- OBIT AKERS, ARTHUR K., JR., (``PETE"") 79, OF CHAPEL HILL, N.C., FORMERLY OF FLOYD, DIED MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1996. ARRANGEMENTS BY WOOD FUNERAL HOME, FLOYD. BOOKER, WILLIAM C., 41, OF MARION, DIED MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1996. GRAVESIDE SERVICE 2:30 P.M. THURSDAY AT THE STATE CEMETERY. ARRANGEMENTS BY BARNETT'S FUNERAL HOME. BROWN, JOSEPH C., OF ROANOKE, PASSED AWAY TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 1996, IN THE VA MEDICAL CENTER, SALEM. HE WAS A 1939 GRADUATE FROM VPI. MR. BROWN WAS A RETIRED LIEUTENANT COLONEL FROM THE U.S. ARMY RESERVE, HAVING SERVED IN THE EUROPEAN THEATRE DURING WORLD WAR II. HE SERVED FOR A TOTAL OF 28 YEARS IN BOTH HIS ACTIVE AND RESERVE DUTIES, AND WAS A RECIPIENT OF THE BRONZE STAR. IN1994, THE VIRGINIA DIVISION, UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY, BESTOWED ON HIM THE WORLD WAR II CROSS OF MILITARY SERVICE. THIS AWARD IS GIVEN TO LINEAL DESCENDANTS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS WHO HAVE HONORABLE SERVED THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DURING TIME OF WAR. HE WORKED IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS FOR THEROANOKE CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, FROM 1956 UNTILHIS RETIREMENT IN 1983, FROM WHICH HE RETIRED AS ENVIRONMENTAL SUPERVISOR. MR.B ROWN WAS A MEMBER OF THE RETIRED OFFICER ASSOCIATION AND THE ROANOKE CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE. UNTIL HIS ILLNESS, HE ATTENDED FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH WITH HIS WIFE. JOE BROWN WAS AN OUTSTANDING CITIZEN WHO, WITH HIS WIFE, QUIETLY GAVE THEIR RESOURCES TO BETTER THE LOT OF THOSE LESS FORTUNATE. MANY CITIZENS AND BENEVOLENT ORGANIZATIONS ARE FORTUNATE THAT HE PASSED THEIR WAY. SURVIVING AREHIS WIFE, MARGARET R. BROWN; A BROTHER AND SISTER-IN-LAW, THOMAS W. AND HELEN MORRIS OF HAMPTON; SISTER-IN-LAW AND BROTHER-IN-LAW, EDITH AND BOB GARST OF ROANOKE; ONE NIECE; SIX NEPHEWS; AND A NUMBER OF COUSINS INCLUDING A SPECIAL COUSIN, LOUISE BRADLEY OF FRIENDSHIP MANOR. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE CONDUCTEDAT 11:30 A.M. FRIDAY FROM OAKEY'S NORTH CHAPEL WITH CHAPLAIN GUY A. RITTER JR.OFFICIATING. INTERMENT WITH MILITARY HONORS WILL FOLLOW AT FAIR VIEW CEMETERY.
