Lacrosse legends
Nikki Hane of Baltimore, Md., and Erica Perkins, a resident of Blacksburg, are 1991 graduates honored with All-American status for their performances on Tech's women's lacrosse team during the 1991 season. Hane was recognized for her outstanding skill in the defensive position of cover point. Perkins received All-American status for the second consecutive year, due to her performance in the offensive position of second home.

As a cover point, Hane was in the crucial position to direct the other defensive players and watch the "free men," or open players of the opposing team. A teammate described Hane as a "phenomenal" player who knew how to direct the team. Perkins' attacking position of second home required her to set up plays, keep the ball moving, and shoot on the goal. Players described Perkins as the organizer for offensive moves on the field and a leader who "would not let anything get in her way."

Prior to the season, the women's lacrosse team was not able to find a coach, so both players also acted as coaches for the club team. They were supervised by Sharon Yeagle, director of the recreation department. Under these women, Tech's team completed a winning season.

Help from Placement Services available to alumni
Where do Virginia Tech alumni turn when they are looking for their first "real job" after graduation? Or when they are deciding whether to change careers? Or when they have been laid off? Increasingly, they are turning to the Alumni Placement Services program. A part of the comprehensive University Placement Services at Virginia Tech, this program is dedicated specifically to offering job search assistance to alumni.

Alumnus, Mark B. Dowty ('86), who had used the Alumni Placement Services program, expressed his thoughts about the program and how it assisted him in his job search: "Using the advice offered through counseling and in the Alumni Job Search Guide, I relearned the skills of job hunting and sent a sample resume and cover letters to the Alumni Placement office for their review.

"Meanwhile, I had begun receiving the Alumni Placement Bulletin, which became the most valuable resource in my job hunt. This listing of 'real,' available positions...provided a back door to get past impersonal personnel offices and speak directly to potential supervisors and co-workers...Needless to say, I have been very pleased with the support and assistance I've received through the program. It helped me find my first job out of college, assisted me [with] a career change, and is now helping me during my recent lay-off."

The Alumni Placement Services program at Virginia Tech is one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind in the nation. It offers alumni a wide array of services tailored to meet their specific job-search needs. All Virginia Tech alumni in need of employment search or career change assistance are encouraged to take advantage of this program. New Virginians founder Paul Breske dies
Following a lengthy illness, Associate Professor of Music Emeritus Paul Alan Breske died Jan. 26. During his 20 years at Virginia Tech, Breske influenced countless students now prominent in the music industry in the United States and abroad.

A composer, arranger, and keyboard artist, he joined the faculty here in 1969 as arranger/accompanist for the Varsity Glee Club. In 1972, he was a co-founder of The New Virginians--the university's singing/instrumental group whose repertoire still includes Breske's innovative musical arrangements. He also arranged music for on-campus groups such as the Tech Showmen, the Concert Band, and some theatrical productions. He also composed or arranged music for Doc Severinsen, four USO shows, the American Conservatory Theatre, the Northern Virginia Chamber Orchestra, the Miss Virginia pageant, and the Miss America pageant, among others.

To honor his memory, the Paul Breske Memorial Fund has been established to provide scholarship support for students participating in musical ensembles in the Department of Music. Contributions should be made to: The Paul Breske Memorial Fund, Department of Music, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

Alumnus takes Appalachian Trail sabbatical
L. Bruce Hogshead (MBA '72) and his wife Polly took a five-month absence from their Calico House mail order sewing business last summer and fall to hike the 2,144-mile length of the Appalachian Trail. The Maine-to-Georgia hike was something they had dreamed about since they began hiking sections of the trail while Bruce was a graduate student at Virginia Tech 20 years earlier. The drought, Hurricane Bob, a pilfering mail clerk, and a displaced cabin made the trip challenging. "By living five months in voluntary simplicity, we learned that the really important things in life are water, shelter, food, warm clothing, and a dependable companion," Bruce writes.

W. Martin Johnson dies
The university lost a dedicated and loyal alumnus with the death of William Martin Johnson (CE '28) on Dec. 8. The retired chairman of Wiley and Wilson Inc. architectural engineering firm, Wilson served Virginia Tech as an Ut Prosim Society benefactor, a charter member of the Rowe Fellow Program, a member of the Engineering Committee of 100, a member of the President's Council Membership Committee, and as president of the Alumni Association Board. He was a recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1978 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the College of Engineering in 1982.

Professor Reaves dead at 89
Professor Emeritus Paul M. Reaves, who taught dairy husbandry at Virginia Tech for 40 years, died Jan. 21. He helped develop the university's dairy herds and nurtured the development of quality dairy operations throughout the region. His contributions to Virginia Tech were recognized when the Animal Science building, Litton-Reaves Hall, was named after him and his colleague, George W. Litton.

Correction: In the Winter issue, the locations of the proposed physical fitness center and new university bookstore are transposed in the map on page 17. The bookstore would be located in the parking lot across from Squires Student Center and the fitness center near the Rector Fieldhouse.

Editor's note: Due to false information provided to the Alumni Association, the name of Fred H. Hayes ('44) was incorrectly included in the deaths section on page 31 of the Fall 1991 issue.
