In Memoriam: Joe W. Jones

Joe Jones of Lake Oswego, Oregon, passed away June 16, 1999. He was born April 30, 1932, in Boise, Idaho, and attended Boise Junior College and Stanford University. After serving in the Army in Alaska, he received an M. B. A. degree from Stanford and became a certified public accountant, working for Arthur Andersen & Co. in San Francisco and Seattle and then for Northwest Regional Education Laboratory in Portland until his retirement in 1995.

Joe was active in Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Lake Oswego and served on the board of directors of various non-profit organizations.

Joe became interested in gardening and rhododendrons through his wife, Adele, and was active in the Portland Chapter. In 1998, he was awarded the Bronze Medal for the leadership, guidance, and financial stability he gave the chapter and for his "quiet but intellectual approach" in solving problems with apparent ease. He served as chairman of the chapter's Finance Committee and as treasurer of the American Rhododendron Society. He also served as budget manager for the ARS 50th Anniversary Convention held in Portland in 1955. Joe and Adele, who served as Journal editor from 1985 to 1991, developed a garden at their home in Lake Oswego, featuring some 300 varieties of rhododendrons and other plants.
