The following list contains names of North American hybrids registered during the period August 1 through November 4, 1986.
'APRICOT FANTASY': Elepidote. 'Hotei' x 'Tropicana' (unregistered). Cross (1971) by E.C. Brockenbrough, M.D., Bellevue, WA; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Jeanine P. Smith, Woodinville, WA. Named Best New Hybrid, Seattle Rhododendron Society (1983) and Northwest Hybridizer Group (1985). Flowers fragrant, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, 16-17 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Strong yellowish pink (40D) buds open to light yellowish pink (29C) flowers with light orange yellow (22D) throat, and moderate yellowish pink (33D) edging, c ¼" wide. Throat and upper three lobes are spotted with vivid red (45A); reverse is moderate yellowish pink (33D). Calyx 1¾" to 2", light yellowish pink (29C) with vivid red (45A) spotting. Ball-shaped truss, 6½" to 7" across x 6½" high. Leaves held 2 years, 5" to 6" x 2" to 2½", narrowly obovate, convex, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, moderate olive green (137A). Plant upright, moderately-branched, 6' high x 5' wide in 12 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant hardy to at least 0°F.
'AVIVA ANN': Elepidote. R. yakushimanum x 'Mars'. Cross and raised by unknown; named, introduced, and registered by Richard Brooks, Concord, MA. Received blue ribbon, MA Chapter show (1985). Flowers widely funnel-shaped, heavy substance, 3" across x 1½" long, 15-19 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep purplish pink (55A) buds open to pale purplish pink (56C) flowers shading to strong purplish pink (55B) at edges; reverse also strong purplish pink (55B). Calyx is minute, Ball-shaped truss, 6½" across x 5½" high. Leaves held 4-5 years, 3½" to 5¼" x 1½" to 2¼", elliptic, convex, acute, rounded, smooth, with thin felt-like hairy indumentum, moderate yellow green (146D), easily rubbed off. Plant low, spreading, dense habit, 4½' high x 7½' wide in 17 years (from cutting?). Blooms late May. Hardy to at least -17°F. (Above colors refer to 1986 RHS Colour Chart)
'CHARLES PHILLIPS': Lepidote. Unknown x 'Fragrantissimum'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by Charles O. Phillips, Oakland, CA; named, and registered by Elma E. Connelly, Oakland, CA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, moderately fragrant, c 2" across x c 2" long, white with pale green throat, 5-lobed with evenly rounded margins. Terminal floral cluster 4" to 5½" across x 3½ high, composed of 2-3 flat trusses, each having 3 to 5 flowers. Calyx ¼", very pale green. Leaves 1¾" x ⅞", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate; upper surface smooth and glossy; under surface covered with light indumentum consisting of grayish green hairs and brown scales; edges are hairy. Plant upright, open, well-branched, 12' high x 6' wide in 11 years from cutting. Blooms mid-March. Hardy to at least 25°F.
'DAVE GOHEEN': Elepidote. R. yakushimanum x R. calophytum . Cross (1964) and raised by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA; named, introduced, and registered by Dr. Lansing W. Bulgin (Ellanhurst Gardens), Sherwood, OR. Flowers tubular campanulate, 2¼" across x 1⅝" long, 14-16 per truss, 5-lobed, evenly rounded margins. Strong purplish pink (55B) buds open to pale purplish pink (55D) flowers with yellowish white (155B) edging of variable width, prominent strong red (53B) blotch at base of dorsal lobe, and pale purplish pink rays (56C) at midsection of each lobe; reverse is pale purplish pink (55D). Flowers fade to white. No calyx. Dome-shaped truss, 5½" across × 4½" high. Leaves held 3 years, 4½" x 1⅛", narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, revolute, acute to apiculate, cuneate, smooth, dull, moderate yellow green (137C); hairy indumentum, pale yellow green (157A) on new growth, pale yellow (162D) on mature leaves. Plant broad, well-branched, 3' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms early April. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'DOCTOR ELTON TRUEBLOOD': Elepidote. 'Tom Everett' x 'Joe Brooks' (unregistered Yelton hybrid). Cross (1970) by Dr. Ernest Yelton, Rutherfordton, NC (ARS Seed Exchange seed lot 1971-654); raised, named, introduced, and registered by Jim Todd, Lenoir, NC. Received blue ribbon (1981), Best Unnamed Seedling; ARS Seed Exchange trophy (1986); both at Southeastern Chapter shows. Flowers fragrant, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2¼" long, as many as 12 per truss, up to 7 lobes, wavy margins. Pale purplish pink (56D) fading to cream white; reverse pale purplish pink (56A); 6 to 7 pale to moderate yellow (161) rays in throat. Calyx minute, green. Ball-shaped, slightly lax truss, 6" across x 4½" high. Leaves held 2 years, 5" x 2", elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, moderate olive green (137B-146A). Plant broad, well-branched, 4½' high x 4' wide in 14 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant hardy to at least 0°F.
