American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

The following rhododendron and azalea names, submitted through the North American registrar, were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register prior to August 1, 2000 by the Royal Horticultural Society, International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron . Names conform to the rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1995 .

Color numbers refer to the RHS Colour Chart unless noted otherwise. Accompanying color names are taken from A Contribution toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticulture , R.D. Huse and K.L. Kelly, edited by D.H. Voss (ARS, 1984).

Parents of a plant are reported in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Abbreviations are used where appropriate: H = hybridized by, G = grown to first flower by, R = raised by, S = selected by, N = named by, I = introduced by, REG = registered by; dates are enclosed in parentheses immediately following the activity.

Metric conversions of flower and leaf measurements are reported in 5mm (0.2") increments for dimensions greater than 25mm (1").

'Alexandra's Ruby': Elepidote. ('Mars' x 'Inca Chief'). H (1986), G (1992), N, and REG (2000): J. Leonard, Sandwich, MA. Fls 15/ball truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; deep red (53A); anthers white. Calyx c 0.1" (3mm) long, grayish yellow green (148D) with strong red (53B). Truss 6" (150mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 3 years, 3"-6" (75-150mm) x 1.25"-2.5" (30-65mm), elliptic, obtuse apex, rounded base, flat margins; dull, moderate olive green (146A) and wrinkled above, hairless. Shrub 6' (1.8m) tall x 8' (2.4m) wide in 12 years. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10°F (-23°C). Late May-early June.

'Alva': Elepidote. ( hemsleyanum x yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'). H (1963), G (1973), N, and REG (2000): D.W. Goheen, Camas, WA; I (c 1980): L. Bulgin, Salem, OR. Fls 14-16/ dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.5" (65mm) long x 3.5"-4" (90-100mm) wide, 7 wavy to frilly-edged lobes; white tinged green-yellow in bud, opening yellowish white (155B, 155D) throughout, unmarked; strongly scented. Calyx minute, pale green and rose. Truss 6" (150mm) high x 8" (200mm) wide. Lvs held 3 years, 5" (125mm) x 2.5" (65mm), obovate, flat, mucronate apex, rounded base; glossy green above, with a thin, felted indumentum below, white to tan at first, deep orange yellow (163A) at maturity. Shrub 5' (1.5m) tall x 6' (1.8m) wide in 10 years. Plant and bud hardy to at least 5°F (-15°C). May.

'Amy Cotta': Lepidote. (sport from PJM Group). S (1982), G (1984), N (1997), and REG (2000): Steve Cotta, Tiverton, RI; I (1998): Portsmouth Nursery, Portsmouth, RI. Fls 12-15/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 1" (25mm) long x 1.8" (45mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; light purple (75A) in bud, opening inside very pale purple (75D), shading to white in throat; outside light, very light, and very pale purple (75A-D). Calyx 0.4" (10mm) long, strong yellow green (144A). Truss 2" (50mm) high x 3.2" (80mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 1.3" (32mm) x 0.7" (17.5mm), elliptic or sometimes obovate, cuneate to somewhat rounded base, obtuse or slightly retuse apex, down curved margins; semi-glossy, darker than moderate olive green (147A) above, with tiny scales, tan above, rusty brown and more numerous below. Shrub 3.5' (1.1m) tall x 5.2' (1.6m) wide in 18 years, compact, dense habit, slow-growing. Plant hardy to at least -20°F (-29°C). Mid April. (US Plant Patent 11311)

'Bill Vinson': Elepidote. ('Point Defiance' x 'Countess of Derby'). H (1973): Bill Vinson, Sumner, WA; G (c1981), N, and REG (2000): E.T. (Ted) Anderson, Longview, WA. Fls 11-15/conical truss, open funnel-campanulate, 4" (100mm) long x 2.5" (65mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (53B) in bud, opening inside strong purplish red (58B) at margins, paling to strong purplish red (58C) at center; outside strong purplish red (58B), fading a little lighter; stigma vivid red (46C). Calyx rim-like, strong purplish red (58B). Truss 7" (175mm) high x 7" (175mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 6"-7" (150-175mm) x 2.25"-2.75" (55-70mm), elliptic, broadly acute and slightly wavy apex, cuneate base; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, hairless. Shrub 6' (1.8m) tall x 6' (1.8m) wide in 26 years, open habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10°F (-23°C. Early May.

