JARS v56n1 - In Memoriam: Ernest A. Exner
In Memoriam: Ernest A. Exner
Paul Wurz
The members of the North Island Rhododendron Society were very saddened by the sudden death of Ernie Exner on August 22, 2001. Ernie has been a long-time member of our chapter. He has held many positions on the Executive Committee and was currently our treasurer. Ernie was known for his very jovial personality and his willingness to help and participate and to offer a helping hand whenever it was needed.
Ernie was well known in the Comox rhodo circle for his propagating of rhodos and, more recently, his hybridizing. Ernie's passion for the rhododendron genus was expressed by his love and knowledge of fragrant rhododendrons which dominated his beautiful garden. As well as an excellent gardener, Ernie also was an accomplished woodworker, and club members and the club were frequent benefactors of his handiwork. Ernie left us, as I am sure he would have liked to, very suddenly with his boots on and a paintbrush in his hand. Ernie, we will miss you.
Ernie leaves behind his wife Grace, and many relatives.