'EMPEROR WALTZ': Elepidote. 'Robert Allison' x R. fortunei 'Mrs. C. Butler'. Cross by Edmund E. Walbrecht (ARS seed lot 1973-516), Dover, NJ (now New Harbor, ME); raised, named, introduced, and registered by Richard Brooks, Concord, MA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, moderately fragrant, heavy substance, 4" across x 2¼" long, 7-8 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish pink (73B) buds open to very pale purple (73D) flowers shading to light purplish pink (73C) at margins, and having two very small, strong yellow green (144C) dorsal rays; reverse is light purplish pink (73C). Calyx ⅛", strong yellow green (144C). Flat truss, 7" across x 6" high. Leaves held 2 years, 4" to 7¼" x 1¼" to 2¼", oblong to obovate, concave, acute, rounded, smooth. 'GERALDINE LEVON': Deciduous azalea. Parentage unknown; seedling purchased from Girard Nurseries. Cross (c 1960) by Peter Girard, Sr., Geneva, OH; raised, named, and registered by Robert K. Peters, Bendersville, PA; introduced by Ray Carter (Bull Valley Nursery), Aspers, PA. Flowers moderately fragrant, heavy substance, flat saucer-shaped, 3" across x 1¼" long, 6-11 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Yellow (7.5Y 8/12) buds open to lighter yellow (7.5Y 9/8) flowers which fade to white. There is a persistent, prominent yellow (2.5Y 8/12) blotch in dorsal lobe. Calyx 3/16", 2.5CY 6/8. Ball-shaped truss, 3¼" across x 3¼" high. Leaves 3" x 1⅜", obovate, convex, apiculate, cuneate, upper surface hairy. Plant upright, open growth habit, 5' high x 3' wide in c 25 years from seed. 'HOLLY'S LATE PINK': Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Pink Gumpo'. Synonym: 'Holly Hills Late Pink'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, semi-double, 2½" across x 1½" long, 9-10 petals with wavy/frilled margins. Strong purplish pink (55B). Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering Leaves held 1 year, 1¼" x ¾", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green. Plant dwarf, rounded, well-branched, 10" high x 18" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -15°F.
'HOOSIER CHARM': Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy-edged lobes. Deep purplish pink (55A) with dark red spotting upper lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1½" x ¾", elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, dark green, hairy. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 18" high x 15" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.
