If Ut Prosim is Virginia Tech's motto, it is also Betsy McCoy's personal motto. Since 1971, when she started her career at Virginia Tech in University Placement Services, to her present position as recruiting manager in Career Services, McCoy has set and maintained high standards of service to both students and corporate interviewers.
"What I like most about my job is customer service," says McCoy. "I enjoy every aspect of interacting with students and employers interviewing on campus."
Her supervisors note that McCoy has also proved adept at meeting the main university challenge of the 1990s--doing more with less. During her departmental restructuring, McCoy consistently sought creative ways to do more with less. "The tougher things are, the harder she works, and the stronger her commitment is to her work," say co-workers.
This Founder's Day, McCoy has been chosen as a recipient of the President's Award for Excellence. The citation reads, in part, "She is an exceptional role model in her good spirit, creative approach to problems, and dedication to the goals of the university."
McCoy said her initial reaction to the award was shock, and that she is proud and honored to receive the recognition. She did not immediately open her award letter, thinking it was about retirement--something she says she is definitely not ready to do.
In addition to her work in Career Services, McCoy has served on a number of committees such as the Professional Development Committee in the Division of Student Affairs and the Classified Staff Association. She has also served as coordinator for the Combined Virginia Campaign. In May 1994, McCoy was presented the Heroine Award from the vice president of student affairs.