'Black Diamond': Elepidote. ('Lord Roberts' x 'Cowboy Joe'). H (1991): Morna Stockman; G (1999), N (1999), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 20-26/ conical truss, openly funnel-shaped, 1.5" (40mm) long x 2.25" (55mm) wide, 5 flat-edged lobes; (no good color match) near strong purplish red (63A-B, 67A) inside and out, with a prominent dorsal blotch of black spots, and with pale yellow stamens. Calyx 0.1" (3mm) long, tan tinged red. Truss 7" (175mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 5.75" (145mm) x 1.75" (45mm), narrowly elliptic, acuminate apex, cuneate base, flat and down curved margins; glossy, dark green above, hairless. Shrub 2.7' (0.8m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 9 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 10°F (-12°C). Late May.

'Boing Boeing': Elepidote. ('Dianta' x 'Kubla Khan'). H (1993): Morna Stockman; G (1999), N (2000), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 8-10/ball truss, funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (53C-D) in bud, opening inside strong to light purplish pink (73B-C) at margins, with a large star-shaped white center, brilliant to light yellow (15C-D) areas on three dorsal lobes, and dense spotting of strong red (53C) in dorsal throat; outside deep to strong purplish pink (73A-B). Calyx 0.25" (6mm) long, green edged yellow. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5" (125mm) wide. Lvs 4.25" (105mm) x 1.75" (45mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, flat and down curved margins; dull, mid green above, hairless. Shrub 2' (0.6m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 7 years, dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 10°F (-12°C). Early June.

'Border Jewel': Evergreen azalea. ('Chinzan' x 'Marian Lee'). H (1994), G (1995), N, and REG (2000): Mark Phillips, Cary, NC. Fls 4-5/lax truss, funnel-shaped, 1" (25mm) long x 1.5" (40mm) wide; buds rose pink with a white base, opening pastel pink with a rose pink picotee edge inside and out, the center and base light pastel pink, unmarked; anthers white; stigma red. Calyx c 0.06" (1.5mm) long, light green. Lvs 1" (25mm) x 0.5" (13mm), elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, flat and down curved margins; glossy dark green above, hairless. Shrub 3' (0.9m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 5 years, dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 3°F (-16°C). Mid May.

'Brim's Heartburn': Elepidote. ('Parker's Pink' x Avocet Group). H (1995): J. Delbert Brim, Mount Airy, NC; G (1999), N (2000), and REG (2000): Marilyn and Bud Whitman, Wall, NJ. Fls 18/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2.5" (65mm) long x 4" (100mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; deep purplish pink (66C) in bud, opening light purplish pink (73C) at edges, fading to pale pinkish white, with a small orange-brown flare in throat of dorsal lobe, spreading as light greenish yellow (8C) rays on three dorsal lobes; outside light purplish pink (73C) flushed with deep purplish pink (66C). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 8" (200mm) x 2.5" (65mm), narrowly elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, flat margins; dull, near moderate olive green (137A) above, mid vein strong yellow green (144B), hairless. Shrub 2.3' (0.7m) tall x 3.3' (1.0m) wide in 5 years, intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least -15°F (-26°C); buds, -5°F (-21°C). Late May.

'Bronzed Beauty': Elepidote. (unnamed Lem hybrid x falconeri ssp. eximium ). H (1986), G (1991), N (1998), and REG (2000): Catherine Weeks; I (1997): Westgate Garden Nursery; both Eureka, CA. Fls 15/slightly lax dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.25" (55mm) long x 3.5" (90mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; light yellow (12C) in bud, opening pale yellow (11C) inside and out, unmarked; moderately scented. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 8" (200mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 5.5" (140mm) x 2" (50mm), elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, slightly upcurved margins; glossy, new foliage dark red (187A), with color persisting for 4-5 months before changing to dark yellowish green (139A) above, moderate yellow green (139D) below, hairless. Shrub 4' (1.2m) tall x 4.5' (1.4m) wide in 12 years, intermediate to dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 11°F (-12°C). Early April.
