Most of us returned from Rockville, Maryland, to find beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom in our own back yard. Unfortunately, I found a few weeds growing happily, knowing that the gardener was off on a great adventure to see native azaleas and rhododendrons growing in the Blue Ridge mountains. I'm back in command and before too long RoundupĀ® and the hot summer will put the end to those uninvited.
I know not all members take the time to read this Journal or for that matter my column, but I wish everyone could read this next comment. I have served on a few volunteer groups, but I have never known a more giving couple than June and Tim Walsh of Eureka, California. They have been very active in their local chapter, putting out the newsletter which is a large task indeed. I have a feeling June did most of the work while Tim kept her humored with his million jokes. They have for years added leadership to the Society. Tim was our treasure for two four-year terms and during difficult financial times he helped the Society hold on to all our funds. We own him a big thanks for his guidance. During my term of office as president, we needed a secretary and June volunteered. She is doing a great job with solid advice on many decisions that come before the Society. Well, you would think that would be enough, but no, they have taken the job as the chair for the 2007 convention. The one thing that I am sure of, the convention is in good hands, and it will be fun with interesting and exciting speakers.
Remember rhododendrons make the most beautiful gardens.
