BLUSHING ANGEL: 'Dainty Rose' x probably 'Ho-O' ('Apple Blossom'). Open pollinated seed collected (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Dr. Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Buds white with pink tips. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1¼" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose), evenly rounded lobes, very slightly fragrant, white, with moderate pink 2.5 R 8/5 (Nickerson), ⅛-¼" tips to corolla and calyx lobes. Calyx and corolla whorls are the same length. Flower cluster 3-flowered, about 2½" x 2½". Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 2.5 cm. x 1.3 cm., elliptic to narrowly obovate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, top more hairy than under surface, moderate yellow green 5GY 5/6 to moderate olive green 5GY 4/3, some older leaves turn vivid yellow 2.5Y 8/12 in fall. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately 24" tall x 26" wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid-to-late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
CEYLON: R. catawbiense var. album x R. fortunei . Cross (before 1950) by Joseph B. Gable. Raised and introduced (1973) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1¾" long, with 5-6 wavy lobes, Purple Group 75D (Rose Purple), with 2 dorsal, Yellow Green Group 154D rays in throat. Calyx minute, green. Truss 5⅜" across x 6⅛" high, flat, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5" x 2½", elliptic, obtuse, rounded (slightly auriculate), flat, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 138A, under surface with very light indumentum (hairs buff, scattered, not very visible without lens). Winter buds reddish. Plant rounded, branching well, 10' x 10' in 33 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -25°F.
CHINMAR: 'China' x 'Margaret Findlay'. Cross (c. 1960) by Karl Sifferman, Seattle, WA. Raised and named by Sifferman and Nelson. Introduced (c. 1960) by Ben Nelson, Suquamish, WA. Described and registered by Don McClure, Seattle, WA. Flowers openly campanulate, 3" across x 1¾" long, with 6 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 3D, with small red rays and spotting in dorsal throat. Calyx negligible. Truss 6" across x 5" high, flat, with 13 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, olive green, with maroon petiole. Plant rounded, branching well, 6' tall x 4' wide in 15 years. Blooms in late April, early May. Hardy to at least 2°F.
CRETE: R. smirnowii x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1962) by Ben Lancaster. Raised and introduced (1976) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Red Purple Group 64C (Magenta Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Red Purple Group 73D (Mallow Purple) soon aging to white, with a few dorsal, ochre spots. Calyx minute, ivory. Truss 6" across x 4½" high, dome-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 4 years, 4½" x 1⅞", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, convex, revolute, partly hairy, glossy, Green Group 139A, under surface with heavy, tan indumentum. New growth with grey to tan tomentum. Plant broad, branching well, 5' tall x 8' wide in 20 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -12°F.
FIJI: 'Russell Harmon' (a natural hybrid of R. catawbiense and R. maximum ; registration is in process) x 'Goldsworth Orange'. Cross (1950), raised, and introduced (1976) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds dark red and yellow. Flowers of good substance, campanulate, 1¾" across x 2" long, with 5 slightly wavy lobes, Red Group 50B (Claret Rose), with dorsal. Greyed Orange Group 165A spotting, and ¼" Yellow Orange Group 20D rays in throat. Calyx ⅜" green, reddish at base. Truss 6" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, with 13 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 4½" x 1¾-1⅞", narrower than elliptic, cuneate, flat, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 148A, under surface with light, patchy, orange indumentum. Winter buds dark red and yellow with awns. Plant broad, branching moderately, 4' tall x 6½' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-June. Hardy to at least -20°F.
