Show of the A.R.S. - Portland, Oregon
by C. T. Hansen
The eighth annual Portland Rhododendron Show was held in the Information Center on May 17 and 18. This date being very late for this area, many of the varieties usually shown were missing, as well as most of the species. A total of more than 400 cut trusses were entered in 29 different classes. Of this number only 22 entries were species.
Mr. George Grace won the Dr. Corbin Cup II for the second straight year with a score of 28 points on his 69 entries. Mr. Grace needs only one more win for permanent ownership of this cup. Mrs. Sophie Cason was runner-up with 25 points on 45 entries.
Mr. Rudolph Henny won the Dr. Goodman Cup II on his new American seedling, 'Loder's White' x 'Fabia', which he has named C.I.S. The competition in Class 30 is growing every year. This year there were 23 entries in this class, and some very fine seedlings were shown. Class 30 was started to give the hybridizers of this area a chance to show their new creations and they are giving us some very beautiful and startling new creations. Mr. Rudolph Henny won two P. A. awards, one on his 'Loders White' x 'Fabia' and the other on his 'Borde Hill' x 'Loderi'. Also in this class he exhibited 'Voodoo', a cross of 'May Day' x 'Britannia', on which he was awarded a P. A. just two days before. Mr. Andre Ostebo won second place on his seedling No. 74 and third place with a huge truss of an occidentale cross Azaleodendron on which he was awarded a P. A.
Mrs. Sophie Cason won the Grand Sweepstakes for the finest truss in the show with an enormous truss of 'Pilgrim'. George Grace's truss of 'Mrs. E. C. Sterling', Cecil Smith's 'Snow Queen' and Mrs. Hansen's 'Mother of Pearl' were all exceptional trusses but 'Pilgrim' was judged the finest in the show.
The Rhododendron Nursery, Mr. Glen Savage, proprietor, won the Blue Ribbon and the plaque in the commercial exhibits and also the Purple Ribbon for the finest plant in the show. The plant he won the purple ribbon on was 'Eureka Maid' and stood about seven feet high and easily as wide. Yettick's Nursery of St. Helens, Oregon, won second prize and Lindum Gardens, Mr. Irving B. Lincoln, proprietor, won third prize. Other fine commercial exhibits were entered by Holgate Nursery, Hillside Nursery, Reddaway Nursery, Lacamas Gardens, and Esch Nursery.
Mr. Adolph Meyer was show chairman, Cecil Smith co-chairman, C. T. Hansen in charge of cut trusses, and our secretary, Mrs. Ruth Hansen, was in charge of information. The judges were Mr. Andre Ostebo, Mr. and Mrs. Limey J. Janzen, all of Seattle, Dr. Royal Gick from Eugene, and Mr. Howard Slonecker of Oak Grove. Mrs. R. M. Bovee was recording secretary for the judges.
