Engineering research ranked 19th
The College of Engineering has been ranked 19th out of 220 accredited U.S. engineering schools in terms of research expenditures. The ranking places the college in the top 10 percent, according to a recent Engineering Education survey. By comparison, the college ranked 86th out of a field of 98 in 1970-71.

A 'top' soil tester
Virginia Tech's crop and soil environmental sciences department has operated a soil testing lab for nearly 50 years. It is the third largest soil-testing lab in the country and has served as a model for other states since it was computerized in 1980.

Housing center under Tech's roof
The College of Architecture and Urban Studies operates one of 13 housing research centers in the country. The centers were established at 13 universities throughout the nation by the National Research Center of the National Association of Home Builders.

Accounting accreditations pay dividends
The Department of Accounting in the R.B. Pamplin College of Business was among the first to receive separate accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business for its undergraduate and graduate programs.

2,100 house calls for animals
The Ambulatory Health Service (AHS) of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine provides emergency and routine veterinary care for animals on farms within the college's service area. AHS clinicians treated more than 6,600 animals on about 2,100 calls during the 1988-89 fiscal year.