FRANGO: R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x 'Noyo Chief'. Cross (1963), raised, and introduced by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Group 52B (Carmine). Flowers of good substance, openly campanulate, 2" x 2", with 5 wavy lobes, slightly fragrant, Red Group 50D (Empire Rose), with Orange Group 25B spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx minute, light green. Truss 5½" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 14-18 flowers. Very free flowering. Leaves held 4 years, 6" x 2¼", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute, cuneate, revolute, coriaceous, somewhat glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A to 147A, with medium, plastered, Orange White Group 159A (beige) indumentum. New growth with greyed white tomentum. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 9' tall x 6' wide in 17 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
GOLDEN BEE: R. keiskei 'Yaku Fairy’ x R. melinanthum (Syn.: R. semilunatum ). Cross (1971), raised, and introduced by Warren E. Berg, Port Ludlow, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1⅜" across x ⅞" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 8A, throat 9B, no markings. Calyx ⅛", Orange Red Group 30D with green lobes. Truss 3" across x 2" high, open and lax, with 5-6 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 2" x ⅝", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat with undulate margin, glabrous, new leaves glossy, old dull, Green Group 138A, under surface with tiny, closely spaced, difficult to see, light green scales. New Growth Yellow Green Group 144A, reddish-green shading at margins. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, with stiff branches, 2' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms mid- to late April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
GOVERNORS MANSION: Parentage unknown. Possibly a Dexter or Ben P. P. Mosley seedling (1958-9). Probably raised at Biltmore Estate, Biltmore, NC. Plant "found" and named by Howard Rogers, Asheville, NC, who for years has propagated "local Dexters". Grows in front of Western Governor's Mansion, Sunset Mt., Asheville, NC, which was landscaped by William R. Garren, who at that time was Director of Horticulture at Biltmore. Mr. Garren used Biltmore rhododendrons in this landscaping and has said that the Estate received Dexter rhododendrons, both seedlings and rooted cuttings from various sources. As 'Governor's Mansion' is so distinct from all other rhododendrons of the Asheville area, The Dexter Study Group of the Southeastern Chapter, ARS, has described and registered it. It was distributed in 1978. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2¼" long, with 5-6 frilled lobes. Purple Group 78A (Imperial Purple) with prominent, Greyed Orange Group 163A, 1¾" x 1" blotch and peripheral spotting in dorsal lobe sector and in throat at either side of upper lobe. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 5" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, with 11-15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 5½-6½" x 2-2½", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat, glabrous, glossy, dark yellow green. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately with arching branches, 9' tall x 8' wide in 12-15 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15°F.
HUDSON BAY: R. carolinianum var. album x R. dauricum var. album . Cross (1968), raised, and introduced (1979) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Buds Red Purple Group 65C. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x ¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes, white. Calyx minute, greenish-yellow. Terminal flower cluster dome-shaped, about 2¾" across x 1¼" tall, from 3-4 trusses, each 3-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 1¾" x ¾", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, near Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface rusty with almost contiguous, medium size, brown scales. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 4' tall x 5½' wide in 13 years. Blooms at the end of April. Hardy to at least-20°F.
KING BEE: R. yakushimanum x R. tsariense . Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Warren E. Berg, Port Ludlow, WA. Buds Red Group 52B. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, opens Red Group 49D (fades to white), 43B spotting on dorsal lobe and 43D stripes down centers of each lobe from throat to margin. Calyx negligible, Orange Group 29D. Truss 5" across x 3" high, dome-shaped, open and lax, with 7-10 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 2¼" x ¾", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute, cuneate, convex, grossly glabrous except sometimes with slight tomentum remaining from tomentose new growth, slightly bullate, glossy, under surface with heavy, felt-like, Greyed Orange Group 167A indumentum. Plant upright, semi-dwarf, branching moderately, 3' tall x 2' wide in 12 years. Blooms mid- to late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
MARKEETA: A selection of R. adenopodum from open pollinated seed from the University of Washington Arboretum, Seattle, WA. Raised (1964) and introduced (1976) by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Purple Group 57D. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 56C, fading to almost white with age, with dorsal tan spotting. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 6" x 6", conical or sometimes flat, with 16-18 flowers. Leaves held 3-4 years, 7" x 1½", very narrowly oblanceolate, acute, narrowly cuneate, concave (boat-shaped), dull, near Yellow Green Group 147Á, with medium, Greyed Orange Group 164D (fawn) indumentum. New growth with greyed white tomentum. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 6' tall x 5' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
MARZO: 'Ruby Bowman' x R. ririei . Cross (1966), raised, and introduced by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Purple Group 66A (Magenta). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 63B (Spiraea Red) (fades to 68C (Roseine Purple) with age), ⅝" Purple Group 77A (Violet Purple) blotch deep in throat, reverse with 78A rays down center of each lobe from base. Calyx ⅛-¼", Red Purple Group 66C. Truss 9" across x 6" high, dome-shaped, with 10-14 flowers. Floriferous Leaves held 2-3 years, 7" x 2", narrowly elliptic to somewhat oblanceolate, acute, cuneate, concave, glabrous, between Green Group 139A and Yellow Green Group 147A, very light, patchy, plastered, white indumentum visible only with lens. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 8' x 8' in 15 years. Blooms in early March. Hardy to at least 5°F.
