Alumnus' invention helped eradicate smallpox

Benjamin A. Rubin (M.S. '38) has been honored by the Philadelphia Drug Exchange with the Proctor Medal for his invention of a simple, one-dose vaccination needle. The needle, which administered tiny amounts of scarce smallpox vaccine, is credited with helping to eradicate the disease.

According to D.A. Henderson, director of the World Health Organization's Global Smallpox Eradication Program, "If ever there was an invention which could be said to have truly benefited mankind . . . it was Ben Rubin's eloquently simple bifurcated needle."

The needle Rubin invented, by adapting a sewing machine needle, could be used by amateurs in difficult conditions. Rubin also holds patents on radiation devices, vaccines, steroid chemistry, and microbiology.

Currently, Rubin is designing a jet injection system to send a vaccine or medication into the tissue, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Such a device would make inoculations less painful, more effective, and easier to administer.

Rubin, who holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from Yale, is professor of microbiology and public health at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Last year, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, joining Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell.

The Proctor Medal recognizes an individual who has benefited public health and advanced the progress of the health professions in the pharmaceutical industry. It has been awarded only 14 times since 1861.

Warren president of Lynchburg College

Charles O. Warren Jr. ('61 B.S., M.S.), currently president of the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, will become president of Lynchburg College on July 1.

Selected from more than 140 candidates, Warren will become Lynchburg's ninth president. Prior to his appointment at Plattsburgh in 1979, Warren held several positions at Rhodes College in Memphis, including dean of the college, executive vice president, and professor of biology. He also served as a research biologist at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Buckman Laboratories in Memphis, Tenn., and at a research hospital.

A native of Bluefield, W.Va., Warren received his B.S. and M.S. in biology from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida.

Top-class toppler

Thirty thousand dominos standing on end in the same building with 900 kindergartners doesn't sound like a combination for a successful domino topple.

But Scott Suko ('85) can disagree. The domino topple expert recently worked with the students of Dranesville Elementary School, in Herndon, Va., to design and implement a topple that ran through three floors in celebration of National Engineers Week. The students' contributions to the domino stunt included pyramids, bridges, slalom formations, and the outline of a kindergarten teacher.

A senior engineer with Westinghouse's Electronics Systems Group in Baltimore and world-class domino toppling expert, Suko served as the final inspector of the topple. He reviewed every stunt and connection in the set-up to ensure the topple's success.

At 16, Suko assisted the Hemophilia Association of New York with a domino topple in his hometown of Poughkeepsie. The rest is history.

For the last 15 years, Suko has been "toppling" around the world. He was part of an international team that executed a global topple on six continents, triggered by satellite signals, for the Coca Cola Centennial Celebration.

His other projects have included a television commercial for Domino's Pizza, a trade show film for General Electric Information Services, a guest appearance on the children's television show "Ready to Go" in Boston, and the film "From a Shadowbox" by Jeff Consiglio '83 that was a finalist in the 1986 American Film Festival.

Engineering alumnus honored

Tom Maddock, (C.E. '50) is one of 73 engineers elected this year into the National Academy of Engineering.

Maddock, chairman of Boyle Engineering Corp. in Newport Beach, Calif., is a registered professional engineer in 18 states. He joined Boyle in 1957 after receiving a master's degree in civil engineering from M.I.T. and an M.B.A. degree from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Under his leadership, Boyle ranks among the top 100 design firms in the United States, according to Engineering News-Record magazine. The firm has operations in nine states.

Maddock is the author of numerous professional publications and a featured speaker at conferences and symposia on water resources. He was named 1992 Engineer of the Year by two leading professional engineering societies.

University Distinguished Professor Robert Marshak dies

Robert E. Marshak, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in physics at Virginia Tech, died Dec. 23, two days after receiving the 1993 AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Award for International Scientific Cooperation.

Marshak came to Virginia Tech in 1979 after being president of City College of New York for nine years. His distinguished career in physics includes many honors, including the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize.

He was a theoretical physicist who had made important contributions to his field, starting in the 1940s when, as a student of Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe, he developed an original neutron-slowing-down theory, which was important to the weapons and reactor of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, N.M. More recently, he had been working on grand-unification schemes.

Marshak was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Council and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Council. He promoted international cultural exchanges and founded the International Conferences on High Energy Physics (the "Rochester" Conference) and the International Foundation for Science at Stockholm.
