Charles Steger, vice president for development and university relations, has appointed Michael W. Carroll to the position of associate vice president for development.

Carroll has been acting associate vice president since January and is responsible for Virginia Tech's development office operations, including all the university's various fund-raising programs.

The office raises approximately $35 million annually.

"Mike has proven himself time again, including running a successful athletic fundraiser amidst a national recession and several difficult seasons for Tech sports teams," Steger said.

Carroll has been at Virginia Tech since 1988 and had been director of capital support, and previously had been director of development for athletic programs. He was responsible for a $17-million campaign for athletic programs concluding in 1992. He was named Fund Raiser of the Year at the 1991 National Conference of Athletic Fund Raisers.

Carroll has held athletic fund-raising positions at U. California at Irvine and Centenary College in Louisiana. He holds a B.A. from N.C. State University and M.A. from Ohio University.