NEAT-O: R. campanulatum x R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'. Cross (1964), raised and introduced (1979) by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, campanulate, 1¼" x 1¼", with 5 wavy lobes, ¼-½" 55C edging (giving picotee effect), shading through 55D to almost white in throat, dorsal lobe with 55A spotting. Calyx minute, yellow green. Truss 4" x 4", ball-shaped, with 20-25 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3-4 years, 5" x 2", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, some with undulate margins, glabrous when mature, dull, somewhat glaucous, Yellow Green Group near 147A, under surface with heavy, Greyed Orange Group 175B-D indumentum. New growth with greyed white tomentum. Plant rounded, branching well, 2' x 2' in 7 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 5°F. Indumentum is a vivid and striking color.
PEACH PARFAIT: R. catawbiense var. album x [ R. dichroanthum x ( R. griffithianum x R. auriculatum )]. Cross (1952), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Pictured in American Horticulturist , 52:4, 1973, p. 18. Buds Red Purple Group 68B (Roseine Purple). Flowers open-funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2⅛" long, with 5 wavy lobes, 68C, with Yellow Group 4D (Primrose Yellow) center of lobe stripes and Yellow Orange Group 16A dorsal spotting, 68C soon ages to Red Purple Group 65D. Calyx minute, green. Truss 7" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, with 13-15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 3½-4½" x 1½-2", elliptic, broadly acute, cuneate to rounded, may be flat, convex, or concave, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant broad, branching moderately, 4' tall x 4½' wide in 9 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -20°F.

Buds Red Purple Group 73A. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 69A, with bold dorsal spotting, Yellow Green Group 153D. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Truss 6¾" across x 5½" high, conical, with 20 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2-3 years, 5¾" x 2¼", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, glabrous, dull, Green Group 139A. Plant conical, branching well, 6' x 6' in 29 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
PINK LIGHTS: A deciduous azalea. Kosterianum x R. prinophyllum . Cross (1957), raised, and introduced by Dr. Harold Pellett, U. of Minnesota, Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, MN. Described by Laurie Mainquist. Flowers open-funnel-campanulate, 5 cm. across x 4 cm. long with 5 evenly rounded (dorsal, wavy) lobes, very fragrant, Red Group 54D (Spinel Red), with dorsal Orange Red Group 30C spotting. Calyx 0.2 cm., Green Group 139C. Truss 10 cm. across x 6 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 9-10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 6.4 cm. x 2.5 cm., oblanceolate to elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, bullate, Green Group 138C, both surfaces hairy. Plant broad, branching well, 6' tall x 5' wide in 24 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -40-45°F.
PINK SHERBET: R. yakushimanum (Exbury form) x unknown. Cross (1969) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1979) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Synonym: Pink Ice. Buds Red Purple Group 63B (Spiraea Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, 63D (Spiraea Red), throat slightly lighter, with ¼", 63C edging, reverse 63C. Corolla fades to near white with age. Calyx negligible. Truss 5" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, with 8-12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 2", between elliptic and narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, convex, glossy, grossly glabrous when mature, between Yellow Green Groups 146A and 147A, under surface with heavy, Greyed Orange Group 165C-D (Yellow Ochre) indumentum. New growth with silvery tomentum. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 2' x 2' in 7 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
ROSY LIGHTS: A deciduous azalea. R. prinophyllum x Kosterianum. Cross (1957), raised, and introduced by Dr. Harold Pellett, U. of Minnesota, Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, MN. Described by Laurie Mainquist. Flowers open-funnel-campanulate, 6 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded (dorsal lobe wavy) margins, Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose), with Orange Red Group 33B spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx 0.2 cm., light green. Truss 12 cm. across x 6 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 8 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 7 cm. x 2.7 cm. oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, bullate, Green Group 138A, both surfaces hairy, Greyed Purple Group 187B at best in autumn (generally mottled). Plant broad, branching well, 6' tall x 4' wide in 24 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -40-45°F.
