Spectrum Volume 17 Issue 3 - September 8, 1994
The Search Committee charged with filling the position of senior vice president and provost met on August 25 to review the application process and applicant pool, develop criteria for screening applicants, establish subcommittees, and review the suggested timeline.
This is the first of a series of meetings of the committee since the start of fall semester. Arts and Sciences Dean Robert Bates is chair of the search committee. Lauren Martinson, on special assignment to the President's Office, is providing staff support to the Search Committee.
The position was advertised in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, Black Issues in HIGHER EDUCATION , and several other publications, including Spectrum . Also, nominations of candidates were solicited from the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant College (NASULGC) and from historically black and women's colleges.
The deadline for submission of applications was August 15; however, applications will continue to be accepted until a suitable candidate has been selected. More than 100 applications were received by the August 15 deadline. The review of credentials is under way and the committee expects to be involved in short-listing and interviewing during fall semester.
Nominations from the university community may be submitted to the committee in the form of a nomination letter sent to: Senior Vice President and Provost Search Committee Office, 321 Burruss Hall, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, 24061-0167.
