Exemplary departments to be honored
Spectrum Volume 17 Issue 12 - November 10, 1994
The first three recipients of the University Exemplary Awards will be recognized during a ceremony November 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the DBHCC auditorium. The departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biochemistry and Anaerobic Microbiology were chosen to receive the 1994 awards for their undergraduate programs that effectively link research and teaching.
Gordon Davies, executive director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), will speak on the importance of undergraduate education at the ceremony. A reception will follow in Donaldson Brown's West Commonwealth Room.
The exemplary awards program was established by Virginia Tech to recognize university departments and programs that offer exemplary teaching and learning environments for students and faculty members. Three awards of $10,000 to $20,000 each will be given annually to departments and programs selected by a committee from a nomination and application process.
The exemplary awards program is part of the university's Faculty Rewards Project, which seeks to clarify the expectations of faculty and define appropriate rewards for accomplishments. The theme for the 1995 awards program will be managing faculty resources of time and talent effectively and creatively to fulfill the stated departmental or program mission. The program is administered by the Provost's Office.
