"Frank" Maranville, as he was known to his friends, was a fifty-year resident of Shelton, Washington. He was born in Utica, Kansas, on Jan. 6, 1919, and grew up in Enid, Oklahoma. He graduated from Phillips University in Enid in 1940 with a bachelor"s degree in chemistry and Washington State University in 1942 with a master"s degree in chemistry. He earned a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1948. He worked as a research chemist at ITT Rayonier for thirty years, retiring in 1981. After retiring Frank and his wife Evelyn enjoyed travel, square dancing and attending concerts, operas and plays.
Frank had many interests, including photography, genealogy, stamp and coin collecting. He served on the Shelton Library Board for many years and was president of the Shelton Kiwanis in 1969. Mountain climbing was an enjoyable pastime for Frank; he climbed Mount Rainier nine times and reached the summit of all the major peaks in Washington and Oregon. He inspired his three children to climb to several summits with him. In 1984 he helped organize the Mount Rose Trail Crew, a group of volunteers that reestablishes mountain trails. He worked with the crew until six weeks before his death.
Frank was an avid gardener and longtime member of the ARS. He twice led rhododendron garden tours in New Zealand and Australia. Frank served the Shelton Chapter as president in 1967, in 1974, and again in 1982-83. He contributed to the chapter in many ways and in 1986 was the recipient of the Bronze Medal. His chapter friends will long remember him.
