Subject: list purpose

In order to better coordinate the production of E-journals here at VPI, I've
set up VPIEJ-L. Membership will be limited to library staff, editors, and
their assistants involved in publishing or interested in publishing E-journals
at Virginia Tech. Here we can discuss various ways of producing E-journals:
ASCII vs. PostScript, formatting of journals, and share issues of other
journals for discussion. With this list, I hope we can all keep each other
up-to-date in terms of the progress on a particular title, as well as expose
each other to new and better electronic processing and publishing methods.

Everyone who receives this message is already subscribed. Feel free to
encourage anyone thinking about publishing electronically to subscribe also.

I think the title is almost unreadable. The slash character is to
insubstantial. Perhaps it looks better on some other monitors.

I agree - it is too overpowering on a 80 x 25 screen. It looks good on paper
and maybe if it were smaller it would look better on the screen. I've seen
some library systems with logos created from characters and some are quite
nice. A couple even simulated a 3-D effect.

James - How about subscribing the following to VPIEJ-L?
 1. Mahmood A. Khan, Editor of Hospitality Research e-journal. KHANMA at VTVM1.
 2. Eliza Tse, Assoc. Editor of JIAHR. POLICY at VTVM1.
 3. Mike Olsen, head of Hotel-Rest. Mngmnt. OLSENMD at VTVM1.
All three are heavily involved in JIAHR and should be interested in VPIEJ-L,

I think jazzing up the E-journal cover is a good idea generally, as it helps
win over those wedded to the benefits of print. The E-JOURNAL cover, in
particular, is a bit too big, I think, but on balance I like it.

I think the EJournal cover page looks ok. Perhaps ejournals/ will be the
driving force for postscript based computers (as the NEXT is now) so that we
could all enjoy real graphics instead of quasi-sprite graphics like those
used on the EJournal cover. It reminds me of the artwork created on mainframe
computer printouts a decade ago with X's and O's... Crude, but better than
nothing at all...

The listing of line number is helpful.

I just saw a message that there are now PostScript printers attached to VM.
Perhaps this will make processing PostScript E-Journals easier. I will let
you know or check Fastline for details.

Great. How do we access the postscript printers? Are they 300 dpi or have
they connected a higher resolution device (e.g. Linotronic 300) to the VM's?

There is a Computer Center User Guide (DOCS PR04) dated 1/29/92 about Post
Script printers at Virginia Tech. You could request this to find out more
details.
