Citation:
As you will be aware, the RHS aims to encourage the art, science and practice of horticulture in all its branches and one of the most important, and may I add pleasurable, parts of this mission is to recognise the achievement of those engaged in horticulture - wherever they may be in the world.
The decision of the Society's Rhododendron and Camellia Committee to award you the Loder Rhododendron Cup for 2004 reflects the enormous contribution that you personally have made to the advancement of horticulture and especially to the hybridizing of rhododendrons. From your renowned plant discovery and seed collecting trips to China and Bhutan and your own introductions, you have brought forward some of the very best plants available.
Your work has inspired a whole new generation to the joys and delights of the rhododendron and I am sure that it will come as no surprise that you are held in such great esteem by fellow enthusiasts and horticulturists across the world and particularly here in the United Kingdom.
The RHS applauds you on your achievement.
Sir Richard Carew Pole Bt, President
