Society in the planting at the Portland Information Center. However this planting would not take place until sometime in the future.
Dr. J. Harold Clarke, Chairman of the Committee on Nomenclature and Awards told of the Camellia and Magnolia Conference which will he held next Spring in the Royal Horticultural Hall; London, England. He further said that anyone wanting his plants tested this next year may do so by writing the Secretary for Details.
Mr. John Bacher then read two letters from Kingdon Ward stating that he was organizing another Expedition into a new area of China which is practically unexplored, horticulturally speaking. Those who are interested in subscribing to this Expedition are requested to contact Mr. John Bacher.
The Secretary then reminded the membership that the 1950 Dues may he paid at this time.
A plant auction was next on the program. This netted the Society $73.50. The plants were donated by Bob Walker, Holgate Nursery, J. B. Bacher, N. Radovich, J. B. Whalley and Henny & Brydon.
The meeting was then turned over to Mr. George Grace who gave a short talk on his trip to England this last Spring. This prefaced his illustrated lecture on English rhododendrons and azaleas. The slides were of unusually fine quality. Mr. Grace had a number of slides showing large plantings of azaleas which were many years old aside from his fine collection of rhododendron pictures. The slides of the R. H. S. show gave one a fine insight into the magnitude of this great exhibition and made everyone present wish for the opportunity of attending one of these shows.
Meeting adjourned.
