JARS v64n4 - In Memoriam: Esther May Strickland
In Memoriam: Esther May Strickland
Fred WhitneyEsther May "Candy" Strickland lost her battle with cancer on July 16, 2010. She was a true "people person who never knew a stranger." Candy was interested in a variety of plant genera and I knew her for her dedicated support of the Tacoma ARS Chapter. She was always willing to support the Board, organize greeters for the annual truss show, provide refreshments for meetings, be the Sunshine person for ailing members and be that smiling face greeting members at our meetings. Candy also had interest and membership in/support for the Primrose, Fuchsia, Chrysanthemum, Rock Garden, and Sun Bonnet Sue Garden groups. I would wonder if there had existed a society for "weeds," would Candy have had an interest in supporting it?
Candy had such a bright smile which invited (almost demanded) a sincere hug with a responding smile and "Thank You." She will be sorely missed and so hard to replace in our chapter.
The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. The present only is our own. So Live, Love, toil with a will. Place no faith in "Tomorrow" for the clock may then be still.
