HR grand opening Saturday
By Clara B. CoxSpectrum Volume 17 Issue 30 - April 27, 1995
Gov. George Allen and U.S. Sen. John Warner will be among the speakers at the grand opening of Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center on Saturday, April 29, at the historic hotel's Wells Avenue Courtyard.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an hour-long musical celebration followed by an 11 a.m. dedication.
Joining Allen and Warner in the dedication ceremony will be Del. Chip Woodrum, Roanoke Mayor David Bowers, Virginia Tech President Paul Torgersen, Renew Roanoke Foundation President Tom Robertson, Norfolk Southern Corporation Chair David Goode, and Doubletree Hotels Corporation President Richard Kelleher.
Musical guests will include Mickey Nelson, Jack Phillips, the Monterey School Choir, and Daniel Womack. Among their presentations will be special songs written by Roanoke Valley residents to commemorate the re-opening.
A sold-out, invitation-only gala benefitting Renew Roanoke, which helped raise money to renovate the 113-year-old hotel, will be held Saturday evening. The morning events are open to the public.
The hotel, which opened April 3, was given to the Virginia Tech Foundation in 1989 by Norfolk Southern. The City of Roanoke and the Renew Roanoke Foundation worked with Tech to raise money and secure loans to renovate the structure and to build the adjoining conference center. No public money was used by the university in the $40.3-million project.