SALMON MOUND, 'Dainty Rose' x probably 'Salmon Beauty'. Open pollinated seed collected (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Dr. Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1" x 1", with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) evenly rounded lobes, deep pink 2.5R 6/11 to deep yellowish pink 5R 6/11 (Nickerson), with narrow white streaks on back of sepals. Corolla and calyx whorls are the same length and color. Flower cluster 2- or 3-flowered, about 2" x 2". Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 2 cm. x 1 cm., elliptic to narrowly obovate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, top more hairy than under surface, moderate olive green 5GY 4/3. Plant semi-dwarf, branching well, 13" tall x 25" wide in 6 years. Blooms mid- to late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
SALMON SUNRISE: 'Dainty Rose' x probably 'Salmon Beauty'. Open pollinated seed collected (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Dr. Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¼" x 1¼", with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) evenly rounded lobes, deep pink 2.5R 6/11 to deep yellowish pink 5R 6/11 (Nickerson), with dorsal lobe spotting strong red 2.5R 5/12. Corolla and calyx whorls are the same length and color. Flower clusters 3-flowered, about 2½" x x 2½". Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 3 cm. x 1.5 cm., elliptic to narrowly obovate, mucronate, cuneate, flat, ciliate, top more hairy than under surface, moderate olive green 5GY 4/3. Some older leaves turn vivid yellow 2.5Y 8/12 in fall. Plant rounded, branching well, 18" tall x 27" wide in 6 years. Blooms mid- to late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
SENORA MELDON: R. augustinii 'Lackamas Blue' x 'Blue Diamond'. Cross (1963), raised, and introduced (1975) by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Violet Group 87A. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, faintly fragrant, Violet Blue Group 90A, ½-¾" edging shading to 91B in throat, with a few green brown spots on dorsal lobes. Calyx ⅛", green. Stamens and pistil conspicuously exserted. Terminal floral cluster 3-5" across x 2-3" high, composed of 3-5 trusses, each 2-to 5-flowered. Very floriferous. Leaves held 2-3 years, 2½" x ¾", narrowly elliptic, narrowly acute with long apiculus, cuneate, flat, some convex, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with tiny, widely spaced, golden brown scales. Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 5' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 5°F.
VIVID-O: R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' x R. arboreum (red selection from cool house, Crystal Springs Garden, Portland, OR.) Cross (1967), raised, and introduced (1980) by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Group 53C (Cardinal Red). Flowers openly campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 52A to C (Crimson to Carmine Rose), dorsal lobe sector lighter, dorsal lobe spotting and veins on lobes 53C. Calyx minute. Truss 6" across x 4" tall, dome-shaped, with 18-20 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4¼-6" x 1¼-2", narrowly elliptic, acute to slightly apiculate (tip hard), cuneate, convex, glabrous, dull. Yellow Green Group 147A, midvein and primary veins somewhat indented, with greyed white, medium indumentum. New growth white tomentose. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 4' tall x 5' wide in 12 years. Blooms late March. Hardy to at least 5°F. WHITE LIGHTS: A deciduous azalea. Parents unknown. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Dr. Harold Pellett, U. of Minnesota, Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, MN. Described by Laurie Mainquist. Buds Red Group 55C (Nevron Rose) at base. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 1.8 cm. across x 1.6 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Yellow Orange Group 19A, no markings, outside of tube 55C. Calyx 0.2 cm., Green Group 138C. Truss 8 cm. across x 5 cm. high, dome-shaped, with 5 flowers. Leaves 6 cm. x 2.5 cm., oblanceolate to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat, Green Group 138B, both surfaces hairy. Plant rounded, branching well, 4' tall x 3½' wide in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -40-45°F. [ Correct corolla color to: Red Group 56C fading to nearly White Group 155D, with Yellow Orange Group 19A dorsal spotting. - mod. 3/8/12, ref. ]
YUKON: R. carolinianum var. album x R. dauricum var. album . Cross (1968), raised, and introduced (1978) by Dr. David G. Leach, North Madison, OH. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1⅝" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, white, lobe edges faintly flushed Red Purple Group 65D, aging to white. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Terminal flower cluster dome-shaped, about 3½" across x 1½" high, usually from several trusses, each 3- flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1¾" x ⅞", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, near Yellow Green Group 146A, under surface with closely spaced medium size, tan scales. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 6' x 6' in 13 years. Blooms at the end of April. Hardy to at least -20°F.
