In Memoriam: Helen Agoa
Longtime Shelton Chapter member Helen Agoa passed away on June 29, 2004, from heart-related causes. She was 94 years old and had lived in Shelton thirty-five years. Helen was born Nov. 22, 1909, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1931 and her Certificate of Librarianship in 1940 from the University of California. She was a librarian for the U.S. Army during WWII. She married Maj. John J. Agoa in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1993. Helen is survived by a niece and four nephews and several cousins.
Helen loved to travel, visiting Turkey three times and traveling around the world many times. She lived in Rome, Italy, for three years. She was a member of Saint Edward's Catholic Church and also belonged to the Olympia Weavers Guild. She enjoyed playing bingo and reading. When she was 90 she took a hot-air balloon ride!
Helen and John Agoa joined the Shelton Chapter during the 1975-76 year and were active members who willingly participated in chapter activities for many years. Helen served as chapter president during 1979-1980. She and John were presented the Bronze Medal by the chapter in 1985. Though declining health kept her from attending meetings in recent years, she is well remembered by those who knew her.
