SALARIED POSITIONS

BOILER OPERATOR (321P) Power Plant. Normal Starting Pay: $17,166 (Grade 6)

Operates coal, gas, oil-fired boilers, auxiliary and related equipment; greases plant equipment. Assists in the operation of steam turbine generator and auxiliary equipment; performs routine cleaning/housekeeping duties. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience in power-plant boiler operations; ability to learn boiler-water analysis techniques and plant-water regeneration procedures. WITH PREFERENCE GIVEN FOR: Considerable experience or knowledge in boiler-related operations. FULL-TIME POSITION. LABORATORY INSTRUMENT MAKER (84J) Mechanical Engineering. Normal Starting Pay: $24,515 (Grade 10)

Fabricate parts and equipment using departmental computer and mechanical systems for use in instructional and research laboratories. Construct, repair, and maintain specialized mechanical systems which may contain computers, data-acquisition systems, generators, dynamometers, engines, turbines, compressors, hydraulic controls, heat-transfer equipment, refrigeration equipment, solar equipment, computer-controlled lathes, and electronic equipment. Use detailed drawings, and laboratory facilities to fabricate unique equipment for instructional and research projects designed by faculty members and graduate students. Occasionally work from simple sketches and/or instructions involving close communication and interaction with faculty members and graduate students. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of machines, mechanical equipment and systems. Knowledge of circuitry and electronic devices. Knowledge of computer hardware and software for personal and mini computers.Knowledge of computer networking. Ability to skillfully use electronic shop tools including hand tools, machine tools, welding equipment, wood-working equipment, and soldering equipment. Ability to work closely with faculty members and students and to work effectively in a team setting. Ability to work accurately and independently. WITH PREFERENCE GIVEN FOR: Two-year technical diploma in electronics or related area. Considerable experience in a laboratory setting utilizing mechanical, electronic, and computer applications. LABORATORY MECHANIC A (Athletics Grounds Worker) (LC006P) Athletics. Normal Starting Pay: $14,364 (Grade 4)

Assists with athletic fields and facilities in preparation for athletic contests and assists with general repair and maintenance of equipment. Marks and paints playing field at Lane Stadium, Moseley field, soccer fields, band field and English field. Sets up field at Lane Stadium. Drags, scarifies, rakes, and lines baseball field; rebuilds pitchers mound and batters' boxes. Mows play and practice fields and cross-country trail using triplex mowers, tractor and gang-reel mowers. Re-sods, fertilizes, patches, aerates and irrigates fields. Checks all fencing, gates, and locks at stadium and practice fields to assure they are working properly. Performs basic maintenance to various service vehicles such as vans, pick-up trucks, tractors, golf carts, etc. Performs other general maintenance activities as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Grounds maintenance experience to include operation and maintenance of large equipment such as tractors, trailers, front-end loaders, forklifts, mowing equipment, etc. A valid driver's license and a good driving record. Ability to follow instructions; to independently move and handle objects weighing up to 75 pounds. OFFICE SERVICES SPECIALIST (3132B) Biology. Normal Starting Pay: $15,703 (Grade 5)

Provides office support services for approximately 15 faculty members. Duties include preparation, formatting, editing, and proofreading of manuscripts, books, reports, grant proposals, course materials, tables, figures, reviews, and general correspondence. Prepares mailings, copies and collates documents, manages computer storage of materials and transcribes dictation from dictaphone equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A valid typing test score must be on file to be considered for an interview. Considerable experience preparing a variety of documents using word-processing software; knowledge of setting up tables and figures; experience complying with journal formats; experience with automated and manual filing systems; experience proofreading and editing; ability to prioritize work assignments; ability to work with minimal supervision; and ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and graduate students. Provides assistance to the laboratory director including preparing and disseminating reports and correspondence, data entry and file management. Participates in development of an internet service for the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA/CVM) including preparation of documents provided by the center and extracts from the laboratory's own data. Manages and maintains internet "Home-page" for the Center for Veterinary Medicine for the Food and Drug Administration. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated ability to work well with the public. MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT. Postdoctoral Position.

Applications are solicited for a postdoctorate position in dynamical systems. Pending yearly budget approval, the length of the position is three years, and there is a strong possibility for a conversion to a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. Position is an anticipated one-year appointment for 1995-96. In addition to teaching one course per semester, the visitor will lead and assist our efforts in several technology-related directions (with emphasis depending on the candidate's expertise): using technology in mathematics courses at all levels; planning the effective use of self-paced learning modules and distance-learning systems; evaluating interactive software and developing educational modules aimed at communicating and teaching mathematics to K-12 and undergraduate students; developing undergraduate computer labs. This professional faculty position counsels students and parents on financial aid and scholarship eligibility to include awarding scholarships on authorized accounts, and assisting with packaging financial aid awards. THE MOBILE AND PORTABLE RADIO RESEARCH GROUP (MPRG). Research Associate.

With the Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering. Will perform the following duties and responsibilities: design and construct RF systems and components; design and carry out experiments using RF equipment; order, install, and maintain RF and DSP equipment; develop software for DSP systems; supervise graduate students; supervise and manage funded research projects; prepare research proposals and technical reports; organize and lead laboratory tours; interact with sponsors; provide training and support for RF and DSP systems; support MPRG activities including symposium and newsletter. MS in engineering required; Ph.D. preferred. The following skills or experiences are required: prior RF design experience, superior writing and verbal communication skills; ability to write specifications for radio-frequency equipment; demonstrated ability to design and construct radio-frequency systems; ability to program in assembly and high-level program languages; knowledge of C programing language, UNIX operating environment. The coordinator of leadership and student media serves as part of a team of professionals in the Office of Leadership and Student Organization Programs (LSOP) which provides education, guidance and service to student organizations at Virginia Tech. The primary responsibility of the coordinator is to provide administrative, organizational and financial advice and service to the Student Media Board organizations. The coordinator serves as the financial advisor to the Student Media Board (SMB), the oversight organization for the six major student media organizations (newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, radio station, television station and photography staff) with combined annual budgets of nearly $500,000. The coordinator also works with LSOP staff to develop and implement programs and services in the areas of leadership and organizational development. The coordinator is an administrative faculty position in University Unions and Student Activities and reports to the assistant director of student activities. Qualifications include the following: master's degree in student personnel, higher-education administration, business or related field; strong oral and written communication skills; one or two years of experience in a related position preferred; professional or collegiate experience with student media, leadership and organizational development or programing desired. The assistant/associate coordinator will be responsible for coordination and implementation of the University Tutoring Program, Support Program for junior, senior, and transfer students and other peer support programs.
