The first of three major construction projects undertaken as part of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine's Phase IV building program has been completed.
The new 8,000-square-foot $1-million Infectious Disease Unit at the Prices Fork Research Center will provide college researchers with modern, safe facilities for handling a variety of Class III pathogens, according to Stephen Boyle of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology.
The IDU contains two laboratories, both Bl-3 and Bl-2 (bio-safety level) facilities, separated by a change room from animal-holding quarters large enough to accommodate cattle and a variety of laboratory animals.
It also includes a decontamination area for disinfecting infectious material and a necropsy facility.
The IDU will provide excellent facilities to support the college's ongoing research efforts into brucellosis and other Class III pathogens, Boyle said.