'HOOSIER PEACH': Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong pink (49A) with dark red spotting upper lobe. Calyx ⅛", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1-7/16" x ⅜", oblanceolate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, dull, dark green, hairy. 'KANCHENJUNGA': Elepidote. ( R. catawbiense 'Catalgla' x R. fortunei ) x R. decorum , McLaren form. Cross by George W. Ring, Vienna, VA (ARS seed lot 1973-343); raised, named, introduced, and registered by Richard Brooks, Concord, MA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, moderately fragrant, heavy substance, 3½" across x 2" long, 11-13 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Buds, paler than light yellow green (145D), open to white flowers having two small, strong yellow green (145A), dorsal rays. Calyx 1/16", grayish red (178A). Flat truss, 8" across x 6" high. Leaves held 2 years, 3½" to 5¼" x 1½" to 2½", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cordate to rounded, smooth. Plant tall, upright, dense habit, 7' high x 8' wide in 13 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. 'KELLY MOSLEY': Deciduous azalea. R. austrinum 'Escatawpa' x selected Exbury hybrid. Cross (1976), raised, named, and registered by Charles J. Hiers, Auburn, AL. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, 12-18 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy to frilled margins, strong fruity fragrance. Vivid yellow (14A) flowers, with throat blending to vivid orange (28B), and uneven margins (c ¼ wide) of strong orange (24A); vivid orange yellow (21A) blotch covers dorsal lobe. Calyx ½", light yellow green (145B). Tight ball-shaped truss, 6½" across x 6½" high. Leaves 3¾" x 1⅝", elliptic, flat, slightly wavy margins, apiculate, cuneate, dull, dark yellowish green (139A), both surfaces hairy. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 6' high x 4' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms early April. Plant hardy to at least 0°F.
'LETTIE': Elepidote. [( R. catawbiense x R. haematodes ) x 'Mars'] x 'Ralph Pape'. Cross (1977), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Maletta Yates, Frostburg, MD. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, 10-13 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish red (63B) edging, c ⅜" wide, shading rapidly to white throat; two small vivid yellow green (154A) rays and minor spotting in throat. Buds and reverse strong purplish red (63B). Calyx minute, strong yellow green (141D). Conical truss, 4½" across x 5" high. Leaves held 2 years, 5" x 2", elliptic, flat, mucronate, rounded, smooth, glossy, moderate olive green (147A); slight, light tan hairy indumentum. Plant upright, well-branched, 45" high x 47" wide in 9 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant hardy to at least -20°F.
'MARGARET HYATT': Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Robin Hill Frosty'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, semi-double, hose-in-hose, 2¾" across x 1½" long, 12 petals with wavy/frilled edges. Strong purplish pink (73B) with rose/red spotting upper lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1" x ⅜", oblanceolate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, dull, dark green, hairy. Plant broad, upright, well-branched, 18" high x 15" wide in 10 years from seed. 'MARTHA PESTE': Elepidote. 'Lillian Peste', selfed. Cross by Fred Peste, raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, named by Lillian Peste, described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, all Shelton, WA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, 13 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong pink (48C) buds with light yellowish pink (27B) streaks open to pale yellowish pink (27C) flowers tinged and streaked with strong pink (48D). Throat is strong red (53B) and dorsal lobe is spotted with moderate reddish orange (35A). Basic color changes to pale orange yellow (19D). Calyx 1¾, pale yellowish pink (27C) streaked with strong pink (48D); throat strong red (53B). Truss ball-shaped, 6" across x 3" high. Leaves held 2 years, 3¾" x 1¼", obovate, convex, acute, cuneate, smooth; moderate olive green (147A) with heavy indumentum, moderate yellow (161A). Plant broad, rounded, semi-dwarf, well-branched, 30" high x 32" wide in about 8 years from seed. Blooms late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'MARYANN HYATT': Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Robin Hill Frosty'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, semi-double, 2½" across x 1¾" long, 11 petals with wavy edges. Strong purplish pink (73B) with rose/brown spotting in lower portion of upper petal. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1½" x ¾", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green, hairy. Plant broad, upright, well-branched, 18" high x 15" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.
