Widespread interest is shown each spring, when hundreds of flower lovers come from miles around to see the giant Rhododendron plant of the R. 'Roseum Elegans' variety which is over 12 ft. high and 54 ft. in circumference, (Fig. 28) which may be seen at the Fairview Gardens in Lonaconing, Md., home of Frank T. Phillips.
This plant is over 45 years old and approximately 1500 clusters of bloom this spring. Mr. Phillips has been layering plants for 30 years, and the plants from this original may be seen around Allegany County. Many have gone to distant states. He is proud of his rhododendron and welcomes hundreds of visitors to his garden every year.
