In Memoriam: Christine Kemp
Christine Kemp was Member No. 275 in the ARS. The 91-year-old nurserywoman and charter member of the Eureka Chapter of ARS died on Jan. 1, 1998. She founded Kemp's Fortuna Nursery in 1937. A member of garden clubs for 71 years, Christine was a landscape design critic and gardening consultant, active treasurer in the National Council of State Garden Clubs, and an accredited flower show judge, traveling throughout the United States to judge flower shows, particularly for the Daffodil Society. Until shortly before her death she was treasurer of the Eureka Branch of the Fuchsia Society and a member of the American Rose Society, the Fortuna Garden Club, and Women's Auxiliary of the VFW. Her awards include California Garden Clubs' Woman of the Year, Humboldt Rose Society's Bronze Medal, and Humboldt Botanical Garden Foundation's David Douglas Award.