'MARY TODD': Elepidote. 'Tom Everett' x ( R. wardii x 'Fawn'). Cross (1969), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Jim Todd, Lenoir, NC. Received blue ribbon (1983), Best Unnamed Seedling, Southeastern Chapter show. Flowers very fragrant, openly funnel-shaped, 4½" to 5" across x 2¾" long, 9-12 per truss, 7-lobed, frilled margins. Pale greenish yellow (2D) buds, tipped with deep yellowish pink (41D), open to pale yellow (11D) flowers having strong yellowish pink (37B) edging, c ¼" wide. Throat is brilliant greenish yellow (5B), with c 12 light yellow green (154D) rays extending ⅝" to 1¼" from center into upper lobes. Reverse is pale greenish yellow (10D). Ball-shaped, slightly lax truss, 7" across x 7" high. Leaves held 2 years, 6" x 2¼", lanceolate, revolute, obtuse, rounded, glossy, moderate olive green (147A). Open growth habit, moderately-branched, 3' high x 4' wide in 10 years. Blooms early May. Plant hardy to at least -5°F.
'MAY WINE': Elepidote. R. sperabile x R. elliottii . Cross by William Whitney, Brinnon, WA; seedling obtained from Clarke Nurseries, Long Beach, WA (c 1974); raised, named, introduced, and registered by Dr. Lansing W. Bulgin (Ellanhurst Gardens), Sherwood, OR. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across x 1½" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong red (46A) buds open to vivid red (45C) flowers. Calyx ¼" to ½", vivid red (45C). Dome-shaped truss, 5½" across x 3" high. Leaves held 3 years, 3½" x 1¼", narrowly elliptic, slightly convex, acute, cuneate, smooth, dull, moderate yellow green (147B); light, hairy indumentum, easily rubbed off; color ages from light yellow (160B) to pale yellow (162D). Plant rounded, well-branched, 2½' high x 3' wide in 7 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
'MICHAEL GRAF': Elepidote. 'Captain Jack' x 'Leo'. Cross by Paul Holden (1970); raised by Mrs. A. J. Holden; described by Carol A. Graf; named, introduced, and registered by Paul Holden (Harstine Island Nursery), all Shelton, WA. Flowers openly campanulate, 1¾" across x 1¼" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Vivid red (45A) with strong red (46A) edging, c ¼" wide, and some spotting in dorsal lobe, so faint that color cannot be determined. Calyx ⅓" to 1", vivid red (45A). Flat truss, 4" across x 2½" high. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 1¾", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, dull, moderate olive green (147A); under surface moderate yellow green (147D) with light hairy indumentum, easily rubbed off. On young leaves, indumentum is moderate orange (167B); on mature leaves, dark reddish orange (175B). Plant upright, open, well-branched, 5' high x 3' wide in 15 years from seed. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
'MOBY DICK': Evergreen azalea. 'Mildred Mae' x 'Avalanche (Domoto). Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; named by David Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Ivory white with yellow green spotting in lower portion of dorsal lobe. Calyx ½", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 2¼" x ¾", elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, dull, dark green, hairy. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 18" high x 30" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.
'MRS. ARTHUR ROGERS': Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Chanson'. Synonym: 'Helen Rogers'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, named, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder (Holly Hills, Inc.), Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, double, 2¾" across x 1½" long, 14 petals with wavy margins. Light purplish pink (73C) with brown spotting in throat. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1¼" x ⅝", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, dull, dark green, hairy. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 18" high x 18" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least-15°F.
'MRS. BETTY OLIVER': Deciduous azalea. R. occidentale x unknown. Cross by C. Edwards, Watsonville, CA (1965); raised, named, and registered by H.W. Oliver. Menlo Park, CA; introduced by H.W. Oliver (Menlo Park) and Bay Laurel Nursery, Scottsdale, CA. Received award, CA Chapter show (1986), Best Pink Azalea Hybrid. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, 14 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins, very fragrant. Deep orange pink buds open to pastel pink flowers with deeper pink veins; prominent orange blotch in dorsal lobe; deeper pink to almost red on exterior of neck. Calyx ⅛", pale green. Ball-shaped truss, 5½" across x 4½" high. Leaves 4" x 1½", oblanceolate, acute, cuneate, glossy, bright green; autumn color red. Plant upright, well-branched, 13' high x 9' wide in 21 years from seed. Blooms mid-season (4/20-5/15 in CA). Hardy to at least 10°F.
