JARS v50n1 - In Memoriam: Jim Cross
In Memoriam: Jim Cross
Dr. Phil Waldman
Roslyn, New York
The New York Chapter is saddened by the passing of our long-time friend, benefactor and outstanding plantsman, Jim Cross. After a successful career in finance, he began Environmental Nursery in Cutchogue, N.Y., at age 40. Over the next 30 years, Jim brought many new innovations to the nursery industry which included being the first on Long Island to grow plants in containers. He grew many dwarf rhododendrons and azaleas, and was especially fond of native azaleas, including his own 'Sweet September'. Many lepidotes were introduced through his desire to bring superior plants to the nursery industry. He supplied many plants for our annual plant sale, often gave stimulating talks and generously donated plants. He was one of the most respected and knowledgeable horticulturists with an international reputation and had received countless awards and honors including the Bronze Medal of the ARS in 1984. His fabulous garden, developed with the enthusiastic support of his wife, Connie, was a favorite at the 1992 ARS Convention.
Jim Cross was a good friend, always willing to "talk plants," who gave freely of his advice and knowledge. He affected many people, especially in the nursery industry, because of his love of plants and the joy he found in his work. We will always be reminded of his many contributions.
