OLYMPIC PENINSULA CHAPTER

Dick and Kay Savold

The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the ARS has awarded very few medals to its members, but the time has indeed come for another! Who better to honor than the dynamic Savold duo who enthusiastically led our troops through rhododendron show chores for several years, along with a two-year stint of secretarying? Our appreciation of their "let's-do-it" attitude and legendary plant purchasing accomplishments is unanimous. We hereby salute them with our thanks, and wish them calm seas, many salmon, and a return to join us next autumn. Awarded June 4, 1996.

POTOMAC VALLEY CHAPTER

Jack D. Ayers

The Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society Bronze Medal is awarded to Jack D. Ayers for his many years of service to the chapter. Jack has served the chapter as president, vice president and secretary and has been publicity and flower show chairman on numerous occasions. In 1995, he served as chairman of the District 9 Regional Meeting in Fairfax, Virginia, hosting Middle Atlantic and Mason Dixon chapters. Jack is always willing to volunteer and give the chapter a helping hand either as a speaker, with the donation of seed and cuttings, or with the gift of plants. He particularly excels as a hybridizer and grower of beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas, consistently showing winning trusses at our flower shows. In appreciation for these contributions, the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is pleased to bestow this award.

RSC NIAGARA CHAPTER

Bob Dickhout

The Rhododendron Society of Canada is honoured to present its first Bronze Medal to one of its most deserving members, Bob Dickhout. Over the years as treasurer and membership secretary of the Rhododendron Society of Canada, Bob has been the stabilizing force which enables the Society to function. In addition to his official duties, Bob has cheerfully organized lectures, plant sales, and other functions; and always has been there when needed. Indeed, Bob's contribution to the Rhododendron Society of Canada has been most outstanding, and we present this award with our grateful appreciation.

SHELTON CHAPTER

Jack Duffield

The Shelton Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society gratefully presents the Bronze Medal Award to Jack Duffield in recognition of his longtime support and many contributions to our Society. He has served as president and show chairman. Jack is never too busy when the club asks for his help. As chairman of our public planting projects, he has been the most diligent worker the club has ever had. A former college professor with a Ph.D. in the field of forestry and with his vast knowledge of plants, Jack finds time to inform the community of its rich treasure of trees in the town and the surrounding area. A weekly column in our local newspaper, complete with pictures, adds to the public knowledge of its trees. The community and our club are inspired and indebted to Jack for his hard work. We also wish to honor his wife Marjory for her support and tenure as our news editor. Sept. 17, 1996.

VALLEY FORGE CHAPTER

Barbara Ludwig

The members of the Valley Forge Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society proudly present the Bronze Medal to Barbara Ludwig in recognition of many years of dedicated service to the chapter. You have served as chairperson of the Valley Forge Truss Show for the past five years, ever since Longwood Gardens has hosted this important exhibit, which is very popular with the public. You also have wisely served on the Board of Directors. You have volunteered at Jenkins Arboretum, home of a growing collection of rhododendron hybrids and species, and have helped in various capacities with the annual plant sale. Your knowledge of the genus Rhododendron has been of help to members and non-members alike, and your garden has been open and an inspiration to many. In appreciation of all your contributions to the Society, the Valley Forge Chapter is proud to present to you its highest award, the Bronze Medal, October 29, 1995.

Harold Sweetman, Ph.D.

The members of the Valley Forge Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society proudly present the Bronze Medal to Harold Sweetman, Ph.D. You and Jenkins Arboretum have become a pivotal part of our chapter's life. Ever since this fortuitous and successful association began, you have enthusiastically shared your extensive horticultural expertise with us and have been so infected by the rhododendron bug that you made a trip to China with Kenneth Cox, seeking their origins. You have also been a leading force in our chapter's successful plant sale. Always eager to share plants and knowledge, you have brought great pleasure and education to the many visitors who freely tour the arboretum, planted initially by your father, and have promoted the genus Rhododendron by expanding the gardens into an impressive rhododendron and azalea collection. There is no doubt about it, we are all very grateful to you for the many worthy contributions with which you have strengthened our chapter and furthered the genus Rhododendron . October 29, 1995.
