The Chinquapin Hill hybrids are a group of large-flowered deciduous azaleas that we have developed by crossing two Exbury hybrids with the species
Rhododendron austrinum
from Southeast Mississippi. The object of the cross was to breed heat tolerance into large-flowered deciduous azaleas.
Over the last ten years plants resulting from these crosses have been grown, done well, and bloomed in gardens in South Louisiana, South Mississippi, Alabama, and in the Jacksonville, Florida area. They are also doing very well in New Providence, New Jersey, where last winter they survived and bloomed in spite of a water shortage and -10°F.
The color range is from lemon yellow R.H.S.12A through orange 25A to almost red 32A, also a white with a pink 55D blush and a yellow 8A blotch. The trusses are large and flowers 1½ to 2¾" wide.
