JARS v50n2 - In Memoriam: Alice Smith
In Memoriam: Alice Smith
Alice Smith, a 25-year member of the North Kitsap Chapter, died in her sleep Dec. 15, 1995. Born in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington, she lived in South America and California, where she taught Spanish and music, before retiring to Kingston, Wash., in 1968. She became known as a teacher and practitioner of hydroponics, bonsai, horticulture and garden design principles. Alice earned the Bronze Medal of the ARS, serving as our chapter president and study group organizer. She was an enthusiastic participant in many horticultural activities and flower shows. There were hundreds of rhodies on her property at Presidents Point near Kingston, and she registered at least three hybrids: 'Presidents Point', 'Kingston' and 'Kitsap King'. A highly intelligent woman, generous in sharing her talents, experiences and plants, Alice will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
